Chapter 358: Benma Castle
Chapter 358: Benma Castle
The next morning, Kuro stood at the docks watching Lucius Krowarship disappear into the horizon, his expression unreadable.
Yesterday's discussions had revolved around Edward Weibull and the escalating power struggle within the Navy.
Akainu and Kuzan's conflict had reached a fever pitch—Akainu's faction backed by the World Government, while Kuzan enjoyed Sengoku's protection. Though Sengoku's influence gave Kuzan an edge in internal Navy support, ultimate authority still rested with the World Government.
Akainu, favored by the World Government, was the likely choice to become Fleet Admiral. But it wouldn't be simple. Their conflicting ideologies and personal animosities ran deep—especially after the Ohara incident. While Sengoku's presence had maintained uneasy truces between their factions, true cooperation would collapse once one side claimed dominance.
As for Gramps, he remained the ever-opportunistic mediator—happy to work with whoever claimed the top post.
Kuro had no intention of returning to the current Headquarters. The lower ranks might not feel it yet, but the upper echelons already sensed the storm approaching.
"With Gramps temporarily stationed in West Blue", he mused aloud, "we don't need to worry about Pegasus Island's military presence anymore. Clean up and prepare for departure—we're granting everyone leave to explore Twin-Horse Kingdom."
"Food feast time!" Lida cheered, practically vibrating with excitement.
The crew's expressions brightened. Stuck at Pegasus Island, their routines had been nothing but drills and patrols. Even rare days off offered little—Pegasus Island's amenities were still incomplete, limiting them to drinking in dingy taverns.
The flagship carried 400 crew, frigates 200 each, while patrol ships barely 80-100. Pegasus Island's Navy numbers couldn't even fill their vessels. While the base itself was secure, Kuro believed more manpower would deter potential threats. A strong visible presence often discouraged mischief before it started.
Their destination loomed ahead. Though Twin-Horse Kingdom had endured recent conflicts, most battles had occurred on Pegasus Island. The mainland remained largely unscathed, with occasional pirate threats easily handled by the Kingdom Army.
The capital city, Benma Castle, lay inland north of the port. Flat grasslands dominated the island, punctuated by scattered forests. Its sole export—horses—struggled in a world where creatures like Landwalkers, lizards, and crocodiles dominated as preferred mounts.
"Whoa! This port city's massive!" Lida exclaimed as their ship approached.
Benma Castle's harbor bustled with activity—merchants and even cautious pirates gathered here, drawn to its safety near Reverse Mountain. Compared to Pegasus Island's bleakness, this place thrived with commerce.
A Navy warship already docked there. Standing proudly beside it, Kas awaited them.
"Commander Kuro!" Kas snapped a crisp salute as Kuro disembarked. "Mission accomplished—we've eliminated all pirates in surrounding waters!"
Kuro twitched involuntarily. I never ordered you to eliminate pirates! And since when did you start targeting Revolutionary Army operatives? Why attack a high-ranking member?!
Forcing a smile, he returned the salute. "Excellent work, Lieutenant Kas. But remember—situations involving Revolutionary Army require my direct command. You're only a lieutenant, after all."
You're just a Headquarters lieutenant. Your job is coastal patrols. Report Revolutionary Army encounters to me—I'll handle them. No more heroics.
"Understood, Commander! I'll keep striving to improve!" Kas declared.
Klah and Lida had already been promoted to majors. Kas needed higher rank to better support Kuro.
After reuniting with Kas, the group rode northward. Renting horses, they galloped toward Benma Castle, reaching the city within half a day.
Benma Castle's layout impressed—its massive castle crowned the only hill, while symmetrical streets radiated outward. The late king's governance had created remarkable order.
"Clean streets!" Kuro observed, entering the main gate.
The sunlit roads gleamed like polished jade, their pristine condition unusually soothing.
"Blame the late king's severe cleanliness obsession", Klah explained. "This city's spotlessness attracts settlers."
"Enjoyable visit", Kuro nodded. "First, we'll present our respects to the king. Then you're all free to explore."
