Chapter 36: Opera House
Chapter 36: Opera House
Uncle Gjeril stayed behind to continue discussing the divorce matters, while Kinsey and the sisters E vageline accompanied Karl to look at the house.
This was a two-story house built with a mix of brick and wood.
The walls were specially reinforced, and the doors were mostly arched. The flying beam design made the house appear lighter and more exquisite.
The upper floor was for living, and the ground floor was for receiving guests. The house was divided into seven rooms, each of which was quite spacious, including the bedrooms.
The kitchen and dining room were located near the entrance for the convenience of food and drink preparation and distribution.
The living room was in the center of the house.
On the upper floor, besides the bedrooms, there was a cloakroom that could be converted into a small chapel or a laboratory.
There was also a bathroom, divided into an inner and an outer part, with the outer part for washing and the inner part for using the toilet, separated by a folding door.
Overall, the layout of the house was reasonable, but it lacked the warmth of people and was somewhat desolate due to the lack of furniture and the long absence of inhabitants.
Additionally, the wooden house had its drawbacks. Due to its age and the damage from insects, many wooden beams were rotten. Repairing it for formal residence would require significant effort and expense, which would greatly affect its selling price.
"There is also a storage room underground. Due to design issues, the ventilation is poor, so you should ventilate it first before going in."
Kinsey led Karl around:
"How about it?"
"Very good."
Karl nodded:
"I am very satisfied."
Compared to the house, he was even more satisfied with the courtyard, which was over a hundred square meters. He could rest in the courtyard anytime he wished.
Every time he returned from the dark and gloomy Black city, the first thing he wanted to do was to bask in the sun.
Moreover, the separate courtyard made it convenient to transport goods.
As for the other defects, they were not critical to him. As a wizard apprentice, he had ways to resolve them.
"Good satisfaction."
Kinsey smiled:
"Then let's sign the contract. Forty gold coins, I didn't think you had such a large inheritance."
Inheritance!
Karl explained that his grandfather had left a legacy specifically at the Montbatten Bank.
As for whether others believed it...
Believe it or not.
"Once I buy the house, I'll be penniless." Karl sighed with a thoughtful expression:
"Let's pay ten gold coins first, and the rest within a month."
"No problem." Kinsey waved his hand:
"You're my cousin, and I still have some trust in you."
She looked very happy, as forty gold coins were far more than the house’s actual value.
As for the sadness of the divorce...
She would only rejoice at regaining her freedom and freeing herself from the marriage.
"E vageline."
After signing the contract and before the two women were about to leave in the carriage, Karl remembered something and invited E vageline:
"Are you free this evening? I have a friend performing at the Vium Opera House tonight. Would you like to come with me?"
"Ah!"
E vageline first showed great excitement, then looked at Kinsey, thought for a moment, and gently shook her head:
"I have to stay with my sister."
Her sister's divorce meant there were many things to handle at home. Even if she didn't need to help, she couldn't just play on her own.
"Understood." Karl showed understanding:
"Then we'll meet again when we have time."
"Thin pancakes! A plate of thin pancakes!"
"Fried fish and chips, sugared fruit, cheaply sold..."
"..."
At the entrance of the Vium Opera House, the stalls lined the road, making it crowded. The cries of vendors rose and fell.
The people maintaining order had to shout and push to barely clear a path.
Getting off the carriage, Karl followed the crowd toward the ticket entrance, when someone suddenly grabbed his sleeve.
"Karl!"
"Um." Karl turned, surprised:
"Officer D ana, what... is that outfit?"
As the eldest daughter of Viscount Sassoon, Dana had no shortage of wealth, and her clothing was naturally exquisite and luxurious.
Today was different.
The corseted blouse made of linen was dull in color and had patches, her boots were caked with mud, and her headscarf was simple.
Her delicate features were covered in mud, and at first glance, she didn't look any different from the lower-class women on the streets.
It was no wonder Karl couldn't recognize her at first, but this disguise was clearly intentional.
"So, you're conducting an investigation?" Karl exclaimed.
Recently, Dana had rarely been seen at the Patrol Hall, as she was said to be fully engaged in investigating the mummy case.
Unfortunately, not many were willing to take risks.
The members of the Patrol Hall were all from wealthy families, with no shortage of food and drink, so who would be willing to risk their lives?
"Hmm."
Dana's expression remained blank.
"You should have concert tickets on you. I'll pay double the price. Sell them to me; I have business inside."
"Officer," Karl shook his head. "The concert requires neat attire. With your current appearance, even with tickets, you might not be able to get in."
"Come on!"
Dana raised her eyebrows, then let out a soft hum, wiping her face and removing her headscarf, letting her long hair fall loose.
With her simple actions, although her clothes remained old, her entire demeanor transformed.
Especially her delicate features that radiated a brilliance, overshadowing everything else.
She took a step forward, holding Karl's arm, and leaned her body closer, walking side by side, appearing like a loving couple.
"Please come in, you two."
The ticket inspector checked the tickets, his gaze momentarily pausing on Dana before he gestured with an open hand.
It wasn't uncommon for wealthy individuals to bring their mistresses to high-end venues, and this mistress was of exceptional quality.
The only thing lacking was the man's generosity; he didn't even buy her decent clothes for the theater.
The peculiar stares did not affect Dana. After entering the theater, she immediately released Karl's arm, creating distance between them, leaving Karl, who was immersed in the soft and tender experience, feeling a bit disappointed.
"Thanks, I'll treat you to a drink if I get the chance."
Dana politely declined, not waiting for Karl's response, and quickly blended into the crowd, disappearing from sight.
...
The Baro Opera Group performed with great enthusiasm. The singer's voice was clear and bright, with powerful penetration.
The music surged like a mighty wave, each note seemingly alive, dancing and spinning in the air, striking directly at the heart.
But even with such a wonderful performance, some people's minds were elsewhere.
In a corner of the theater.
"Three gold coins?"
A beautiful woman exclaimed in a low voice, "Why such a sudden price increase?"
"It's normal for prices to rise when goods are scarce," a man in a long robe coldly replied, "Of course, you can choose not to buy."
"Three gold coins is really too expensive," the woman's expression became troubled. "I've already spent nearly fifty gold coins on you. Can you give me a discount this time?"
"I said..." The man's voice was indifferent. "You can choose not to buy."
The woman's expression changed, and she fell into a struggle before finally sighing in resignation. "I'll buy it."
She took out a delicate purse and handed over one gold coin and twenty gold pounds.
"Is the product correct?"
"When has it ever been wrong?" The man took the money, and a smile finally appeared on his face. He then handed over a porcelain vial. "The same as always, three drops once a week."
"Clink!"
Just then, a hand suddenly reached out from the darkness and gripped the vial.
Dana's figure appeared.
"So, this is the so-called Purity Potion?"
"You..." The man's expression changed, and he quickly darted away.
"Trying to escape?"
Dana coldly replied.
"Do you think you can get away?"
