Chapter 35: Senior Brother Zhao and I Are Destined to Meet!
Two lifetimes ago, twenty years after Lv Yang’s current timeline, the Holy Sect would launch a devastating campaign against the righteous sect known as the Divine Martial Gate.
In that past life, Zhao Xuhe ultimately reached the peak of Refining Qi cultivation and, together with Fairy Feixia, became overseers of the Holy Sect’s external market near the Divine Martial Gate. This market, located at Skull Mountain, would serve as a covert supply hub for the Holy Sect’s impending war. It was there that the pair discovered a Foundation-Building-grade treasure.
As the war erupted, their exploits earned them great merit. They exchanged additional rewards for a second Foundation-Building treasure and enlisted an alchemist to fuse the two into a single Foundation-Building Pill—a rare chance to ascend. Though they ultimately failed, the opportunity had been real.
“If Zhao Xuhe could attempt Foundation-Building after mastering the Nine Metamorphosis Dragon Art, perhaps I can too,” Lv Yang mused. “This is worth any risk!”
Three days later, as Lv Yang meditated in his Cultivation Cave, a Huma-Owl soared to his entrance. Its beak parted, and a crisp, melodic voice rang out:
“Senior Brother Lv, please come to my Cultivation Cave.”
It was Fairy Feixia.
Lv Yang’s eyes flickered with understanding. He immediately summoned a sword beam, streaking toward her cave before being guided to a serene pavilion nestled among mountains and streams.
Inside, Fairy Feixia brewed tea with graceful precision—her delicate hands pouring spiritual water, her True Flame coaxing forth fragrance. The aroma that greeted Lv Yang was ethereal, sharpening his senses and invigorating his spiritual awareness.
“Please, sit,” she said, lifting her gaze. Once he settled, she spoke plainly: “The association has responded. Your request for a cultivation technique has been approved.”
Lv Yang feigned excitement. “Truly? May I choose one now?”
Fairy Feixia nodded, handing him a jade scroll. As he unfurled it, his eyes scanned the dense list of techniques. His heart clenched. These were the complete versions of the crippled techniques he’d seen in the Heaven-Mending Peak’s Scriptorium—far superior, yet hoarded by the Holy Sect. Without the Three Rivers Association’s backing, he’d never have accessed them.
Suddenly, his eyes locked onto a familiar title: Yin Corpse Liberation Transformation Art.
“A supreme technique,” he murmured. “Its first stage alone, Heavenly Demon Blood Transformation Ray, pales in comparison to the full form. Master it, and one becomes impervious to the Five Elements, immune to blades—a Corpse Liberation Immortal.”
He chose it without hesitation.
After copying the technique, he turned to Fairy Feixia. “Is there more you require of me?”
She smiled. “I’m applying to oversee the Skull Mountain market. I’ll need reliable companions.”
Lv Yang nodded. “I’d be honored to accompany you.”
Her approval deepened. “You understand—within the Holy Sect, stagnation means oblivion. Only by seizing external opportunities can we hope to ascend.”
Of course, Lv Yang thought. With my Ten Thousand Lives Scroll, death is just a detour.
Ten days later, aboard the flying vessel to Skull Mountain, Lv Yang landed gracefully on the deck. He greeted Fairy Feixia before blending into the crowd.
Among the passengers were two Refining Qi Seventh-Stage cultivators, including Lu Yuanchun from Heaven-Mending Peak.
Zhao Xuhe must be here too, Lv Yang mused. This lifetime’s Foundation-Building chance hinges on him.
In a shadowed corner, he found Zhao Xuhe nursing a flask of spirit wine. The man’s decline was starker than ever—his soul-stealing puppet ruined, his lover Qingchen gone, his spirit broken.
“Senior Brother Zhao!” Lv Yang approached, feigning delight. “What a fate that we meet again!”
Zhao Xuhe squinted, struggling to recognize him. “Lv… Senior Junior Brother? You’ve reached Mid-Stage Refining Qi?”
Lv Yang smiled. “I’ve never forgotten your kindness, Senior Brother.”
Zhao Xuhe scoffed. “You’ve come to mock me?”
“Why would I?” Lv Yang replied, feigning innocence. “I’m here to help.” He pressed a spirit pill into Zhao Xuhe’s hand. “A humble gift to aid your cultivation.”
Zhao Xuhe hesitated, then felt an inexplicable warmth. “Why… help me?”
“Perhaps,” Lv Yang said softly, “we were always meant to cross paths.”
