When Hermione began to move, Liam closely followed her. From his observations, Hermione's first choice was to head to the basement to rescue the hostage. This wasn't the optimal option and could easily put her in danger. However, this approach was very much in line with Hermione's habit of prioritizing helping others.
Upon entering the basement, Hermione finally saw through the iron bars what was happening inside the cells. She had only heard a rough description from Liam and had mentally prepared herself, but now, seeing it firsthand, she realized that the evil described by Liam was only a fraction of the reality.
When she saw a certain Customercosdr. Hannibal, the extreme evil that radiated from his elegant demeanor made Hermione feel as if a string in her mind had snapped.
Liam noticed Hermione's magic power surge sharply, and a blood-red and black mist visibly condensed around her, enveloping her in a hazy silhouette.
"As long as her soul is fine", Liam, using his Magic Eye, saw that Hermione's soul was unharmed. He withdrew his hand, which had been about to reach out to support her, and continued to follow behind her.
The commotion was noticed both by the surveillance room and the basement, but the people there were helpless against the situation. They fired wildly at the strange entity, but all the bullets vanished upon contact with the mist. As Hermione advanced step by step, the killers in the adjacent rooms fell silently, their brains hemorrhaging instantly.
What reassured Liam was that Hermione did not kill the security guards who were firing at her. Instead, she used Shadow Magic to make their shadows disarm and bind them. This indicated that Hermione was still in control and hadn't completely lost her mind.
The surveillance room above saw everything that was happening in the basement and shut down the elevator, attempting to trap the strange entity underground. Unfortunately, this was entirely ineffective. After clearing the basement, Hermione and Liam easily ascended back to the ground floor via the elevator shaft.
The process was repeated. Due to the Ghost Wall surrounding the area, everyone was like lambs awaiting slaughter, either being bound or eliminated one by one.
After half an hour, when the last security guard hiding in the attic was bound by his own shadow, the battle, if it could be called that, was over. During this encounter, Liam learned through practical experience that Muggles, using only light weapons, could not harm a Wizard at all.
For example, at least a hundred bullets hit the two of them, and a few grenades exploded nearby. However, neither the grenade shrapnel nor the bullets managed to penetrate their Iron Armor. In fact, such kinetic energy-based weapons were rendered ineffective by magical defenses.
Based on previous experience with technological weapons, Liam believed that only certain high-energy weapons could inflict significant damage on Wizards, such as a nuclear explosion at close range or large-scale laser weapons. By depleting the magical energy Wizards used for defense, these weapons could then harm them.
In summary, magic provided a significant advantage in defending against Muggle weapons that relied on kinetic energy to cause damage. The idea that a gun could easily defeat a Wizard was a gross oversimplification of the power of magic and Wizards.
Liam and Hermione began to use Blood Magic to check if the security guards had any blood on their hands. If they had, Liam and his companions would naturally send them to God to repent. The problem was with the majority who had not taken a life.
"They are indeed guilty, but their sins do not warrant the death penalty. I believe we should spare their lives", Hermione said to Liam after dealing with the last security guard who had taken a life. By this point, her emotions had calmed, and the red and black mist that had enveloped her had dissipated. However, she looked pale and somewhat drained.
"You are indeed a merciful person", Liam said softly.
"You're not just trying to cheer me up because I'm in a bad mood, right? I’ve killed over fifty people today, and you’re telling me I’m merciful?" Hermione looked at Liam with confusion.
"Of course, you are merciful." Liam handed Hermione a small bottle of Gold Wine from Qingting Island. This wine tasted like sweet champagne and had a low alcohol content, making it suitable for someone like Hermione who didn’t drink much.
After Hermione took the bottle and drank a few gulps, her cheeks turned slightly red. Liam continued, "You have the strength but aren’t cruel or bloodthirsty. You value life. That’s true mercy. This is why I always said Professor Moody was a merciful elder. Although he can be rough, he chooses not to kill when he could. That’s true mercy. Think about it, how many people have you saved? If you had let these criminals go, how many more lives would they have destroyed?"
"Thank you, you’ve made me feel a lot better. Taking someone’s life isn’t easy, but to save lives, some must get their hands dirty. Since I chose this path, I’ll have to keep walking it." Hermione put down the empty bottle. She had drunk the entire 350ml bottle of golden wine in one go, but fortunately, the alcohol content was low, and she still seemed quite clear-headed. "By the way, what about the rest of them?"
"They’re like the guards at Auschwitz. Even if they didn’t kill with their own hands, they are still evil. But don’t worry, I’ll take care of them." Liam walked over to the group of security guards huddled together.
Using Eagle Vision to see their karmic ties, Liam used Life Magic combined with Maoshan Daoist techniques to transfer the mental imprints of the victims into their souls. This way, whenever they closed their eyes, they would see the people they had indirectly harmed. The duration of these nightmares varied based on the severity of their crimes, ranging from over a year to a lifetime. In this world without magic, no one could remove the curse from them.
After dealing with the killing factory, they performed a Life Magic ritual to calm the spirits and released all the hostages. The two of them then rushed to the mastermind’s villa. Unfortunately, they arrived too late; the leader had already fled, leaving behind a group of security personnel to set an ambush.
"What do we do now?" Hermione was more determined to pursue the leader after finding a pile of heads hidden in the villa. She asked Liam after discovering the leader's escape.
"Simple, we have enough time to hunt down every member of this evil organization. It will just take some time", Liam replied with a smile.
Two months later, they had cleared out over two hundred members of the organization spread across the globe. During this process, they encountered numerous challenges and crises but overcame them all. Hermione grew rapidly under Liam’s guidance and through practical experience.
Finally, they cornered the organization’s leader in an abandoned underground military warehouse in the Ural Mountains. The leader, under immense pressure, appeared almost insane.
"You, you can’t kill me. I just got lucky in this business, but the evil behind it will never disappear. Someone else will take over eventually. Uh—"
Before he could finish, Hermione waved her hand, sending him to confess to God.
"You’re right. But for me, it’s enough to eliminate the evil I see. I’m not a Chosen One, and I won’t overestimate myself by taking on the responsibility of saving the world. I’ll do my best with what I can, like cleansing you and your organization. I’m glad to have saved many lives and protected them from deadly threats. That’s enough for me. As for the evil returning, that’s another story. If it happens, I’ll just do it again."
