Chapter 357: Substitute Teacher
Chapter 357: Substitute Teacher
Although Nian Fulu was the captain, he didn't have a dedicated vehicle when not on duty. Since they were heading to the city's headquarters, Chen Chuan drove him in his modified Gader car after they reached the alley.
As Nian Fulu settled into the car, he quickly noticed the modifications with a few glances, "Little Chuan, this car has been customized? And you've installed armored plates?"
Chen Chuan confirmed, "Yes, a friend helped with the modifications."
"This must have been expensive, right?"
"He didn't charge me for it."
Nian Fulu was a bit surprised, "Then your friend is quite a good one."
"Yes, he's quite a good friend."
Since there wasn't much traffic and the situation was urgent, Chen Chuan sped up. In less than half an hour, they arrived at the Patrol Bureau Headquarters in Changbao District.
After understanding the situation there, Chen Chuan joined the Patrol Bureau's convoy and headed towards the location where the car instructor had been killed.
His mind was occupied with thoughts about the cause of death. Generally, only a Third Limit Fighter could handle another of the same limit. However, there were more methods than that.
For instance, he possessed the Lynx Legend Stone Tablet, which allowed him to kill enemies from a distance. But was there anyone in Yangzhi City with such abilities? If so, no one in the city could be considered truly safe.
The convoy left the city and reached the incident site in less than an hour. Chen Chuan realized that this location was Cai Family Village, where Guan Xiaohui and the others had stayed. However, from a distance, it appeared empty.
Car Lie's death site, a small grove less than 500 meters from the village. He was lying between two trees, and it was almost impossible to identify him when they first saw him because his body was intact, but his head was missing.
At that moment, an elderly man was examining the body.
Chen Chuan recognized the coroner; he had seen him before when he killed the Mutual Aid Society members. The coroner had been responsible for examining the bodies on that occasion.
As soon as he arrived, a patrol officer on the scene recognized him, "Hey, isn't this Little Chuan?"
"Who?" another officer nearby asked.
"Little Chuan, oh, he's Captain Nian's nephew. Have you forgotten about last year's incident?"
"Oh, right! I remember now. It was him, and I heard he went to Central City later?"
Another officer chimed in, "Hey, we can't call him Little Chuan anymore. Look at that uniform; he must be an officer in Central City."
"Yes, yes, we can't mess up the titles."
Chen Chuan approached and took a closer look at Car Lie's body. His limbs had been broken by heavy blows, and the cut on his head was smooth, indicating that it had been severed after death, based on the traces.
There were no signs of recovery in the broken limbs, suggesting that the fatal injury was likely on the head, which had been removed to prevent identification of the wounds.
It was hard to believe that the person who had been surrounded by admirers and displayed his prowess just yesterday was now lying here in such an undignified manner.
Chen Chuan inquired about the situation and learned from a patrol officer who had accompanied Car Lie that they had received a message the previous night. A female informant in the village had reported that the villagers were preparing to evacuate.
Upon hearing this, Car Lie immediately decided to lead a team to intercept them. However, as they neared the village, Car Lie found the road conditions unfavorable and the car too slow. So, he proceeded ahead on foot to intercept the villagers.
By the time the patrol team reached the village, it was already empty. Car Lie's whereabouts were unknown, so they split into two groups. One group stayed behind, while the other followed the traces.
The villagers seemed to have evacuated quickly, heading into the mountains under the cover of darkness. This made it challenging for the patrol team to catch up, and they eventually failed to apprehend anyone. They reported the situation to the bureau.
As there was no confrontation and the villagers' weapons were no match for the Patrol Bureau, the bureau didn't pay much attention to the matter. After all, the village was already empty.
It wasn't until the next morning that a patrol officer, who had gone into the woods to relieve himself, discovered a body under a tree that resembled Car Lie's. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he immediately reported it to the bureau.
The captain in charge asked the coroner, "Can you confirm it's Car Lie?"
He couldn't quite believe it. Although Car Lie was disliked and even feared by most people in the bureau, his abilities were undeniable, leading the captain to suspect it might be someone else.
The coroner calmly replied, "Confirmed."
Chen Chuan spoke up, "There's no mistake." He had shaken Car Lie's hand and interacted closely with him the day before, so he was certain, even without the head.
Chen Chuan surveyed the surroundings and noticed some broken branches and crushed grass. He said, "The entire fight was extremely brief. Car Lie was killed almost instantly, without any effective resistance."
The captain was shocked, "Are you sure?"
