Chapter 367: What Exactly is Wulang?
Chapter 367: What Exactly is Wulang?
Kuro narrowed his eyes, surveying the gruesome scene before him. After a long silence, he asked, "Hey, witch, are these frenzied beasts capable of doing such things?"
"I don't know either. This is my first time witnessing this", Fen Ni replied, her face pale as she suppressed her nausea. "Spirit beasts have no interest in meat. They're usually gentle creatures who wouldn't attack people. They've even been known to help the hungry by offering fruits. Why is this happening?!"
Those spirit beasts were devouring humans!
"Can you smell the Lion Ape? Where is it now?" Kuro asked.
Klah pointed in a specific direction. "Over there."
Kuro's eyes flashed crimson as he clenched his teeth. "Quite a lot of Aura, huh? I'll see what exactly it's trying to accomplish!"
According to his perception, there was an abundance of life Aura coming from that direction. It was likely a town.
A Lion Ape was attacking a town?
Boom!
Kuro's body lifted into the air, unleashing a wisp-like shockwave that distorted the atmosphere. At an incomprehensible speed, he shot forward, his impact force roaring like howling wind that bent trees and grass in its wake.
Soon, the outline of a town emerged in the distance.
Around the town's perimeter, a group of people had piled debris into a makeshift barricade. Outside this barrier lay several corpses. Further back, a pack of beasts growled menacingly at those behind the barricade.
Among the beasts were cows, horses, and wolves, all with bloodshot eyes and restless hooves, appearing extremely agitated.
Inside the barricade, civilians wielded pitchforks and wooden clubs. Some held torches while others gripped primitive firearms, their expressions grim.
Roar!
A wolf took a step forward.
"Don't come any closer!"
An elderly man brandished his torch, forcing the wolf to retreat a step, clearly fearing the flames.
"You damned beasts!"
A burly man holding a firearm stared at the fallen corpses outside, his breath growing ragged. Suddenly leaping over the barricade, he fired his weapon at a beast. "I'll kill you all! For my brother!"
"Don't go out there!"
The elderly man instinctively shouted, but it was too late. The gunshot echoed, and the lead bullet's accuracy proved abysmal, striking only the wolf's foot. However, the next moment, a piercing cry split the sky.
Kreeeaaarrr!
A massive eagle descended like a falling meteor, its iron-like talons piercing the burly man's skull and creating ghastly wounds.
The burly man stared in shock at the eagle retreating into the sky. He tried to raise his gun, but his trembling hands barely lifted before his body collapsed lifelessly.
Kreeeaaarrr!
The eagle circled once above before shrieking again. Instantly, the sky darkened with countless winged silhouettes—hawks, falcons, vultures, and crows—all diving toward the barricaded humans.
Simultaneously, the ground shook as the beast pack charged forward.
Their speed was overwhelming. Before the barricade's defenders could react, the lead eagle struck, its talons carving fresh wounds across a civilian's skull.
"Sanos!"
The elderly man cried out in anguish, watching the beasts swarm forward. Despair clouded his vision.
"Quick, escape, Grandpa Luo Ke!" someone shouted, grabbing the elderly man as they prepared to retreat.
"There's no escape."
The elderly man released his torch, letting it fall to the ground as he covered his face in tears. "This is retribution. We won't survive unless Wulang is appeased!"
This declaration seemed to paralyze those attempting to flee. However, the heavens and earth converged in chaos as the beasts broke through. A wolf lunged at the elderly man, jaws wide open.
They were giving up resistance.
Whoosh!
Suddenly, a gust of wind swept in.
The breeze carried a sharp whistle, lifting the elderly man's cloak from behind. The scent of blood filled the air before all sound vanished—the growls of beasts and cries of birds silenced in an instant.
"What... what is this?"
Someone's trembling voice broke the silence. The elderly man, untouched by beast fangs, opened his eyes to see a pile of smooth-cut flesh and bone fragments—like sliced by a Quick Blade.
Piles of beast and bird carcasses formed a gruesome tableau.
"Someone's in the sky!"
A voice cried upward.
The elderly man looked up to see a figure standing in the sky, slowly sheathing a blade.
He's flying?!
Kuro descended gently, facing the astonished crowd. "What exactly is Wulang?"
"Kuro Mr.!"
Behind him, Klah shifted into his werewolf form, arriving with Lida and Fen Ni in tow.
"Werewolf?!"
The civilians turned ashen, instinctively raising weapons. But soon their fear deepened further as Klah shifted back to human form.
While Kuro's group was familiar with Devil Fruits, for these civilians, such things bordered on legend. In regions like Twin-Horse Kingdom where witchcraft was already mythical, werewolves ranked as demons—terrifying enough to scare children.
Now seeing a werewolf transform into a human, their terror was complete.
"Where's that thing?"
Kuro asked.
Klah sniffed the air, shaking his head. "It disappeared. When you arrived, it had already withdrawn."
Even with Observation Haki, Kuro's speed couldn't match Klah's. The Lion Ape had evaded capture, frustrating him.
He placed a hand on the ground, narrowing his eyes. "Report their position. If I can't catch it, I'll force it out."
He was determined—turn this entire island upside down if necessary.
"People, hold onto something tight. Otherwise, you might get sick later", Kuro warned the crowd.
They exchanged bewildered glances, still reeling from shock.
"Officer!"
An elderly man emerged from the crowd, trembling. "Are you here to capture Wulang? If possible, please don't kill it. Bring it here—we want to show it something."
"Grandpa Luo Ke, Wulang is a wronged soul! How could it be captured?"
"Besides, we've already lost many lives. Even if you're Navy, there's no guarantee you'll catch Wulang. We should leave—this country is cursed."
"Silence!"
The elderly man roared, his blue veins bulging as the crowd bickered. "It's our fault! If we'd been braver back then, Wulang wouldn't be so furious!"
Kuro paused mid-movement, standing straight with a puzzled expression. "So... what exactly is Wulang?"
"Please, follow me."
The elderly man bowed deeply to Kuro before tremblingly leading him into the town.
Kuro sighed.
This looked like a story they wanted to tell.
Seriously? They'd already lost people and still wanted to tell stories?
