Chapter 367: The Mighty Flying Thunder God
Chapter 367: The Mighty Flying Thunder God
"In the end, it all comes down to a battle with Sensei Sarutobi." Obito sighed inwardly as he faced his teacher, who wore a gentle smile.
Obito warily eyed Sarutobi, knowing that after today's training, Yahiko would be returning to Tsunade for further instruction and that he wouldn't see her for a while. He wanted to leave a dashing impression in Yahiko's memories.
Kakashi, too, focused his entire being on Sarutobi, his former teacher.
As Sarutobi's disciple, Kakashi had undertaken numerous missions with him and was all too aware of his formidable strength.
Even when faced with a formidable opponent like the candidate for the next Raikage, Sarutobi had managed to bring them back alive and well.
"Begin!"
As soon as Sarutobi's voice fell, a barrage of shuriken and a massive fireball came hurtling towards him.
Without batting an eyelid, Sarutobi flung five Flying Thunder God kunai in different directions around him.
Kakashi's brows furrowed as he witnessed this. This was the true terror of the Flying Thunder God—even with his own incredible speed, it was impossible to keep track of all five locations simultaneously.
Kakashi's mind raced as he tried to predict Sarutobi's next move. Guessing that Sarutobi would target Yahiko, the medical ninja, he immediately burst into action, speeding towards the kunai closest to Yahiko.
Having witnessed the capabilities of the Flying Thunder God, Obito and Yahiko had already anticipated Sarutobi's move and quickly retreated to a safe distance after he threw the kunai.
Whoosh!
Sarutobi, having anticipated Kakashi's prediction, teleported to the Flying Thunder God kunai near Obito and, in a flash, threw three more kunai imbued with the Flying Thunder God jutsu, each aimed at one of the three combatants.
Even as the kunai were in mid-flight, Sarutobi activated the Flying Thunder God jutsu again, appearing right beside Yahiko and Kakashi.
"Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Jutsu!"
Obito, concerned for Yahiko's safety, spat out a barrage of tiny fireballs aimed at Sarutobi's position.
But to his surprise, Sarutobi vanished from sight the moment he appeared, only to reappear beside the Flying Thunder God kunai that was headed his way.
Obito's pupils constricted as he realized the gravity of the situation. He dared not underestimate Sarutobi and had started the battle in his Fire Breath Chakra Mode, activating his Sharingan. Through the power of the Sharingan, he could see Sarutobi's movements, but his body couldn't react in time.
Bang!
Obito was sent flying by Sarutobi's palm, crashing to the ground three meters away.
Only then did Kakashi realize how much Sarutobi had held back during the bell test. Sarutobi was capable of using the Flying Thunder God jutsu in such rapid succession.
Without the aid of the Sharingan's predictive abilities, Kakashi would only have realized that Sarutobi had teleported after he had already returned. This was a testament to Sarutobi's astonishing speed.
"Water Style: Water Dragon Bullet Jutsu!"
Yahiko swiftly formed the necessary hand seals, summoning a water dragon that surged towards Sarutobi.
Whoosh!
Sarutobi's figure flickered, and he vanished from his original position, reappearing beside the first Flying Thunder God kunai he had thrown, easily dodging the water dragon.
Kakashi's eyes gleamed as a bold tactic formed in his mind.
He glanced at Obito, who had picked himself up using the Carp Leaping Up a Waterfall technique, and signaled his plan with a subtle gesture, pointing a finger at the ground and then at Sarutobi.
Although Obito didn't fully understand Kakashi's intention, he got a general idea of what he wanted him to do.
"Fire Style: Fire Dragon Flame Bullet!"
Having activated the Fire Breath Chakra Mode at the start of the battle, Obito effortlessly converted a large portion of his chakra into fire-attribute chakra and spat out a torrent of flames.
Obito's chakra reserves rapidly depleted as he continued to spew forth flames, eventually forming a sea of fire that enveloped the entire area and burned with an intense heat.
The fire engulfed all the Flying Thunder God kunai, and under Obito's control, the sea of fire split into three separate flames that rushed towards Sarutobi.
This was Obito's most powerful fire jutsu, and after this move, he would be left with only ten percent of his chakra.
Obito knew that this attack wouldn't defeat Sarutobi, and if they lost badly, he would not hesitate to blame Kakashi, as it was his idea to use this strategy.
The towering inferno surged towards Sarutobi, engulfing him in a blanket of flames.
Kakashi paid no heed to Sarutobi; instead, he focused all his attention on Obito, slowly closing the distance between them.
Fzzzt! Fzzzt!!
Brilliant yellow lightning crackled around Kakashi's body, a stark contrast to the sea of red that surrounded them.
Kakashi activated his lightning-attribute chakra, energizing his body and enhancing his strength, while also controlling his breathing to the extreme and utilizing his Sharingan's predictive abilities to integrate all his powers into a single, devastating strike.
Whoosh!
Just as Obito used his Sharingan to track the trajectory of the flames to see if they would hit Sarutobi, a figure silently appeared behind him.
"Thunder Clap!"
Kakashi unleashed all his power, and the short blade in his hand transformed into a long, lightning-infused blade. Kakashi himself became a bolt of lightning as he slashed at the figure behind Obito.
