Chapter 348: Muggle Creations
Chapter 348: Muggle Creations
"What... is this?"
Hagrid squinted, trying to discern the tiny object that seemed too delicate for him.
Dumbledore cautiously avoided direct contact, instead extending his finger above the metal syringe and slowly lifting it, causing the syringe to be extracted bit by bit.
The silvery-gray metal was sharp, emitting a cold, gleaming light.
"This... seems like a Muggle thing?" Hagrid prodded it with his fingernail, speaking with confusion.
"Recently, some healers at St. Mungo's have also started to introduce Muggle medical equipment," Dumbledore explained, narrowing his eyes slightly as he examined it for a while before continuing, "But... Muggles are indeed more accustomed to using these things."
Dumbledore waved his wand, and a silver phoenix emerged from the tip, disappearing in a flash.
Not long after, Professor Credence Bubba and Madame Pomfrey hurriedly arrived, both wearing thick cloaks over their nightgowns, and Madame Pomfrey's hair was loose.
They entered the Leaky Cauldron, where the werewolf was placed in a guest room upstairs. The dim oil lamp illuminated only a small area, and the room's hygiene was terrible, with items appearing greasy.
Hagrid stood by the bed, covering his wounds. Meanwhile, Dumbledore stood by the window, gazing outside, seemingly lost in thought.
"Dumbledore, Hagrid, we—"
Professor Bubba's greeting was cut short as she turned and saw the furry figure behind Hagrid.
The werewolf had awakened from his stupor, growling and baring his teeth, but he was tightly bound by several chains.
"Ah—"
The Muggle Studies Professor let out a shriek, almost turning to flee.
"Calm down, Credence," Dumbledore said, supporting Professor Bubba. "He can't harm anyone now. I called you here to show you this—Poppy, please help Hagrid with his wounds first."
"Okay."
Madame Pomfrey spoke calmly.
The Phoenix Guardian had already informed her of what to bring, and Madame Pomfrey was well-prepared.
She placed her seemingly small medicine box, which appeared to be only the size of two bricks, on the ground, and with a 'click-clack,' it unfolded, transforming into a five-layer high and two-meter-wide rack in an instant.
Hagrid's wounds were still bleeding, and he removed his jacket, revealing the terrifying injuries, causing Professor Bubba to let out another soft cry.
She glanced fearfully at the werewolf on the bed, her heart pounding, but thankfully, the headmaster with the white beard provided Professor Bubba with a great sense of security.
She took a few deep breaths, carefully examining the slender syringe in her hand.
Madame Pomfrey, on the other hand, mixed silver powder and White Freshroot in the appropriate proportions, evenly applying them to Hagrid's wounds. At the same time, she asked seriously, "Were you bitten by him?"
"No, I was very careful about that," Hagrid assured her, shaking his head.
"Will I turn into a werewolf?" Hagrid asked worriedly.
Madame Pomfrey glanced at him, "Generally, no."
"Generally?" Hagrid's voice rose in fear.
"The necessary condition for becoming a werewolf is to be bitten by a transformed werewolf during a full moon. The real contagion of lycanthropy is the blood and saliva of a transformed werewolf," Madame Pomfrey explained objectively.
"That's a relief," Hagrid sighed in relief. "It's not a full moon tonight, and I wasn't bitten either."
Madame Pomfrey's furrowed brows remained tense, not relaxing.
"This is the problem—Hagrid."
"There has never been a case of a werewolf transforming outside of a full moon, and until we know the cause of this transformation, I cannot confirm whether or not he carries the lycanthropy virus in his claws."
"Additionally, if your wound comes into contact with his blood or saliva, there is a chance of infection. Being bitten is the most direct method, but it's not the only way. Do you understand?"
Hagrid's face grew paler and more worried as Madam Pomfrey spoke.
The big man looked at Madam Pomfrey pitifully, as if he was about to burst into tears.
But after a long silence, he said, "Madam, please take a look at him too. I hit him several times, and I think I may have broken seven or eight of his bones."
Knowing that Lupin was the werewolf, Hagrid had been holding back during the fight, allowing him to escape multiple times. But in the critical moment, he knew he had struck hard, even hearing the sound of bones breaking.
Hagrid sat on the ground, sighing and worrying about both the possibility of becoming a werewolf himself and the fact that he might have crippled Lupin.
Madam Pomfrey glanced at him gently and then went to treat the werewolf on the bed.
"Ow—"
The werewolf howled, baring its teeth.
Madam Pomfrey took out a potion and poured it into the werewolf's long mouth. In less than a second, the werewolf fell back into a deep sleep.
The school nurse, dressed in a white robe, waved her wand, and a faint green light fell upon the werewolf, examining his injuries.
On the other side of the room, Professor Babaji used magic to magnify the syringe and observed it for a while before saying, "This is indeed a Muggle medical device, and it's unrelated to the equipment St. Mungo's imports."
"Unrelated?" Dumbledore asked.
"Yes," Professor Babaji replied, a hint of tension in her voice. "This syringe is too thick. The ones at St. Mungo's are much thinner, and even then, most people wouldn't want to be pricked by them..."
"And look, the tip of the needle has three small holes. I've never seen this design before. It's very intricate from a craftsmanship perspective, but it's unnecessary..."
"If it were necessary, what do you think these small holes would be for?" Dumbledore asked.
"Er..." Professor Babaji hesitated, then after a moment of thought, she said, "To inject the liquid faster? I suppose that's the reason."
Dumbledore nodded slightly, not saying anything. He waved his wand in a circle, collecting the residual substance, mixed with blood, from the inside and outside of the syringe, and gathered it into a small drop.
The red liquid droplet looked like blood, and Professor Babaji watched as Dumbledore placed it into a crystal vial. As she watched, she suddenly shivered.
There was an eerie sense of evil emanating from that droplet.
"Thank you for your help, Credence," Dumbledore said.
"I didn't do much..." Professor Credence Bubba said, a bit embarrassed. "I'm happy to help you."
Dumbledore smiled and said, "Thank you for coming in the middle of the night. The Phoenix will take you back."
A flash of red light appeared, and the Phoenix was already in the dimly lit room.
Professor Babaji looked at the Phoenix with envy and waved her hands hurriedly, saying, "No... It's not necessary. I can walk back, it's just a short distance."
"It's not a peaceful night. Let the Phoenix take you back," Dumbledore said.
His firm attitude made Professor Babaji sense something, and she swallowed nervously, saying, "Okay..."
