Chapter 365: Turbulence Over a House
Chapter 365: Turbulence Over a House
In the balmy spring month of March, when flowers bloomed and willows turned green, ZhenZhen and Wang Xiaojie planned a weekend trip to the outskirts to admire the spring scenery. She had already made plans with three classmates.
Wang Xiaojie said, "I have to work this weekend and won't be able to make it. Why don't you ask your dad? If he's free, he can take you and Xiao Zhang."
Among the four children, ZhenZhen, being the youngest and the only daughter, was naturally Daddy's little princess. She happily agreed, "Alright, I'll ask him when he comes home."
But as she waited, there was still no sign of Lu Jiaguang. He didn't return even by dinnertime. Wang Xiaojie didn't think much of it, as this was often the case when her husband was busy with work. What she didn't expect was that not long after dinner, a close family friend called to inform her that her husband had been taken away by the disciplinary inspection commission.
Wang Xiaojie felt as if her world was crashing down around her.
Lu Zhang and ZhenZhen were equally shocked by the news, but Lu Zhang quickly regained her composure. "Mom, I don't believe Dad would do anything illegal. I'm sure he's been wrongfully accused."
ZhenZhen immediately echoed her older sister's sentiment.
Wang Xiaojie gradually calmed down as well. After being married for so many years, she knew her husband's character very well. He had never taken a single cent that wasn't rightfully his, and he had always warned her to be vigilant and not let herself be corrupted.
After much thought, Wang Xiaojie decided to call Lu Hongjun, but she couldn't get through to him. Left with no choice, she called Lu Jiaguang's superior instead. The person on the other end of the line answered the call and spoke in a bureaucratic tone, saying that the organization would never wrong a good comrade, but they would also never go easy on those who had strayed down the path of corruption and degeneracy.
After hanging up, Wang Xiaojie felt a sense of calm wash over her. She didn't make any more phone calls or go out to look for help. She believed in her husband's innocence, and so she knew that the best course of action at this point was to do nothing.
Wang Xiaojie managed to coax the two children to go back to bed, while she stayed up all night in the living room. In the morning, she prepared breakfast and sent the children off to school before heading to the hospital with her bag.
The news of Lu Jiaguang's arrest had not spread widely, and the hospital was still unaware of the situation. Seeing her pale and weary face, they assumed she wasn't feeling well. The director even offered to give her the day off to rest.
Wang Xiaojie didn't refuse. This was a hospital, and a distracted mind could lead to fatal mistakes. After thanking the director, she made her way to the market.
When she returned to the residential compound for hospital staff, the other residents greeted her warmly. Wang Xiaojie felt that everyone was acting a bit strange, but with her mind occupied by her worries, she didn't give it much thought. Upon reaching home, she found the door unlocked, which caused her heart to skip a beat. She pushed the door open and hurried inside.
There, she saw Lu Jiaguang leaning against the sofa, asleep. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she knelt down to wake him, calling his name softly, "Jiaguang... Jiaguang..."
Lu Jiaguang opened his eyes and saw Wang Xiaojie's tear-stained face, which startled him. He quickly sat up and asked, "Honey, what's wrong? Who's bullying you?"
Wang Xiaojie wiped her tears and said, "Liu Jie said you were taken away by the disciplinary inspection commission. What happened? Why did they take you away?"
As Lu Jiaguang heard this, his expression turned solemn. "Someone reported me for embezzlement and bribery, and the evidence they have is the house in Chaoyang."
Wang Xiaojie was stunned once again, realizing that it was all because of that house.
Lu Jiaguang continued, "I told them that Jiaxin bought the house. She was grateful for my care for her over the years, and seeing that I was living in a small place, she bought that house as a gift for me."
"They didn't believe me. They said that even if she wanted to give me a gift, it wouldn't be something so extravagant. So, I told them about the house Jiaxin bought for San Shu and the 2 million yuan donation she made to the orphanage."
