Chapter 356: Purchasing a Burial Plot
Chapter 356: Purchasing a Burial Plot
Lu Jiaxin tasked Zhang Sinan, her personal secretary, with the task of finding a suitable burial plot, a responsibility that included managing her boss's personal affairs and ensuring a smooth process. While Zhang Sinan had been temporarily absent, immersing herself in the intricacies of inland China during that period, and despite the potential challenges of being a woman in such a role, she remained committed to fulfilling her duties.
Zhang Sinan scouted two prime locations, differing only in size. One plot sprawled across over 1,800 square meters, while the other was a more modest 900 square meters.
The following day, Lu Jiaxin inspected both options and decisively chose the larger plot, nestled amidst verdant mountains and overlooking the serene ocean. "We'll take this one," she declared.
Zhang Sinan had already consulted a feng shui master, who proclaimed the sites as auspicious, promising that the burial of ancestors in such a location would bring blessings and protection to future generations. Superstition and tradition held sway among Hong Kong's affluent, and the services of a feng shui master were de rigueur for burials and tomb relocations—a custom Lu Jiaxin was happy to observe.
On this occasion, Lu Jiaxin opted to pay in full, forgoing the need for a loan.
The next evening, Lu Jiaxin invited Su Heyuan to dinner, mindful of his previous criticism of her frugality. This time, they dined at Xiaori Cuisine, renowned across Hong Kong for its culinary delights.
Su Heyuan, a regular patron, confidently ordered an array of dishes, including the restaurant's famed sashimi. While sushi, teppanyaki, and tempura were served as individual portions, the sashimi arrived as a grand platter. Despite the dish's reputation, Lu Jiaxin struggled to partake, her apprehension about consuming raw fish, potentially harboring parasites, proving insurmountable.
Noticing her reluctance, Su Heyuan inquired, "Why aren't you eating? This restaurant is famous for its sashimi, and it's all tuna—incredibly sweet and tender."
Lu Jiaxin shook her head. "You enjoy it. I'll stick to the other dishes."
Indeed, the sushi, teppanyaki, and tempura delighted their palates, as expected of a restaurant of such repute. Lu Jiaxin knew that culinary excellence was the cornerstone of any successful restaurant, across all eras. No amount of marketing could compensate for a lack of flavor.
Su Heyuan asked, "You've been back for several days now. What have you been busy with?"
"I purchased a burial plot," Lu Jiaxin replied. "I plan to relocate my mother's and grandmother's graves there once the weather warms up. That way, I won't have to travel back to the mainland for Qingming and Zhongyuan festivals."
"Your mother's grave is fine, but do you think the Ding family will agree to relocating your grandmother's?"
"I intend to donate one million yuan to the local government, on the condition that they facilitate the relocation of my grandmother's grave," Lu Jiaxin explained. "If the Ding family obstructs the process, I'll withdraw the donation."
Su Heyuan couldn't help but chuckle at her tactic. "That's a bold move. You're really giving the Ding family a hard time."
It was evident that Lu Jiaxin held a grudge against the Ding family, opting to channel her funds towards the government rather than let the Dings benefit in any way. Faced with such an ultimatum, the Ding family was left with no recourse, as going against the government was unthinkable in mainland China.
Lu Jiaxin's cold huff conveyed her unyielding stance. "The sooner they drop dead, the better. That way, they can apologize to my grandmother and mother in the afterlife."
Su Heyuan smiled. "If you encounter any problems, just let me know. I have plenty of connections on the mainland—influential people who can lend a hand."
"Will do. I won't hesitate to call on you if the need arises."
Su Heyuan shifted the conversation to the topic of patent incentive schemes. "What sparked your sudden interest in this matter? Have you heard something?"
Lu Jiaxin replied, "These days, intellectual property rights are taken very seriously. The mainland lags in this regard, despite legislation. Those islanders have no scruples, and I worry they might steal our formulas and register them as their own."
To illustrate her point, she added, "Take the example of Liuwei Dihuang Wan. They obtained the formula and applied for an international patent."
Su Heyuan was stunned for a moment, and then he slapped the table and said, "That's definitely not going to work. I'll have a good talk with my uncle about this when I go back in a few days."
"How much are you donating, Jiaxin?"
"One hundred thousand green dollars every year for ten years," Lu Jiaxin replied. By that time, everyone should be aware of the importance of patents, and even without incentives, they would understand the necessity of registering their intellectual property.
Su Heyuan exclaimed, "That's already a substantial amount! Well, I'll match your donation then—I'll also give one hundred thousand green dollars annually for the next ten years."
Lu Jiaxin believed that if everyone could recognize the value of patents, the unfair situations that had occurred in her previous life could be avoided.
Thinking about the amount of money Lu Jiaxin was donating, Su Heyuan couldn't help but marvel, "That's twenty million! You're really generous. If it were me, I'd probably only donate a fraction of that."
"That money is from my aunt. It's not like I can't make more. I'd rather use it to help improve the lives and living conditions of those children."
Su Heyuan said admiringly, "Well, now that it's yours, it's yours to give. I admire your generosity; I know I wouldn't be able to part with twenty million so easily."
"It's all right. You have to give to receive. I believe I'll earn another twenty million in the future."
Su Heyuan agreed, "I'm sure you will."
"Didn't you say you wanted to acquire a property company? I know of one called Longyu Property. The owner's cousin is a friend of mine. During our drinking session before the New Year, he mentioned that his brother-in-law's family intends to immigrate and is looking to sell the company."
"Many people in Hong Kong City are pessimistic about the future and plan to sell their properties or companies and immigrate to Australia or other Western countries."
As he spoke, a hint of worry crept into his tone.
Lu Jiaxin said, "The immigration requirements are quite stringent. Out of the millions of people in Hong Kong City, only a small fraction will actually be able to immigrate."
"It's fine if it's just the average citizen, but what if large enterprises also decide to relocate overseas?"
Lu Jiaxin reassured him, "Only British-owned enterprises will be selling off their properties and moving their companies abroad, and even then, there are political reasons behind some of those decisions. But the big tycoons of Hong Kong City have their roots here; they won't be relocating their companies overseas."
If they uprooted their foundations, their companies would be at risk.
Hearing her confident tone, Su Heyuan felt his anxiety ease considerably. "You should tell my uncle what you just said. It would put his mind at ease."
Lu Jiaxin smiled. "Don't you think he's already asked me about it? My words just didn't carry much weight."
She could understand Xie Kaixiao's and the other leaders' concerns. At present, many members of Hong Kong City's middle class were selling their properties and applying to immigrate to foreign countries. The leaders worried that the outflow of capital would impact the city's economic development and also feared that it might cause panic and unrest.
Su Heyuan steered the conversation back to the previous topic. "Jiaxin, I've also had someone look into Longyu Property. They made an 8.6% profit last year. Many property companies are operating at a loss, so just breaking even is considered good. An 8.6% profit is quite impressive."
Lu Jiaxin agreed that it was a good find. A company with such profits must have quite a few prime properties. "I'll have someone make some inquiries first. If it checks out, we can negotiate with them."
Su Heyuan smiled. "If you're satisfied after making your inquiries, I'll ask my friend to help facilitate the deal. If the owner really intends to immigrate, we should be able to seal the deal."