BOOM!
A thunderous explosion rent the air, and the dazzling lightning seemed to tear through the very fabric of reality, filling the air with a murderous aura.
Sarutobi's arrival and Kakashi's attack happened in the blink of an eye. Even though the attack wasn't directed at him, Obito's heart skipped a beat due to the proximity of the assault.
Facing Kakashi's onslaught, a smile of approval spread across Sarutobi's face.
Boom!!
A thunderous clap of lightning struck the ground, leaving a narrow, charred gash in the earth behind Obito. Thanks to Kakashi's expert control, not even Obito's clothes were singed.
Bang!
A powerful force struck Kakashi's back, sending him crashing to the ground.
Obito, using the last of his chakra, threw a fire punch toward Minato.
Whoosh!
Minato's figure flickered, and he reappeared behind Obito, delivering a punch that knocked him to the ground as well.
Just then, Rin Nohara arrived. She had pushed her Water Style: Water Breathing technique to its limit and now launched an attack on Minato.
Minato then demonstrated to Rin that even without the Flying Thunder God technique, he was still incredibly powerful.
In less than three minutes, all three of them were lying on the ground.
"The Sharingan's copying function is so useless," Obito grumbled. "It's supposed to be able to copy ninjutsu, but it fails as soon as it's up against something powerful."
He had once tried to use his Sharingan to copy Mu Yue's other Chakra Modes of Breathing, but as expected, he had failed. He had also failed to copy the Conquerors Haki, and now he had failed again when trying to copy Minato's Flying Thunder God technique.
Obito didn't understand the point of the Sharingan's copying function. Surely, he didn't need it to copy basic ninjutsu that he could easily learn himself.
"Actually, you can copy most ninjutsu, but my Flying Thunder God technique just happens to be an exception," Minato said with a smile, offering some consolation.
"Obito, you need to pay more attention to the details during battles," Minato continued, beginning to review the fight. "The moment I hit you, I had already marked you with the Flying Thunder God jutsu, but you failed to notice. Kakashi, on the other hand, did. You should learn from him in that regard."
"However, your teamwork is excellent, and Obito, your attacks are decisive, and your Fire Style is very proficient. That's a great strength," Minato quickly praised after pointing out Obito's shortcomings.
The Fire Style just now was indeed impressive and even stronger than during the Chunin Exams, indicating that Obito had been diligently training.
"Hehe," Obito chuckled.
"Kakashi, you performed admirably. As soon as you realized Obito had been marked by my jutsu, you immediately devised and executed a countermeasure. However, it seems you may have underestimated Rin's abilities and lacked coordination with her," Minato said, addressing Kakashi's issues.
In Minato's eyes, while Kakashi had some minor problems, his overall performance was more than qualified for a Konoha Jonin.
Kakashi's raw strength, problem-solving skills, and tactical abilities were all outstanding.
The reason he lost to Minato was not due to any fault of his own, but simply because the gap in power between them was too vast. For Minato, killing an average Jonin was no different from killing a Genin.
Kakashi nodded, acknowledging his mistake. He had indeed overlooked Rin's abilities.
It wasn't that Kakashi had any negative feelings toward Rin, but her power level was such that he subconsciously assumed she wouldn't be of much use in such a battle.
Even if he were to include Rin's power and fight again, he didn't think the outcome would change.
As a medical ninja and part-time support, Rin could only be effective when the power gap between the combatants wasn't too large. And the gap between them and Minato was precisely that—too large.
If his teammate had been Might Guy, Kakashi would have adopted an entirely different strategy, as Might Guy's strength was not inferior to his or Obito's, and he could provide substantial assistance.
"Rin, your medical ninjutsu is excellent. Keep it up, and who knows? Maybe one day, you'll become a great medical ninja like Tsunade-sama," Minato encouraged Rin, who was currently treating Kakashi and Obito's injuries.
Rin's expression was somewhat complicated. Before, she would have definitely thanked Minato, but after spending some time with Tsunade, the idolization had worn off.
While Rin still considered Tsunade a great medical ninja, she had no desire to become like her. She didn't want to become someone who slept off a hangover until noon.
"I'll keep training hard," Rin replied with determination in her eyes.
She knew she had been a burden in this fight, and once they returned, she would dedicate herself to studying medical ninjutsu more intently.
Minato wore a relieved expression and then offered some additional advice to Obito and Kakashi.
Although Obito could unleash powerful Fire Style jutsu and Kakashi could deliver devastating slashes, Minato sensed that these techniques consumed a lot of chakra and stamina. They needed to be cautious when using them in battle.
Obito was already aware of this, having trained for so long, and Mu Yue had also reminded him countless times.
He had only activated the Fire Breath Chakra Mode at the start of the training and wanted to show off because it was just training. In a real fight, he would definitely save it for a crucial moment.
The Fire Breath Chakra Mode consumed an enormous amount of chakra just to maintain, and using ninjutsu on top of that made it even more draining.
PS: I overestimated myself. I only wrote 7.2k words, and it's already past 2 a.m. I can't stay awake any longer.
