Chapter 36: Martial Law
Chapter 36: Martial Law
In another servant's dormitory, Rain, who had been startled awake by Browbeard's cry, immediately snapped to attention.
He heard Browbeard's cries clearly, not only for help but also shouting the word 'monster'.
Rain quickly roused George beside him and instructed him to wake everyone up.
Rain himself rushed to the door and peered outside.
Just as he was wondering why the opposite servant's dormitory was silent, a team of five estate patrol guards rushed towards the other dormitory with swift strides.
The next moment, Rain's heart clenched with fear. His scalp prickled, and his pupils constricted.
In his line of sight, a massive black shadow suddenly burst out from the opposite servant's dormitory, shattering the door into fragments, and in an instant, it covered several guards like a torrential rain.
As the guards raised their hands to shield themselves, two of them were knocked away.
Without hesitation, the massive humanoid shadow, holding a small, bare-chested servant, quickly vaulted over the fence with incredible speed.
Judging by its speed, it was undoubtedly faster than the sprinting Bolt that Rain had witnessed in his previous life.
In the moonlight, Rain vaguely made out the creature's robust body, its jackal-like ugly face, and its thick, hairy arms.
"What kind of monster is this?" Rain was shocked.
A sense of crisis instantly filled his heart.
In Rain's imagination, with his Profession Panel, he believed that as long as he diligently worked towards his goals, following a systematic plan, he would eventually reach the pinnacle of this world.
However, the scene before him brought him back to reality.
Sometimes, even if he didn't seek danger, danger might find him.
If that monster had chosen their dormitory, would he have had no choice but to rely on luck and sit idly, awaiting his fate?
No!
Absolutely not!
He needed to redouble his efforts. Rain's expression was as calm as still water, but his heart was in turmoil.
Soon, the bustling Habsburg Manor was filled with commotion as guards rushed from all directions. One after another, guards wearing nasal helmets, chainmail, and wielding swords, shields, or polearms, arrived at the scene.
"Woof, woof, woof!"
Some guards led Bloodhounds, relying on the dogs' keen sense of smell and the traces on the ground to quickly determine the direction and trail of the fleeing monster.
However, the guards did not release the dogs to track the creature, as if they were waiting for someone.
Rain and the other servants had already stepped outside, standing at a distance, observing the guarded opposite dormitory and the pale-faced servants who were either vomiting or sobbing. They couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding.
If it weren't for the fortuitous goddess's protection and if the monster had chosen to hunt them instead, the consequences would have been terrifying, sending shivers down George and the other servants' spines.
Before long, a tall figure clad in thick plate armor and draped in a black cloak approached. The guards saluted, "Sir Lloyd!"
It turned out that this imposing middle-aged man was Sir Lloyd, the steward and knight of the Habsburg Manor.
"What's the situation?"
Sir Lloyd's arrival immediately brought order to the previously chaotic scene.
This was the awe-inspiring might of a full knight, swiftly calming the people's hearts.
"Two servants are dead, and one is missing, likely abducted!"
"Based on the accounts of the estate patrol guards and the large footprints left on the ground, the attacker was probably a stray werewolf, massive in size and possessing incredible strength, not an ordinary werewolf.
A guard with a sergeant's insignia reported, "A werewolf broke into the servant's dormitory and caused a significant amount of damage. We estimate it to be a highly aggressive and rare werewolf."
"Take me to the scene," ordered Sir Lloyd, a knight with golden hair and a goatee, after hearing the guard's report.
"Yes, sir!"
Two chainmail-clad guards led the way, and the group arrived at the servant's dormitory where Browbeard and the others were located.
At the dormitory entrance, there was a gaping hole nearly three meters high and over two meters wide. The surrounding wooden boards were shattered into sharp, jagged pieces, indicating that the werewolf had simply charged through the door. The sheer strength of the creature left Sir Lloyd deep in thought.
"Sir Lloyd, this must be an extremely rare and ferocious werewolf!" a deep male voice spoke behind Sir Lloyd. It was Sir Percival, the knight instructor of the noble heirs of Master County.
"Sir Percival!" The guards saluted in unison.
"Sir Percival, what do you suggest?" Sir Lloyd turned to Sir Percival.
"The forest at night is not our territory. I suggest we strengthen the security around the entire estate tonight and contact the new sheriff of Glintstone Town, Sir Hamilton, tomorrow morning to organize a search party."
Surprisingly, despite Sir Percival's imposing stature, his suggestion was cautious and meticulous.
Indeed, fighting a ferocious werewolf in the dense forest at night would be a challenging task, even for a knight who had transcended into the extraordinary.
More importantly, the night forest was not a human-dominated area, and there was a chance of encountering monsters even more terrifying than a feral werewolf. Failure to subdue the creature could result in significant casualties.
After a moment's thought, Sir Lloyd nodded and turned to a nearby messenger, "Strengthen the security, especially around the servants' quarters, stables, and barns."
"Also, send word to Glintstone Town immediately, informing them about the discovery of the ferocious werewolf."
"This werewolf might not return, but there's a chance it could head to Glintstone Town for food. Let's ensure they are prepared."
"Yes, sir! Sir Lloyd!" The messenger saluted and quickly mounted his horse, departing from the estate.
As Rain, George, and the other servants listened from a distance to the conversation between Sir Lloyd and Sir Percival, Humbert, the servant swordmaster in chainmail, hurried over and addressed Rain and the others, "Servant training is suspended. All of you, return to Glintstone Town immediately."
George and the other servants exchanged puzzled glances, but Rain quickly understood why Sir Lloyd had made this decision.
With the sudden attack by a feral werewolf on the estate, it was best to reduce the pressure on the Habsburg Manor by sending the servants back to their homes until the danger was eliminated.
In the event of heavy servant casualties, Sir Lloyd, as the estate's primary supervisor, would be held accountable. Even as a knight, he could face repercussions from the higher nobility.
Therefore, the best course of action was to send the servants back to their respective homes.
For any unfortunate servants who perished, proper compensation and appeasement of their families would be necessary to minimize the impact.
The group of servants, escorted by Humbert and several guards, hurried back to Glintstone Town under the cover of night.
