Chapter 365: Give Us a Reason Not to Kill You
Chapter 365: Give Us a Reason Not to Kill You
In the afternoon, it was time for Ancient Runes class.
This year, Professor Babbling still couldn't convince Dumbledore to allow her to combine classes for different grades.
This made Professor Babbling quite unhappy, and she, in turn, passed on her mood to the students.
"How does the arrangement of Magical Runes affect the completion of Runes?"
Autumn looked at the day's lesson and felt her head start to grow in circles.
"But Professor..." She raised her hand and said, "Isn't this the last thing we're supposed to learn? Today is the first day of school!"
"Yes, you performed very well last year..." Professor Babbling blinked her gray eyes and smiled, "So I've decided to skip the less important parts and use more time to teach you something real."
"Everyone, look here. There are many components to Runes, and we'll start with the most complex ones..."
Autumn's head grew even bigger.
When Professor Babbling drew the rune, Autumn couldn't understand it at all. She could only listen intently and hurriedly jot down everything.
Conna, sitting next to her, was in a similar situation. Her hand never stopped moving, and her quill was about to create sparks on the parchment.
When the class finally ended, Conna and Autumn breathed a sigh of relief, as if they had just survived a disaster, while simultaneously rubbing their wrists.
After taking notes non-stop for an entire class, their hands felt numb and painful, almost devoid of sensation.
At this moment, Conna unintentionally glanced at Kyle's parchment, which was spotlessly clean, without a single word written on it.
"Kyle, did you understand everything?" She asked.
Upon hearing this, Autumn also turned to look at Kyle, her expression as if she were gazing at a monster with eight arms and five heads...
In any case, he wasn't human.
"Understand everything? No, not at all." Kyle shook his head. "This part of the lesson requires gradual accumulation. Professor Babbling spoke so much and covered so many topics; how could anyone learn it all in just one class?"
"Then why aren't you taking notes?"
Conna asked in confusion, "Didn't you hear clearly? Do you want to copy mine?"
She pushed her thick stack of parchments towards Kyle, "But I might have missed some parts in the middle, so it might not be complete."
"I'm in the same situation."
Autumn also brought over her stack of parchments, "You can cross-reference as you copy, and if there are any differences, it'll help us mark them out..."
Autumn's head felt swollen and dizzy, and she didn't want to look at this content again for a while.
"No need, I'm not planning to copy notes."
Kyle looked at her and said, "Moreover, I never intended to. Otherwise, I would have used a Quill of Swift Writing to record everything."
"Oh... Quill of Swift Writing..."
Autumn grabbed her hair and let out a painful whimper, "Damn, I completely forgot about that!"
But Conna suddenly realized something and frowned, "You... aren't taking notes?"
"Yes."
Kyle shrugged and took out a thick book, placing it on the table.
"Evolution of Magical Runes"
"Someone recommended this book to me last year, so I borrowed it from the library for a year."
Kyle flipped to a page and pointed to the content, "Take a look for yourselves; isn't this exactly what Professor Babbling was talking about?"
"And these parts as well..." Kyle flipped through a few more pages.
Two heads leaned in simultaneously...
After a moment of silence, the atmosphere suddenly became eerie.
Conna and Autumn appeared on either side of Kyle, the surrounding air pressure dropping to an alarming level.
"You have one minute to explain," Conna gritted her teeth, staring at Kyle with malice.
Autumn's hands also clenched into fists, "Give us a reason not to kill you.
"It's not... I'm not involved. I told you."
Kyle turned to Conna, "I told you at least three times. It's all in the book. You don't need to memorize it, but you didn't listen. Every time you told me to shut up and not disturb you."
"And you're even worse." He glanced at Autumn on the other side, "I saw you weren't reacting, so I nudged your arm. But you actually tried to kick me... Luckily, I dodged quickly."
Kyle lifted the hem of his robe, revealing a partial shoe print.
Autumn's face turned red, stammering without a word.
Upon hearing this, she did recall such an incident. However, Professor Babbling was explaining a crucial point at the time, so she hadn't paid attention to what Kyle had said, and her instinctive reaction was to kick him.
Another moment of silence...
Autumn and Conna silently picked up their notes, turned, and rushed out of the classroom.
...
By dinner time, they had borrowed the book from the library and were reading it at the dining table.
For specialized books like this, the library had multiple copies, so it was rare to see a queue for them.
...
Seeing their deep concentration, Kyle didn't disturb them and walked over to sit beside Cedric.
The Great Hall was especially lively tonight, especially at the Gryffindor and Slytherin tables.
Even from a distance, Kyle could hear Ron's loud voice...
He was enthusiastically boasting to Fred about something.
"The first time I saw a baby unicorn, you won't believe it, it was golden!"
"Hagrid is amazing..." Hermione added, "I've read about it in books. Baby unicorns are rare, and they are usually deep in the forest, well-protected."
"I even held it..."
Ron squinted, his expression slightly lewd, "I don't want to wash my hands for the rest of the year."
Fred and George took a step back in disgust.
"Did you notice Malfoy?"
Harry also seemed excited, "From the moment we entered the Quidditch pitch, he kept bothering Hagrid. But after seeing the baby unicorn, he shut up."
"If you ask me, Hagrid shouldn't have let that guy touch the unicorn..."
"Ron, Hagrid is a professor now!" Hermione protested, "He has to treat every student fairly."
"Yeah, you're right..." Ron said nonchalantly, "But Snape obviously doesn't think so."
...
"Wow, a unicorn!"
Cedric also heard their conversation and exclaimed in amazement, "Incredible! In our third year, we only had Acromantulas and Nifflers. Last year, it was Fire Salamanders!"
"Is it only like this in the third year, or is it the same for all years?"
"I'm not sure." Kyle looked at the lively Gryffindor and Slytherin tables, "But you can go ask him."
"I'll go first thing tomorrow."
Cedric still couldn't believe it, "How did Hagrid manage it? Unicorns are extremely cautious magical creatures. I've never heard of anyone seeing them in class, let alone a baby one."
Kyle was eating a piece of steak and didn't speak.
He wasn't surprised that Hagrid could bring a unicorn.
If there was anyone in Hogwarts who could make unicorns feel at ease, it could only be Hagrid.
Even Professor Kettleburn, before his retirement, couldn't do it. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been stabbed in the stomach.
"This year's classes are amazing. Defense Against the Dark Arts and Care of Magical Creatures..." Cedric said excitedly, glancing at his schedule, "Too bad we only have Hagrid's class on Fridays."
