Chapter 366: Will We Be Arrested by the Ministry of Magic and Sent to Azkaban?
Chapter 366: Will We Be Arrested by the Ministry of Magic and Sent to Azkaban?
"Did I accidentally break it? Professor Dumbledore won’t expel me for this, will he?" Hermione completely broke down when she realized that even Ivan couldn’t think of a solution.
Thinking about having to pay a large sum of Galleons to the Ministry of Magic and possibly implicating Professor Mcgonagall, who had vouched for her, Hermione was on the verge of tears.
"Don’t worry, that won’t happen!" Ivan quickly reassured her, then continued.
"Besides, if anyone should be punished, it should be me! This has nothing to do with you. You only overused the Time Turner to help me. I’ll explain this to them!"
Since Ivan knew that the Time Turner was damaged due to the System, he certainly wouldn’t let the innocent young witch, Hermione, take the blame.
However, Hermione wasn’t very grateful. She glared angrily at Ivan, feeling that since the Time Turner was damaged while in her hands, she bore a significant responsibility!
But soon, Hermione’s anger turned into worry. She pursed her lips and asked fearfully, "We broke such an important item. Will we be arrested by the Ministry of Magic and sent to Azkaban?"
"How could that happen?" Ivan shook his head, trying to sound relaxed.
"At worst, we’ll just have to pay some Galleons. You know I earned several thousand Galleons from Lockhart last year. It should be enough to cover the compensation!"
"Besides, I’m a recipient of the Order of Merlin and still a minor. The Ministry of Magic won’t do anything to us."
Although he said this, Ivan was still unsure.
The method for making a Time Turner seemed to have been lost, meaning each one was extremely precious. Losing one meant one less, and he had no idea how much it was worth. He wasn’t sure if the Galleons he had saved would be enough.
However, the Ministry of Magic wouldn’t possibly send two minor Wizards to Azkaban just because of a Time Turner. Ivan was confident about this.
"In any case, let’s go to the headmaster’s office and ask Professor Dumbledore." Ivan said reluctantly.
If he could avoid it, Ivan wouldn’t want to see Dumbledore. After all, he had many secrets, and meeting a Legilimens Master made him uneasy.
But the Time Turner issue couldn’t be left unresolved, and they had classes to attend the next day.
If they missed several classes, a professor would definitely report their absence to Dumbledore, so there was no way to hide it. It was better to confess honestly.
Perhaps if they showed a sincere attitude, Dumbledore might let it go.
Hermione, of course, had no objections. Seeking Professor Dumbledore was their only option now!
On the way to the headmaster’s office, Ivan reminded Hermione to insist that they overused the Time Turner due to their excessive love for learning, which ultimately led to its damage.
Using the Time Turner privately to travel back in time wasn’t a minor issue. The Ministry of Magic would definitely investigate and question what they did in the past.
The Ministry might even link it to the attack on Borgin and Burkes and conduct a thorough investigation, potentially leading to their expulsion or arrest and imprisonment in Azkaban.
"But will the Ministry of Magic really believe us? What if they use Veritaserum on us?" Hermione was very skeptical. Claiming they were too passionate about learning sounded too ridiculous for her to say.
"Don't worry, the Ministry of Magic won't misuse Veritaserum. We're not criminals, and even if we were, they wouldn't use it easily! So, by showing some abilities that surpass those of our peers, we can convince them to believe us!" Ivan explained.
In fact, Ivan had always found some of the Ministry of Magic's practices quite perplexing. For example, Veritaserum was a powerful tool for interrogation, but the Ministry of Magic rarely used it.
During the last Wizard war, many Death Eaters could easily escape punishment by claiming they were under the Imperius Curse, and the Ministry of Magic never even considered using Veritaserum.
The same was true when Voldemort returned. A few drops of Veritaserum could have verified the truth of Harry's statements, but Fudge and the Ministry of Magic refused to use it!
Perhaps there were political factors involved, such as the prominent backgrounds of many Death Eaters who escaped punishment, and the fact that the imprisoned pure-blood Wizards were mostly die-hard loyalists who had brought it upon themselves.
Additionally, Fudge might have wanted to bury his head in the sand and pretend everything was fine, refusing to believe the truth of Voldemort's return. However, it was clear that Veritaserum could not be used casually.
Since they didn't have to drink Veritaserum, Ivan wasn't worried about his words being exposed. The method for creating a Time Turner had been lost for hundreds of years, and no one in the Ministry of Magic should be able to determine the specific usage of this Time Turner before it was damaged.
With his Level 6 Alchemy skills, he could only roughly determine that the Time Turner was damaged due to overuse. The specific details of how it was overused and how far back it had been used were impossible to investigate, let alone for the people in the Ministry of Magic.
On the way to the headmaster's office, Ivan and Hermione coordinated their stories. By the time they reached the door, their lies were already perfectly crafted.
Considering that Hermione wasn't good at lying, Ivan told her not to speak casually once inside, leaving the task of dealing with the Ministry of Magic and Dumbledore to him.
After making all the necessary preparations, they arrived at the entrance to the headmaster's office, only to be stunned by the giant stone gargoyle guarding the door.
"Damn, we didn't even ask for the password to the headmaster's office!" Ivan slapped his forehead. He had been so focused on crafting their story that he forgot to ask a professor for the password.
"Zonko's Honeydukes?"
"Toffee Fingers?"
"Cockroach Clusters?"
Ivan tried each password on the giant stone gargoyle. When he said "Cockroach Clusters", the gargoyle shook and made a low rumbling sound before slowly rotating to reveal the hidden staircase behind it.
"Ivan, how did you guess that?" Hermione looked at Ivan in surprise.
"I've been to the headmaster's office a few times and noticed that Professor Dumbledore usually uses candies and drinks he likes as the password. So, I just tried it, and it seems my luck was good!" Ivan explained with a smile, then stepped forward confidently.
Hermione was suddenly enlightened and then a bit annoyed with herself for not thinking of it earlier.
