Chapter 341: Cardinal Lanchi Enjoys a Peaceful Life
Chapter 341: Cardinal Lanchi Enjoys a Peaceful Life
In the northern border region of the Protoss Empire, between the Imperial Northern Border Province and the Snowfield Province, lay the city of Dan Delun. It was nestled among two towering mountain ranges, on a brief plain covered in snow.
Most of the time, this independent city was shrouded in ice and snow, receiving less sunlight than other places, and like most cities in the northern border, its nights were longer than its days.
Due to the abundance of resources in the surrounding area, it was often a resting place for scholars, hunters, explorers, adventurers, and all sorts of travelers from the Snowfield Province.
In the center of the city, next to a small square, stood a three-story building constructed from dark timber and gray stone. Its roof was cone-shaped and covered in thick, white snow, like a silver-white cloak. Wooden wind chimes hung from the eaves, swaying gently in the wind and emitting a dry, crisp sound.
This building housed the best inn in town, and on the third floor was a spacious room.
Despite the howling wind and snow outside, the room was enveloped in soft, natural light and an air of tranquility.
Occasionally, the quiet was broken by the soft rustling of pages being turned on the round, tall wooden table.
Aside from this, the only other sound was the faint breathing of Sigrid, buried under the thick covers on the bed.
Her face was relaxed and carefree, her eyelashes fluttering slightly.
After an indeterminate amount of time, she finally opened her eyes slowly.
Due to the extreme cold of the northern border's winters, the interior decor of most buildings in these towns aimed to create a warm and cozy atmosphere, often featuring raw wood and earthy tones.
Sigrid soon noticed a familiar figure sitting not far away in a chair. With one hand holding a book, he resembled a venerable old headmaster, exuding elegance and grace.
In the dim light, he appeared especially tall and imposing. He was dressed in a traditional dark suit, his coat smooth and immaculate as always, and his lowered gaze revealed deep and insightful eyes that seemed to hold a blend of vicissitudes and enlightenment.
His left hand held the spine of the book firmly, and after a long while, he gently turned the pages with one hand. The sound of the turning pages seemed amplified in the wooden building.
It felt as if the entire world existed within those pages.
He slowly turned his head.
"Cat Boss has gone out to buy groceries."
Lanchi guessed that Sigrid's hazy gaze meant she was hungry, but lunch wasn't ready yet.
Although they could easily buy lunch from the shops in town, Cat Boss insisted on cooking their meals, claiming that outside food was unhealthy and that his cooking provided a more balanced diet.
Currently, with Sid still recovering from serious injuries, Cat Boss had overcome his fear of Sigrid and was taking care of her.
Even without Sigrid saying a word, Cat Boss understood that she was far tougher and more resilient than her laid-back demeanor suggested.
The wounds on her body weren't simply healing; they were constantly regenerating and breaking down, causing her unimaginable pain. Yet, she managed to remain calm and composed, a feat that was beyond the capabilities of ordinary humans.
"Sigh, without my strength, my body feels so heavy, and I can't seem to move under the weight of these blankets."
Sigrid snuggled deeper into the warm covers, her voice soft and mellow.
The last time she had slept, it had been the middle of the night, and now it was daytime.
She had slept for a full ten hours straight due to the cold weather, and whenever she slept, she became completely unconscious and unaware of her surroundings.
Every day, Saint and the little black cat made it a point to find a town to rest in, so she could rest peacefully.
While walking on the streets, one might not notice, but lying in a warm room and looking out at the falling snow, it seemed incredibly beautiful.
Soon, these fluffy snowflakes would blanket the entire town in white.
"If you're tired, go back to sleep. I'll call you when Cat Boss is done cooking."
The weather was not suitable for traveling. During the year-end and year-beginning months in the northern part of the Empire, more northern residents perished due to the harsh weather than to bandits or magical beasts.
"Mhm."
Snuggling deeper into the covers, Sigrid mumbled softly, her face half-hidden.
Saint's gentle voice was like a lullaby.
She closed her eyes but didn't seem to fall asleep immediately.
"Saint, can you use that big explosion of yours again?"
Sigrid knew that the little black cat was timid, so she asked this question when it wasn't around.
As they ventured further, they would likely be approaching the blockade set up by the Extinction Branch.
Even reaching the Snowfield Province would be challenging, let alone attempting to break through the northern blockade to reach the Box Mountain Province.
However, on the bright side, this guy was the governor of the Snowfield Province, and Cardinal Lanchi probably never imagined in his wildest dreams that the true identity of the Dominating Saint Son would be the governor of the Snowfield Province.
As long as they made it to the Snowfield Province, it would somewhat be Lanchi's home turf.
"It will take more than ten days to recover."
Lanchi nonchalantly took out the orange epic card and showed Sigrid the [Nuclear Fusion Wolf], which was still in the process of recovery.
Currently, the [Nuclear Fusion Wolf] was unusable, and each time it self-destructed, it would enter a month-long self-repair mode.
As for the unbound encapsulated purple rare cards it destroyed, they were reduced to ashes.
Even if it could be used again, there probably wasn't any uranium-235-like material like the [Abyssal Black Worm], and he didn't have much of any other fuel either.
"So, can you beat a sixth-rank now?"
Previously, Sigrid felt that with her by his side, the Saint Son's combat power was sufficient against fourth, fifth, or even sixth-ranks. But now that he had become her pillar of support, she realized that there was indeed a significant difference between the fourth, fifth, and sixth-ranks.
"I can handle a fifth-rank, but I can't beat a sixth-rank."
If they had that fifth-rank Sid, their combined efforts might be able to take down a regular sixth-rank.
However, against top-tier sixth-ranks like the Extinction Saint Daughter or the Extinction Saint Son, they stood no chance in a direct confrontation.
While the [Nuclear Fusion Wolf] was powerful, its cooldown period after self-destructing was simply too long.
And without the [Great Loving Poet] by their side, it didn't seem to make much of a difference whether she was around or not. In fact, things were much quieter without her.
It just went to show that the genuine Talia was nothing special, and the bootleg version created from her was even more useless.
Using the [Great Loving Poet] as fuel for the [Nuclear Fusion Wolf] in the future might be a good idea, killing two birds with one stone—a month of peace and quiet for her, and a powerful explosion.
But if he did that, perhaps she would never listen to him again.
"What will you do if the Extinction Saint Son finds us?"
Sigrid knew just how powerful the Dominating Saint Daughter she once was, and the Extinction Saint Son who defeated her was even stronger.
"Then, I can only pray for a miracle."
Lanchi sighed and closed the book in his hand.
Sigrid couldn't quite understand what Lanchi meant by "praying for a miracle."
But she somehow felt that when he prayed for a miracle, he didn't need the consent of the god he was praying to.
"I'll be curious to see who you end up praying to."
Her Saint Son had always been like this—unfazed when facing the Extinction Bishop and the man in the black robe, and now, surrounded by countless perils, he remained unshakable.
Even though following him gave her a sense of uncertainty about their fate, she surprisingly found it quite enjoyable.
All of these were plus points for him.
