Chapter 355: Rune Card
Chapter 355: Rune Card
Felix was eating breakfast in the Great Hall, flipping through the day's newspaper. Rita Skeeter had written a scathing and biased commentary on the trouble Alastor Moody had caused the day before, along with a mocking reference to Mr. Weasley.
In the article, Moody was described as a "troublesome figure who can't distinguish between a simple handshake and a deliberate murder", while Mr. Weasley was mistakenly called "Arnold Weasley", and the article brought up the incident two years ago with the flying car.
Felix reread the article. This woman was very skilled at reporting only the facts she needed, then twisting them to reach a ridiculous conclusion.
However, some useful information could still be gleaned, such as the mention of a female official who had been missing for months, likely referring to Bertha Jorkins.
...
Felix entered the Ancient Runes classroom ten minutes early, where a few students were already scattered in their seats.
"Hi, Felix", Luna looked up from her magazine, greeting him cheerfully as if they had run into each other somewhere else, like in the Forbidden Forest.
Felix smiled, "Hi, Luna. Are you in third year too?"
"Yes", she paused for a moment, and Ginny, who was already used to her behavior, pulled the magazine closer to her. They had been playing a quiz game from the magazine, and there were prizes for correct answers.
Luna, with her misty eyes, suddenly said to Felix, "By the way, I really liked your Christmas gift. Have I told you that?"
"Oh, uh, yes, I remember you mentioning it... about nine months ago", Felix was momentarily caught off guard by the question.
Two rows away, a boy with gray hair suddenly raised his hand, looking expectantly at Felix.
"Hello?"
Felix was a bit surprised. He pulled out a long piece of parchment and carefully examined the red emblem on the boy's robes before looking down to find the name of a Gryffindor student.
"H-H-Professor Flitwick, my name is Colin. Harry Potter recommended me to take this class, and I really love Magical Puppets!" he said, his arm still raised high.
Felix scanned the names on the parchment and nodded at him, "Mr. Creevey, the class hasn't started yet. We're just chatting."
"Will we get to have Magical Puppets today? Can I pick one for myself?" Colin asked excitedly.
"Of course. I'll also give all of you access to the Ancient Runes class section on the Answering Parchment. Many of your assignments for this school year will be completed there", Felix said.
More students started to fill the classroom.
Luna and Ginny held The Quibbler, trying to solve a puzzle. Luna lifted the page with the puzzle and held it up to the light to see the shadow. "I think it's a paper hat."
"I don't see anything", Ginny said. "By the way, why do you call the professor by his name?"
"Because we're friends", Luna said cheerfully, taking out a quill and sketching the shape of the hat she imagined.
Ginny was still pondering the riddle: "Something is empty inside but is the companion of wisdom; it is not seen when used, and it is not needed when seen." She shook her fiery red hair, realizing the answer, "Of course, what else could it be?"
She snatched Luna's quill and wrote "hat" in the blank space. The page of the magazine floated off and folded itself into a hat, which Ginny placed on Luna's messy head.
"Alright", Felix stood at the podium, looking at the classroom filled with students. "Welcome, everyone! I'm glad to see that the number of students enrolled in Ancient Runes has increased this year."
After taking attendance, he scanned the young wizards, who were eagerly looking at him.
"Since it's the start of the term, and your minds are still clear, let's discuss some thought-provoking topics", Felix began, his voice calmer than before. The students quickly settled into their seats.
"Of course, I hope you all excel in this class, but first, I need to clarify something—
The knowledge in the textbook is just the minimum requirement I have for you. If you want to stand out or achieve something in this field—whether it's becoming a pure scholar, or integrating Runes and Alchemy to recreate ancient magical artifacts; or following the footsteps of ancient wizards to experience the powerful and raw Ancient Magic as it forms and is released from your hands—these are the things I can teach you, provided you meet my standards.
Given the increasing variety of teaching aids in this class, the learning difficulty has been decreasing, and I will accordingly raise my expectations for you. The benefits are obvious—you will gain more than previous years' students, and this time, I will guide you to explore more interesting and mysterious fields."
He raised his hand, and dozens of cards flew out from his robe, landing accurately in front of each young wizard.
"Rune Cards", Felix said briefly. "I compared rune engraving knives and Rune Cards, but I ultimately decided that Rune Cards are more suitable for absolute beginners."
"Rune engraving knives, on the other hand, are used for engraving rune circuits, and you are far from that step."
The young wizards listened attentively, momentarily bewildered by these unfamiliar concepts, but Felix did not intend to elaborate in detail. He simply made a clear distinction and moved the class forward to the next step.
He held the card in reverse, showing the front to the students. As he infused magic into the card, the original markings gradually lit up. He explained, "The reason it is suitable for beginners is that it only requires you to infuse stable magic. With two years of magical practice, this step is not an insurmountable obstacle for you."
By the time he finished speaking, the patterns on the card were fully illuminated, projecting a spherical light the size of an egg, composed of countless tiny light points. It glowed faintly, and from a distance, it looked like a bright, fluffy ball.
"This is the Rune of Light. For now, you just need to know that it looks like a glowing, small, fluffy ball."
"The corresponding Rune Symbol is the pattern on the card, which looks a bit like a torch. The real symbol looks like this—"
An invisible hand appeared in the air, sketching a golden symbol. The young wizards compared the symbol with the pattern on the card, and it was indeed identical.
Felix smiled and grabbed the golden Rune, "In future classes, you will understand the meaning of this Rune. Then, you can transform it into the image you see in the projection, which is its magical symbol. Like this—"
He opened his palm to show the students. The golden Rune transformed into a glowing, small light ball, and then, Felix released it, letting it become a bright white light.
"Alright, let's start the practice."
Felix announced. The young wizards held their cards, frowning as they tried to infuse magic into them. Before long, Felix saw their faces turn red, their mouths tightly closed, looking as serious as if they were about to engage in a life-or-death duel.
He moved between the students, reminding them, "Think about how you transformed the goblet in Transfiguration Class. Let the magic flow evenly and steadily... Learn to relax; forcing it will only make your magic inconsistent. This is just a game..."
Under the power of his words, the young wizards calmed down, and their progress began to accelerate.
Felix muttered to himself, "I'm glad I didn't use the Weasley Twins' prank cards, or the classroom would be full of rats."
Unexpectedly, yet reasonably, Luna was the first to succeed. Perhaps she was the only one in the class who truly saw this as a game. "Look, it's just like a Puffskein", she said.
It was rare for Felix to hear her mention a creature he knew.
Puffskeins are very popular wizarding children's pets. They are spherical in shape, covered in creamy yellow soft fur, and indeed resemble the light ball projected by the Rune Card. Moreover, the key point is that these creatures are not fictional; they truly exist.
"Ten points to Ravenclaw. Additionally", Felix showed her a stack of cards, "pick another one, Miss Lovegood."
Luna's eyes widened with interest. "Is there a Rune that represents Nargles?"
"…No."
"What about Dirigible Plums?"
"Also no."
Felix handed her a Rune Card representing frost, thinking they both needed to cool down a bit.
