Chapter 37: Promotion - The Night Watch
Chapter 37: Promotion - The Night Watch
"Knock, knock, knock!"
Old Rayn opened the door, his eyes widening in surprise.
Rayn entered his home in Glintstone Town. Aside from his sister, Mint, who was already fast asleep, Rayn's mother and Anna were also awakened by the commotion. They both stepped out of their rooms.
"Rayn, why are you back? Did something happen at the manor?" Old Rayn, feeling the cold breeze from the open door, became more alert. Seeing his son's expression, he guessed that something must have occurred.
Rayn thought for a moment and decided to tell his parents directly about the incident, as he believed it would soon become common knowledge.
Additionally, if that ferocious werewolf continued hunting humans around Glintstone Town, farmers like his father, who worked on the outskirts, would be among the most vulnerable groups.
"Father, one of the servant's dormitories at the manor was attacked by a werewolf. Two people were killed on the spot, and one was abducted."
"What?"
"Hiss!" Old Rayn couldn't help but gasp.
He was familiar with werewolves, having seen one from a distance in his youth. These fierce humanoid creatures usually lived deep in the forest. How did they end up here?
"But don't worry too much. Sir Lloyd and Sir Percival are already handling the situation at the manor. The town has also been notified, so I believe this matter will be resolved soon."
To reassure his family, Rayn didn't mention that the werewolf was over two meters tall and had strength comparable to a full knight.
If he told them the truth, it would only cause unnecessary worry.
"Mother, tomorrow, you must not go to the woods to collect firewood or anything else. If you stay in town, there shouldn't be any problems."
After some thought, Rayn turned to his father and added, "Father, it's best if you don't go to the farm tomorrow, either."
"Alright! I'll listen to you." Old Rayn nodded.
Ever since Rayn told them about Sheriff Hamilton's invitation to join the Night Watch, Old Rayn had considered Rayn to have grown up.
He was no longer a child who needed their care but a young man capable of shouldering responsibilities.
So, Rayn's words carried more weight! Rayn nodded and headed upstairs with Anna.
Now that Rayn was back, Anna would have to share a room with Mint, while Rayn slept in his own room as usual.
But just as Rayn had lain down for a short while, there was another knock on the door.
When the vigilant Old Rayn peered through the door crack and saw three Night Watchmen standing outside, each holding a torch and clad in black leather armor, he immediately opened the door.
Rayn also came down from the second floor.
The leader, a familiar and capable Night Watchman, said, "Rayn, we're short-staffed tonight. Sheriff Hamilton just sent word for you to join the night patrol in this area."
"Sure, give me two minutes." Rayn agreed without hesitation.
He knew this Night Watchman, whose patrol area included Rayn's home.
If it had been somewhere else, Rayn might have hesitated.
But when it came to patrolling his own doorstep, he would always agree for the sake of his family's safety.
Rayn turned and went upstairs to retrieve a short sword from the storage room on the second floor.
"Are you getting your gear? Don't bother; we've got everything ready for you." The Night Watchman behind the leader handed Rayn a full set of black leather armor, a bow, a quiver, and a hand-and-a-half sword.
Rayn's heart leaped with joy, never expecting the other party to be so considerate.
When Rayn donned the standard Night Watchman's uniform, aside from his slightly youthful face and shorter stature, he looked almost indistinguishable from the other Night Watchmen.
"Rayn, be careful," his mother instructed with a worried expression.
Initially, she thought Rayn joining the Night Watch was a good thing, but now, seeing that he had to personally deal with the crisis, her brows furrowed with unshakable concern for her child.
"Don't worry, Mother. I'll take care of myself," Rayn assured her.
After bidding farewell to his parents, Rayn set out on night patrol with three Night Watchmen.
"Rayn, I heard that the incident involved the servants undergoing training at the manor?" asked the capable Night Watchman.
"Yes! I personally witnessed that ferocious Werewolf burst out of the servant's dormitory with extreme ferocity. It instantly knocked down the guards and escaped," Rayn replied with a solemn expression.
Recalling the other party's strength and agility far beyond normal, he still felt a lingering sense of dread.
If converted using the system's quantification standards, this strength level was likely around 18 or 20 points! It far exceeded the limits of what ordinary people could achieve.
The other three Night Watchmen exchanged glances at Rayn's solemn expression and turned serious.
In their eyes, this young man, who had single-handedly taken down two thugs and earned Sir Hamilton's praise, was not only young but also possessed considerable strength and a meticulous mind.
If even he took it so seriously, it meant the werewolf's strength was truly formidable and not to be underestimated! No wonder Sir Hamilton emphasized that any Night Watchman who spotted the werewolf's trail must immediately signal for backup.
Within half a minute, other Night Watchman squads would continuously arrive from anywhere within Glintstone Town.
Sir Hamilton would also rush over immediately!
During the conversation, Rayn quickly learned their mission: to patrol and ensure the safety of these two streets.
"Let's light these street lamps first," the capable Night Watchman squad leader said.
Usually, under normal circumstances, not all the street lamps (oil lamps) in the town were lit. Some were extinguished to conserve fuel.
Rayn had just learned that the street lamps in the town used a mixture with whale oil as the main ingredient.
Lighting a single lamp was not expensive, but lighting dozens or even hundreds would be costly.
Seeing the Night Watchmen lighting the lamps, Rayn offered to help: "Let me try."
As a new Night Watchman-to-be, it was evident that being diligent was always a good thing.
He could quickly get along with the elders.
Just as Rayn was about to light the oil lamp with a match, a sudden notification rang out:
[Ding! Host detected refueling street lamps, triggering the promotion - Night Watchman!]
[Promotion to Night Watchman requires: 1. Militia level 3 or higher; 2. Strength 7 points or higher, Agility 6 points or higher, Constitution 6 points or higher; 3. Any sword technique level 3 or higher, any archery level 2 or higher! Current conditions not met, promotion to Night Watchman failed!]
Huh! It's a new combat profession!
