Chapter 363: The Anticipated Dark Arts Defense Class
Chapter 363: The Anticipated Dark Arts Defense Class
Altering the trajectory of the Summoning Charm proved to be much more challenging than Kyle had imagined. By the end of class, he could barely manage to keep the quill suspended half a meter in front of him.
During the second period of History of Magic class, he continued to practice relentlessly.
Professor Binns, a ghost with centuries of teaching experience, had consistently been voted Hogwarts' most popular professor. Typically, he wouldn't interfere with what students did in class, unless someone's snoring disturbed his reading.
"In 1612, fairies used a small pub in Hogsmeade as their headquarters and instigated a rebellion against wizards and witches..."
As always, he droned on about the history of the fairy rebellion, reciting word-for-word from the textbook.
In the back row, Kyle took advantage of the chorus of snores filling the classroom to practice the Summoning Charm under his desk.
Kona had intended to pay attention to the lecture, but her focus soon drifted to the quill that kept popping up under the desk.
Having sat next to him during Charms class, she knew exactly what he was doing and had even attempted to follow along, but her progress was much slower than Kyle's.
Perhaps it was because she was extremely bored and didn't want to sleep, that Kona, who had been ready to give up, decided to take out her wand and quill once more to give herself something to do.
...
When History of Magic class ended, the sleeping students suddenly woke up, rubbed their eyes, and noisily made their way to the Great Hall for lunch.
However, just as they reached the entrance to the Great Hall, Kyle was stopped once again.
This time, it wasn't Hermione who stopped him, but a Slytherin girl, Daphne Greengrass.
"Kyle, I'm here to buy a badge."
Daphne blocked Kyle's path and, without even greeting him, got straight to the point: "Name your price."
But Kyle didn't mind.
She was efficient when it came to paying, and whenever they launched a new product, she would be the first to buy the most expensive customized version.
This time, however, she had brought a little girl with her, a first-year student if Kyle recalled correctly.
"This is my sister," Daphne introduced impatiently as she noticed Kyle's gaze. "I'm buying the badge for her."
The little girl was much more polite than her sister, and although she seemed afraid of strangers, she greeted Kyle earnestly.
"Hello, I'm Astoria Greengrass from Slytherin, first year."
"Hello, I'm..."
"That's enough chit-chat," Daphne interrupted brusquely. "Show me the badge, and make sure it's the best one. Don't try to palm me off with the kind of rubbish that's in Longbottom's hands."
Her personality was consistently unpleasant.
"The badges sold out this morning," Kyle replied.
Daphne frowned, about to say something, when Kyle pulled out a delicate box from his pocket.
Daphne immediately recognized it as a yew box, and it was clearly made from fresh yew, not just some random dried-up twig.
Fresh yew had a softer color and a more noticeable sheen.
She had plenty of yew furniture in her room, so she could tell the difference.
"What's this?" Daphne's interest was piqued. "Didn't you just say they were sold out?"
"A dragon has more than just scales," Kyle smiled. "This will definitely meet your expectations."
Kyle opened the box to reveal a five-inch-long dragon fang that resembled a dagger, along with a coil of silver-white thread.
"How much?" Daphne asked, her eyes sparkling with interest.
"One hundred galleons," Kyle replied.
"I added the thread so you can easily attach it to your bag or robe," Kyle smiled. "If you don't need it, I can remove it, and it'll only be twenty galleons."
"No, that's fine," Daphne interrupted, not even bothering to haggle. She immediately handed the box to Astoria and produced a heavy pouch, which she handed to Kyle. "Here's one hundred galleons. It's a deal."
Astoria curiously opened the box and ran her fingers along the silver-white thread. A warm sensation flowed through her fingertips, and it felt pleasant.
She looked up at Kyle once more, her curiosity piqued.
When she had first heard the price of one hundred galleons, she had thought he was a swindler. But now, it seemed she had misjudged him.
Unicorn hair was notoriously expensive, so the price was justifiable.
For the same amount of money, this was a much better deal than the gem brooch she had at home—more useful and aesthetically pleasing.
"Did you just call him Kyle?" Astoria suddenly recalled. "A month ago, when the Malfoy family came to visit, Draco mentioned him."
"Including the map he gave me yesterday, I think I bought it from him as well."
Just then, Daphne's voice cut in.
"Let's go, Astoria."
The little girl snapped out of her daze and bid Kyle farewell. "It's been an honor to meet you. Goodbye!"
Then, she was pulled into the Great Hall.
"Are they really sisters?" Kona whispered. "Their personalities are so different."
"It is strange, but it's not unusual," Kyle said nonchalantly. "Percy and Fred and George are brothers. Do you think they're alike?"
"Um..."
Now that he mentioned it, it did seem reasonable.
Kyle tucked away the one hundred galleons and made his way into the Great Hall.
"Isn't one hundred galleons a bit too expensive?" Kona asked, watching his movements. "The unicorn hair items you sold before were only a few dozen galleons. Won't she refuse to buy it if you suddenly increase the price so much?"
"Not at all," Kyle replied as he sat down at an empty spot along the long table.
"This time, it's made from several complete tail hairs, so the price is naturally higher. Even if she doesn't buy it, I can always remove the thread later and use the unicorn hair for something else."
"Unicorn hair?" Cedric asked as he sat down next to Kyle.
But he seemed to be asking out of habit, not really expecting an answer. Before Kyle could reply, he leaned in conspiratorially and asked, "By the way, when do you guys have your Dark Arts Defense class?"
"Tomorrow morning," Kona replied, checking the timetable. "Why?"
"Just wait and see," Cedric said excitedly. "This year's Dark Arts Defense class is completely different from the past two years. It's amazing!
"After all this time, Headmaster Dumbledore has finally found a reliable professor!" Cedric exclaimed as he poured himself some pumpkin juice.
