Chapter 349: Brock: So You Have Such Ambitions!
Chapter 349: Brock: So You Have Such Ambitions!
When Ivan opened the door, he couldn't help but pause for a moment. Brock was sitting in the corner, eating a few pieces of crisp cookies. His complexion was much better than before; at least he didn't look as emaciated and skeletal.
Brock, of course, noticed someone entering the room but didn't pay attention, continuing to eat his cookies. After finishing, he looked up at Ivan and said casually, "Looks like I'm about to die. Are you here to kill me this time?"
Ivan was surprised by Brock's attitude. Just a few days ago, he had been on the verge of death, fiercely resisting. Now, he seemed rather nonchalant.
"No, I just came to ask you some questions!"
Despite his surprise, Ivan didn't dwell on Brock's unusual behavior. He sat down and took out a few Alchemy books, placing them in front of him.
"Do you think I'll tell you?" Brock understood Ivan's intentions and burst out laughing, though it was a bitter laugh.
Although he had come to terms with many things over the past few days and stopped deliberately starving himself, he wasn't about to help Ivan, the person who had caused him to lose everything!
Ivan didn't respond. He took out a bottle of Veritaserum.
Brock's mocking smile froze, and his face turned grim. He knew Ivan was threatening him.
If he answered truthfully, he could still decide what to say and what not to say. But if he drank the Veritaserum, he would have no control over anything.
After a long silence, Brock finally relented, saying helplessly, "What do you want to ask?"
"I found an interesting technique in this book, about setting hidden doors in magical items." Ivan took out one of the books and flipped to page thirty-seven.
Brock glanced at the title of the book:
*The Secrets of Alchemy—Seventy Techniques You Never Knew for Sabotage*
Brock immediately understood. This was one of the books he had read most frequently in his early years, and he knew the content by heart.
"I followed the instructions in the book and ran into some problems when I tried to modify a protective item to make it ineffective against a specific type of magic. I failed multiple times during the process."
Ivan continued to explain the issues he had encountered while researching and experimenting.
After nearly getting caught by Lockhart, Ivan had the idea to set hidden doors in the magical items he created, to prevent them from being used against him in the future.
Unfortunately, Aisha didn't know much about this area, so the idea had been on hold. It wasn't until he found related books in the Borgin and Burkes library that he revisited this idea.
Brock listened to Ivan's questions, hesitated for a moment, and then decided that the problem wasn't too difficult. Even if he didn't say anything, Ivan would eventually figure it out. So, he spoke up.
"Your idea and approach are too extreme. Making a protective item vulnerable to a specific type of magic is very difficult, even for me.
So, you should consider a different approach. Make the item sense a specific magical signature and automatically break or even explode, killing the user!"
Ivan's eyes lit up. Brock was indeed a master of sabotage. This idea was much more clever and simpler to implement than his previous thoughts.
Soon, Ivan began discussing the specific plans for modifying Protective Artifacts with Brock.
At first, Brock only passively answered Ivan's questions, but as Ivan kept coming up with one devious idea after another, Brock couldn't help but get excited and started to talk more.
As they chatted, Ivan suddenly thought of a question and asked, "By the way, Mr. Borgin, has anyone ever discovered the Backdoor you set up?"
"Of course not!" Brock sneered, if it were that easy to find, he wouldn't have lasted this long.
Of course, he wouldn't do this with every magic item he sold; it was too much work, and if he encountered someone knowledgeable, it could lead to problems.
"Who do you plan to sell this to?" Brock hesitated for a moment, then asked out of curiosity.
"If I plan to sell it to the Ministry of Magic, what are the chances they will discover it?" Ivan hesitated but didn't hide his intentions. Brock's life was in his hands, so there was no risk of information leakage.
And he wanted to know something that Brock might be familiar with, so asking him was the fastest way.
Don't think the Ministry of Magic is an official institution in the Wizarding World; in Ivan's eyes, it still needs to be guarded against.
He remembered that in the original timeline, during the Second Wizard War, the Ministry of Magic was even once controlled by Voldemort, with the Minister becoming a puppet and turning to hunt down Harry and his friends.
Although the plot has changed and Voldemort might not have the chance to resurrect, the threat from the Ministry of Magic hasn't disappeared, and it's still necessary to prepare in advance.
As soon as Ivan spoke, Brock seemed to realize something and his pupils constricted. He immediately asked, "You plan to leave a Backdoor on the Protective Artifacts you sell to the Ministry of Magic?"
"Yes!" Ivan nodded.
Brock looked at the young Wizard in front of him, and a chill ran down his spine.
Because of the planned attack, he had carefully studied Aisha's movements, so he knew about their cooperation with the Ministry of Magic last year.
He also knew that the Ministry of Magic had purchased many Protective Artifacts from Aisha for the Aurors to use, which made their clean-up operations last year go exceptionally smoothly.
At the time, Brock had been puzzled about why Aisha suddenly started cooperating with the Ministry of Magic, and even offered repair services for damaged Protective Artifacts.
Now it looked like they were playing a bigger game!
They had been plotting against the Ministry of Magic from the very beginning!
Brock couldn't help but wonder what would happen when those Aurors who bought Protective Rings from them faced them in battle.
Just thinking about it made Brock shiver.
However, as a long-time rival, he understood Aisha. That woman wouldn't have the ambition to control the Wizarding World, otherwise, she wouldn't have stayed quietly in Knockturn Alley for over a decade.
So it could only be that
Brock's cloudy eyes looked at Ivan, and he drew in a sharp breath. He couldn't believe that Ivan had planned to scheme against the Ministry of Magic last year and had the audacity to set up such a trap!
How old was he back then?
But Brock quickly remembered that the young Wizard in front of him couldn't be judged by normal standards. His words, actions, and abilities far exceeded those of his peers.
The extraordinarily powerful explosive magic and the unique White Patronus were particularly memorable.
"Remarkable! I don't regret losing." Brock sighed with a bitter smile, thinking about how he had been obsessed with the petty gains in Knockturn Alley, while the other party probably didn't even consider him a threat.
