Chapter 365: As Long As You're Happy
Chapter 365: As Long As You're Happy
Ren Shuhan fell asleep with Suisu.
The two little girls were well-behaved, their heads touching adorably.
When Cousin Xiang checked on them in the middle of the night, she found the pair hugging each other's feet, sleeping contentedly.
Cousin Xiang smiled silently, straightened the girls' blankets without adjusting their sleeping positions, and quietly left the room.
As Suisu slept, Princess Qi of the Qi Kingdom still had work to do.
She needed to organize the gift list from the day's small banquet, as well as oversee the storage of the gifts into the mansion's warehouse.
Since the banquet was hosted on their account, these gifts would be recorded in the mansion's ledger.
However, if Princess Qi fancied any of the items or found them particularly beautiful and suitable for Suisu, she could set them aside for her daughter.
Among the gifts was a hair ornament sent by He Manor, elegant and luxurious. Princess Qi couldn't help but admire it.
Despite the fatigue evident in her brows, she couldn't contain her smile as she said, "The He family really put thought into this gift."
Autumn, who was tidying up the account books beside her, chuckled and replied, "It looks like something from the palace. Perhaps it's a gift from Her Royal Highness, the Noble Consort."
Princess Qi of the Qi Kingdom speculated that this was most likely the case.
The He family had already sent numerous valuable gifts to express their gratitude for saving their lives.
Now, they had sent another extravagant gift, and while Princess Qi didn't want to get entangled in the disputes between the different factions, she wouldn't refuse such thoughtful gifts.
After all, it was a matter of gratitude for saving their lives.
To not acknowledge this debt would be akin to being an ungrateful wretch, a disgrace!
Even for the sake of their reputation, the He family wouldn't neglect such courtesy.
They still had Her Royal Highness, the Noble Consort, in the palace, after all.
Seeing the He family's thoughtful gesture, Princess Qi of the Qi Kingdom smiled with relief. Her Suisu hadn't saved their lives in vain.
Thinking of that He family boy who always claimed Suisu as his betrothed, Princess Qi pursed her lips. In her mind, she thought, "That He family boy isn't suitable for Suisu. He lacks the steadiness needed."
She would let him have his way with words for now, but anything beyond that was out of the question for the time being.
Her child was still too young.
However...
Her eldest son was no longer a child, and it was time to consider his marriage prospects.
Initially, Princess Qi had planned to discuss this matter with the empress dowager after this busy period.
Now, with the eldest princess creating a ruckus in the palace and the empress dowager still unwell, Princess Qi felt that the timing wasn't right. She could only set this matter aside for the moment and quietly select some potential candidates herself, taking a slow and careful approach.
At this time, Meng Cefei, the secondary consort, had already retired to her chamber, and Ren Cefei, the other secondary consort, sought permission from Princess Qi to return to their manor that night.
As Ren Cefei returned to her manor, Duke Cheng of the Cheng Duchy was just about to get intimate with one of his newly acquired concubines.
He had already loosened his belt when a servant whispered from outside the door, "Cousin Ren has returned."
Duke Cheng felt his skin crawl, and no matter how alluringly the concubine tempted him, he remained as calm as still water, fastening his pants and tidying himself up before hurrying to the front courtyard.
As he ran, Duke Cheng wondered to himself, "What mess have I made recently?"
All he had done was take two new concubines. His sister usually didn't concern herself with such matters.
Why had she suddenly returned?
Wait, no, that wasn't right!
He recalled then, "Didn't the second young master do something inappropriate at the banquet today and anger the Qi King?"
Thinking of this, Duke Cheng grumbled to himself, "Damn it, you little rascal! Fine, you've made a mess, but why bring it home? I'm an old man, and you still want me to get scolded by my sister? Don't I have any face left?"
The Duke of Cheng was about to get intimate with one of his newly acquired concubines when a servant whispered from outside the door, "Cousin Ren has returned."
The Duke's face twisted in dismay, and despite the concubine's alluring advances, he remained calm and collected, fastening his pants and straightening himself up before hurrying to the front courtyard.
As he ran, he wondered, "What mess have I made now?"
All he could think of was taking on two new concubines. His sister usually didn't concern herself with such matters.
Why, then, had she suddenly returned?
Unless...
Then it hit him. "Could it be that the second young master did something foolish at the banquet today and incurred the Qi King's wrath?"
"Damn it, you little rascal!" he grumbled. "Fine, you've made a mess of things, but why bring it home? I'm an old man; do you really want me to get an earful from my sister? Have I no dignity left?"
