Chapter 348: Deed and Alchemical Knowledge
Chapter 348: Deed and Alchemical Knowledge
The passage was only about one meter wide and two meters high, pitch black and impossible to see anything inside, just as Brock had said, it was likely enchanted with a Light-Repelling Charm.
At this moment, Ivan took out a withered, rough human hand from the pocket of his Wizard's robe, along with a candle which he lit and placed in the palm of the withered hand.
The dim candlelight faintly illuminated the path ahead.
After completing this, Ivan couldn't help but feel as if he was performing some sort of evil ritual, and he couldn't help but inwardly complain.
Although the magical item was called the Hand of Glory, its usage, appearance, and method of creation were anything but glorious.
According to rumors, the Hand of Glory was made by cutting off the hand of a person who had been hanged, wrapping it in Mandrake or other herbs, and then soaking it. Its purpose was to allow only the person holding it to see the light, making it clear that those who used it were likely thieves or bandits.
Having made the preparations, Ivan didn't immediately enter. Instead, he waved his Wand and used a Levitation Charm to make the Hand of Glory float slowly into the dim passage.
After waiting for a while, nothing happened. Ivan then used a Transfiguration Spell to create a few animals to test the area, and only after everything seemed safe did he step inside.
Although Brock had drunk Veritaserum in front of him and revealed many secrets and the dangers of entering the Library, this didn't mean that Ivan could completely relax.
What if Brock hadn't been affected by the Veritaserum and was deliberately telling the truth to mislead him, lying about the triggering conditions? That would be very dangerous for Ivan.
Out of caution, Ivan decided to be more careful!
Inside the dark passage, the candle's bright flame dimmed slightly, illuminating only a few meters around Ivan, with the rest shrouded in darkness.
After walking for some time, Ivan found himself in a larger space, surrounded by rows of black bookshelves.
Signs hung in front of the bookshelves, labeled with words like Ancient Texts, Dark Magic, Potions, and Alchemy.
The floor was covered with dark red bricks, which had strange patterns etched into them. Ivan suspected these were likely magical runes for detection or ignition.
As he thought, Ivan held the Hand of Glory and walked around the Library.
The Library, in terms of size and number of books, was far inferior to Hogwarts' Library, but every book stored here was a high-level tome. The further back he went, the fewer the books, but they appeared to be even more precious.
Some of the books, Ivan believed, might not even be found in the Restricted Section of Hogwarts' Library, likely unique knowledge passed down through generations.
Soon, Ivan reached the end of the Library. Just as he was about to turn back, he suddenly noticed a golden box on a desk.
Ivan carefully opened the box and found a parchment-like document inside. After a quick glance, he was quite surprised.
"This is, the deed to Borgin and Burkes Magic Shop?!"
Ivan hadn't expected to find such a thing in the Library.
After some thought, Ivan put the deed away. Although Dugdale had said that many people were after the magic shop, this document might prove useful in the future.
Next, Ivan took out a suitcase that had been charmed with an Extension Charm, preparing to pack and take the books with him.
But due to the vast amount of books in the Library, Ivan had to give up the idea of taking all of them. He chose to take the more valuable magic books from the last few bookshelves first.
The rest would be left here, waiting to be transported in batches later, to be stored in the basement of his family's magic shop.
After the few bookshelves were emptied, the candle on the Hand of Glory was almost burned out. Ivan didn't dare to stay any longer and ran all the way out of the secret room, just managing to escape before the candle burned out.
Pulling out the pendant that served as the key, Ivan watched the wall slowly close. He glanced at the Hand of Glory and couldn't help but marvel at how Borgin and Burkes truly lived up to its reputation as a magic shop with a history spanning hundreds of years.
The Library, which stored secret knowledge, was heavily protected and even had a specialized magical item for daily access. This kind of grand gesture was something that Aisha's magic shop couldn't compare to.
But that might not always be the case. Ivan thought that once he mastered these alchemical techniques, he might also try to fortify his family's magic shop so that it couldn't be easily breached, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Returning home with the books, Ivan briefly told Aisha about his findings and quickly immersed himself in his studies.
The large amount of new alchemical knowledge gradually increased his Alchemy proficiency, which had been stagnant.
*Ring, after a period of study, your Alchemy proficiency has improved. Current level 5 (2867/8000)*
A few days later, Ivan put down *Advanced Runes Arrangement* and rubbed his slightly swollen head.
Admittedly, the quality of the books in the Borgin and Burkes Magic Shop was very high. If he could fully understand them, Ivan felt that his Alchemy skills might even reach level 6.
In other words, the goal of creating the Philosopher's Stone and becoming the wealthiest and longest-lived person in the Wizarding World was not far off!
However, these profound books were extremely difficult to understand. With his current Alchemy level, although he could grasp them, the learning efficiency was far too slow for him!
It would take several years to thoroughly understand and skillfully use all these books. Moreover, his academic points were almost exhausted from his research on potion improvements a few months ago.
Back then, Ivan could learn Aisha's alchemical knowledge so quickly not only because of the academic points but also because Aisha was willing to teach him everything she knew, including her ten years of experience in making magical items.
Ivan shook his head and couldn't help but sigh. There was no such dedicated teacher to guide him now.
Wait, that's not entirely true.
Ivan suddenly remembered Brock, who was still being held captive. He should have the knowledge in this area. With Veritaserum, there was no need to worry about him refusing to answer questions; the only concern was whether he had starved to death.
He remembered that a few days ago, Brock had been very stubborn and seemed to be planning to starve himself to death.
Since he had been fully absorbed in his alchemical studies, Ivan hadn't checked on Brock's condition recently. He had only instructed Walker to deliver food every day, but he didn't know if Brock had eaten it.
With this in mind, Ivan took a few books and headed towards the room where Brock was being held.
