Chapter 362: The Summoning Charm and Its Variations
Chapter 362: The Summoning Charm and Its Variations
Half an hour before the first class began, Hermione decided to take Kyle's suggestion and seek out Professor McGonagall. Whether she ultimately chose to continue using the Time-Turner or opted for freely selecting her classes, Kyle didn't know. However, going by her demeanor, he guessed it was the former. Hermione's hesitant expression as she left indicated that she had already made up her mind.
Even if she did use the Time-Turner, it really wasn't a big deal. After all, the conditions required to affect the time of others were quite stringent. Aside from that unique Time-Turner, it was highly unlikely that another existed in the entire wizarding world. Not to mention, it would require a powerful wizard like Salazar Slytherin manipulating things from behind the scenes.
Kyle shook his head, deciding not to dwell on the matter anymore. He turned and climbed the stairs, preparing to attend his first Charms class of the year.
...
In Kyle's opinion, Professor Flitwick's Charms lesson progressed a bit too slowly. The content for the first class of the fourth year was the Summoning Charm, and Kyle knew this spell even before he started school, to be frank.
Moreover, during the last few months of their first year, when Professor Lupin was teaching them about werewolves, he had also mentioned this charm and casually taught them the hand movements and incantation.
Back then, most students hadn't paid much attention to it, though.
...
"Accio quill!" Kyle gently waved his wand and then reached out to catch the quill that floated over from the shelf.
"Perfect demonstration, five points to Gryffindor!" Professor Flitwick said with a smile to everyone. "Now, everyone give it a try. This charm is quite simple...
"But remember, when casting the spell, you must focus on the object you want to summon, the clearer the better... Also, the hand holding the wand must be steady... Otherwise, it might land on your head."
Professor Flitwick stepped down from his stack of thick books and gave everyone a quill, just as he had done when they were learning the Levitation Charm.
This time, however, the quills not only had to float but also had to fly into their hands.
Professor Flitwick walked around the classroom, patiently correcting every minor mistake he saw. Soon, he arrived in front of Kyle.
Kyle was currently teaching Ryan the correct hand gestures. Ryan's Summoning Charm had been veering off-course, either snatching the quill from the Ravenclaw student opposite him or intercepting Michael's. The only quill that remained stationary was the one in front of him.
"If there are too many similar objects around, this situation can indeed occur," Professor Flitwick said as he stepped forward. "You can try dipping the quill in ink to make a mark and easily distinguish it."
Ryan suddenly understood and quickly lowered his head to look for ink.
Then, Professor Flitwick turned to Kyle. "I knew this wouldn't be a challenge for you."
He lowered his voice and whispered, "So, I have a different request for you this class."
"Go on, Professor," Kyle replied.
"Try altering the trajectory of the Summoning Charm and make the quill appear somewhere else."
"Like this, perhaps..." Professor Flitwick suggested, gently waving his wand-holding hand.
The quill on the table immediately flew up, but instead of moving toward Professor Flitwick, it circled a few times in front of him before flying straight into Kyle's hand.
A nostalgic look appeared on his face as he continued, "I remember my first Duelling Championship victory. I used a stone to knock my opponent's wand out of their hand with this charm, catching them completely off-guard."
Holding the quill in his hand, Kyle nodded in agreement.
Professor Flitwick was right; the biggest difference was that while the Levitation Charm couldn't move living things, the Summoning Charm could.
"Professor, do they share the same incantation?" Kyle asked eagerly.
This charm was indeed versatile; aside from quills, stones, and other such objects, there were many options to consider.
For instance, the biting teapot plant, the venomous tendrils, or even a freshly pulled Mandrake root, still wailing incessantly.
Conveniently, he had them all.
The only drawback to these magical plants was their difficulty in movement, which usually restricted their use to stationary traps.
But with this new charm, that limitation could be overcome.
With a simple wave of his hand, he could send the biting teapot plant or venomous tendrils straight towards an opponent—a quick and convenient way to create surprising attacks.
At Kyle's question, Professor Flitwick shook his head. "There's no difference in the incantation; it's still the Summoning Charm. So, naturally, the spell remains unchanged."
He explained, "What you need to do is identify and alter the trajectory of the spell's path mid-flight. Find a way to extend it to another location."
"Give it a try," Professor Flitwick said with a smile. "Consider it a little test. I recall making notes about trajectory magic in my third-year lectures, which you should have in your notes."
"Yes, it's on the same page as the Pathfinding Charm," Kyle nodded, and then he drew out his wand...
"Accio quill!"
On a shelf not too far away, a quill wobbled and flew over, appearing drunk as it swayed left and right, spinning in circles and then retreating slightly.
Professor Flitwick watched intently until the quill finally landed in Kyle's hand, at which point he nodded in satisfaction.
"Very good... Well, I mean to say that this requires a high degree of magical control. It's normal to fail the first few attempts."
Clearing his throat, Professor Flitwick continued with a smile, "But I'm sure it won't be a problem for you. A few more tries, and you'll get the hang of it... Remember, focus on altering the trajectory."
With that, he turned and walked away, his hands clasped behind his back.
"Mr. Todd and Mr. Vinnard, we're only using quills for this exercise, so put away those Pop-and-Cracklers..."
Before he could finish his sentence, a few Pop-and-Crackler cards collided in mid-air and exploded! Fortunately, these were entertainment props that made a loud noise but caused no harm.
However, the loud noise drew everyone's attention, and some students who had almost succeeded with their Summoning Charms suddenly jumped in surprise, causing their quills to drop to the ground.
As for the two instigators, they each lost ten points and received double the homework.