Chen Chuan looked at him and slowly said, "As an Enforcement Agent from the Handling Bureau and a Third Limit Fighter, I'm very sure, and I take responsibility for this conclusion."
The atmosphere grew silent for a moment.
After a while, the battalion commander snapped back to reality, a hint of awe in his eyes. He instructed the others, "Why are you all still standing there? Write down what Commander Chen reported, and let's take Instructor Che's body back."
With the village no longer in existence and the villagers' whereabouts unknown, there was no need for a siege. Moreover, if there was a powerful individual on the other side, they wouldn't stand a chance.
After Chen Chuan returned with the convoy, he went to the headquarters and briefed Director Guan on the situation. He initially intended to help out, but after a brief conversation, he learned that the bureau had already requested support from higher-ups, and the assigned personnel would arrive soon. With no reason to stay, he bid farewell to Nian Fulu and left.
Chen Chuan had planned to meet up with Ding Jiao today, so he adjusted his mood and put the matter aside. He headed out to meet his old classmate.
Upon meeting, they inquired about each other's well-being before going boating on the lake. After lunch, Ding Jiao brought out a few two-wheeled motorcycles from his shop, and they went for a ride, followed by a visit to the newly opened amusement park to ride the roller coaster. After dinner, they caught a few new movies.
Although the movies here lacked the vividness of those in the Boundary Token, being with friends made the experience enjoyable.
They watched two movies back-to-back and only exited the theater around 10 p.m. After setting a time for their next outing, they each returned home.
Such a scenario would have been unimaginable half a year ago, but after the Mo Lan Corporation and the Bloodstain Gang were eradicated, Director Guan of the Patrol Bureau took charge and significantly improved the city's security. Even at this hour, pedestrians and vehicles still passed by on the streets.
This area wasn't even the most bustling part of the city; the south side was now almost perpetually awake.
Chen Chuan and Ding Jiao parted ways, and he drove back to the Patrol Bureau's residential area. As he parked and stepped out of the car, he suddenly sensed something. Turning around, he spotted a middle-aged man in a double-breasted suit walking towards him under the streetlight.
Chen Chuan immediately recognized the man.
"Instructor Wen?"
The man approaching was none other than the former chief instructor of the Patrol Bureau, Mr. Wen.
Instructor Wen smiled and nodded, "Enforcement Agent Chen."
Chen Chuan's mind raced as he heard those words. "Director Guan mentioned that someone would take over Instructor Che's duties. Is that you, Instructor Wen?"
Instructor Wen confirmed, "Yes, since Instructor Che passed away, I was assigned to clean up the mess. Until a suitable replacement is found, I will continue serving as the chief instructor."
He glanced at Chen Chuan and sighed, "When Battalion Commander Nian brought you to me for training, I thought you lacked the talent. I guess I misjudged you."
Chen Chuan knew that Instructor Wen's assessment was accurate. Excluding himself, he had started late and struggled to match those who had trained in martial arts from a young age.
"I appreciate your honest feedback, Instructor Wen."
Instructor Wen smiled, "Although I couldn't teach you back then, I can make up for it now. I received the telegram you sent to Teacher He."
Chen Chuan was surprised to hear this.
Instructor Wen smiled, "Since the Furnace Breathing Technique requires personal guidance for its application, and he knew I was in Yangzhi City, he requested me to instruct you. Allow me to introduce myself," he extended his hand, "I'm Wen Tong, a Pure Lineage Combatant and the temporary chief instructor of the Yangzhi City Patrol Bureau."
Chen Chuan understood and shook his instructor's hand, "Instructor Wen, I'm Chen Chuan."
Instructor Wen said, "Student Chen, I can spare three to four hours daily to teach you. It will take five to ten days to cover the main applications of the Furnace Breathing Technique. Do you have any questions?"
Chen Chuan replied confidently, "None at all."
Instructor Wen smiled, "Then, Student Chen, feel free to seek me out whenever you're ready. From what I can tell, I won't be leaving Yangzhi City anytime soon."
"Thank you, Instructor Wen."
After their conversation, Instructor Wen departed.
As Chen Chuan walked back, a thought suddenly crossed his mind.
Instructor Wen seemed well-informed about Yangzhi City, and Teacher He had sent him a telegram, which implied that Instructor Wen might have been in the city the previous day.
Chen Chuan vaguely recalled that Instructor Wen possessed a skill to split open skulls. Connecting this with Instructor Che's death, he wondered if there was a connection.
He shook his head, deciding not to pursue the truth. Whatever the reality was, it had nothing to do with him, and he had no desire to uncover the details.
