Chapter 351: Night Raid (Part 2)
Chapter 351: Night Raid (Part 2)
"Hmm."
After a simple response, Leonard examined his secretary with a hint of suspicion. "What took you so long? It was just a simple order."
The secretary, Mark, hesitated, "The person on duty fell asleep, and no matter how I tried to wake them, they wouldn't budge. It took a bit longer, and on the way back, I was startled by a stray cat. Apologies..."
Mark's steps were heavy as he returned to his desk and resumed reviewing the unfinished documents.
Leonard, having sat back down, glanced at the pale sky and suddenly felt a wave of fatigue. He yawned and waved his hand wearily.
"Forget it, let's call it a day. I need to rest. Tomorrow afternoon, we have to meet with the president of the Capital City Chamber of Commerce to discuss the additional monopoly tax on Char Department Store and the other major companies. You should also take a break in the ear room; don't be late tomorrow!"
"Yes, sir."
Upon hearing Leonard's words, the secretary promptly stood up and followed closely behind him as they left the office and entered the dimly lit corridor.
As they walked down the corridor, their shadows elongated under the light behind them. Mark's steps quickened, and his shadow gradually covered Leonard's head, almost enveloping him entirely.
"By the way, how is the woman at Treasure Flower Estate?" Leonard asked, seemingly uncomfortable with the secretary's unusual silence.
"Is she still living in the garden?"
"..."
At Leonard's question, Mark's shadow paused momentarily, then he nodded slightly, "Yes, she's still there, with your daughter, in a small cottage in the garden."
Your daughter...
"Shut up! Don't mention that monster! She's not my daughter!" Leonard's body stiffened at the mention, and he stopped in his tracks, turning with anger in his eyes.
"Damn it! I should've drowned that monster long ago! But you... Mark!!! How dare you bring her up in front of me?!"
"Apologies, Marquis! I'm sorry, I spoke out of turn!" Mark, startled by Leonard's sudden outburst, quickly slapped himself, snapping out of his confused state. "I... I might have been too tired... Marquis... I..."
"Enough, just shut your mouth!" Leonard glared at his secretary with disgust, thinking of finding an excuse to get rid of him tomorrow. "Considering you've been working late with me, and your mind isn't clear, I'll let it slide this time. But if I hear you mention her again, don't blame me!"
"I... I understand, Marquis, I won't forget!"
Humming in annoyance, Leonard continued, "Did she see us when we went to clean up the estate? Did she say anything?"
"She... probably saw us." Mark's eyes flickered as he replied.
"But she didn't say anything, nor did she try to stop us. She just picked up the Treasure Flower family emblem from the trash pile in front of the main mansion."
"I see..." Leonard scoffed slightly.
"After that incident, I actually saw her twice. The way that woman looked at me, it was as if she was looking at a dead man. It worried me for a long time."
"But now... Haha, it seems like the Purification Bureau has a stronger hold on her than I imagined. She doesn't even dare to stand up and stop them. The last of the Treasure Flower... that's all."
"Purification Bureau? What's that?"
"It's... a mysterious department under the Police Department."
Glancing back at the curious secretary behind him, Leonard felt a twinge of annoyance at his own loose tongue for mentioning this dangerous organization. But after a moment's thought, he explained with a hint of trepidation in his eyes:
"They have some unusual abilities and can do things ordinary people can't. They handle special cases, but the conditions for joining are extremely strict. Most people haven't even heard of them, and even if they do, they'll quickly forget.
I only know of their existence because that woman was chosen by them, and they placed a Spirit Art on me, allowing me to avoid her and retain these memories."
"There's actually such a mystical organization..."
The secretary officer, wide-eyed with awe, responded with a hint of concern:
"Lord Leonard, if the woman from the Treasure Flower Estate could join the Purification Bureau, she must have some extraordinary abilities as well, right?"
"Hmm..."
Turning back, Leonard glanced at his odd secretary and thought that even if he knew now, he would likely forget this memory by tomorrow. Plus, after holding it in for so long, he really wanted to find someone to confide in. So, Leonard answered:
"I'm not entirely sure, but I suspect her ability might be resurrection!"
"Resurrection?"
"Yes, resurrection! She might be able to desecrate the souls of the dead!"
Leonard nodded, continuing his steps forward while narrating with fear in his eyes:
"Back then, I clearly... um... you mentioned that monster child. She was definitely dead, but that crazy woman kept buying children's clothes.
When I realized something was wrong and thought she had gone mad, I sent someone to investigate. They actually saw a little girl in the garden! I even saw her with my telescope, and her eyebrows and eyes were exactly like... just like that monster child! Mark! Can you imagine how terrified I was?
Damn it! If it weren't for this rare opportunity and the orders from the Minister of Finance and the Queen, I would never have gone near that cursed estate!"
"Hmm, I think I can imagine it, and even if I can't now, I'll probably see it soon."
???
"What the hell are you babbling about?"
Hearing his secretary's strange response, Leonard turned around, his eyes filled with anger as he scolded:
"Damn it, Mark! What's wrong with you today? How... how did you end up here?!"
"I came to see you."
A crisp, cheerful voice replied:
"I wanted to see the person who drowned me. And..."
Little Ellie, who had replaced the dream Mark, stood before Leonard with a smile. In Leonard's horrified gaze, she asked innocently:
"Where's my body? Where did you leave my corpse? Can you tell me?"
"AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