The reason he mentioned these things to the disciplinary inspection commission was to make them understand that if Jiaxin could donate money to help the orphans, who were strangers to her, it wasn't surprising that she would do even more for her brother, whom she was very close to.
Wang Xiaojie asked, "If they didn't believe you, then how did they let you return home?"
Lu Jiaguang sighed in relief and explained, "This morning, they called the relevant departments to inquire about Jiaxin's donation. I have nothing to fear since it's the truth. What surprised me was that Jiaxin didn't donate two million but two hundred million."
Wang Xiaojie stammered in shock, "T-two... two hundred million?"
Lu Jiaguang was equally startled when he heard this from the disciplinary inspection commission. He refuted their claims, saying they must have made a mistake: "First, she donated two million Hong Kong dollars, and then later donated another twenty million. This child, donating so much money without telling us a thing."
"The disciplinary inspection commission made several phone calls, and then someone higher up called them and asked them to release me."
"Although they let me return home, I still need to provide evidence that Jiaxin bought this house."
Wang Xiaojie immediately suggested, "Jiaxin gave me all the contracts and receipts for the house purchase and registration. They all have her signature on them, so these should be able to prove it, right?"
Lu Jiaguang nodded, "Yes. If that's not enough, we can call Jiaxin and ask the gentleman who helped us buy the house to come forward."
Wang Xiaojie quickly retrieved the purchase contracts and receipts, saying, "You should go and submit those documents now. If that's not enough, we can call Jiaxin later in the evening. She's in school right now."
Back then, the process of buying a house in Si Jiucheng didn't require much paperwork; it was a simple exchange of money for the keys. However, He Bin insisted on signing a contract to ensure there wouldn't be any trouble in the future.
"Alright," Lu Jiaguang agreed.
The disciplinary inspection commission obtained the evidence and believed that the house indeed belonged to Lu Jiaxin. However, they still needed to follow the proper procedures, so they went to find the previous owner and the person who handled the registration. Because He Bin was from Hongcheng, they remembered him clearly.
Lu Jiaguang had a clear conscience and wasn't afraid when he was taken away by the disciplinary inspection commission. However, when he found out that the person who reported him was his old colleague and friend, he was heartbroken.
"How did he know we bought a house? Did you tell him?" Wang Xiaojie inquired.
"No, I didn't tell anyone," Lu Jiaguang replied.
The couple had also instructed their children not to mention the new house to anyone. Firstly, they didn't want the people in the residential compound to know that they were buying a new house outside, as they feared that someone might try to take advantage of their current home. Secondly, they wanted to avoid any gossip. They planned to move out eventually, and they didn't care what people would say after that.
Lu Jiaguang said sadly, "Why would Lao Xu report me? We even drank together last month."
Wang Xiaojie added, "When you transferred here, you were half a rank lower than him, but now your position is two ranks higher. I've been telling you that his attitude towards us has changed, but you didn't believe me. Now look what happened; he almost got you into serious trouble."
Fortunately, Jiaxin had donated over two hundred million, and she had given Wang Xiaojie the receipts and contracts for the house purchase. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been able to explain themselves no matter what they said.
Lu Jiaguang fell silent.
Lu Zhang knew that the one who reported them was Xu Chunlei, and she regretted her mistake bitterly. "Dad, Mom, I'm sorry. Two weeks ago, when I was playing with Xu Jun, I accidentally mentioned that we bought a new house. He was very envious, but he promised not to tell his parents."
Now it seemed that Xu Jun had gone back and told his scheming father. Of course, the biggest mistake was hers; she had mentioned it to Xu Jun even though her parents had specifically instructed her not to tell anyone.
Wang Xiaojie coldly hmphed, "He knew about this since the beginning of the month. It looks like they've been investigating us in secret. No wonder he dared to report us by name. With our incomes, it would indeed be suspicious for us to be able to afford such a large house."
No matter how much that person calculated, he never expected the house to be a gift from Jiaxin. Trying to drag Jiaguang down with him, he ended up revealing his true colors to his friend. In a way, that was a fortunate turn of events.
