Chapter 340: A Deal Between Adults
Chapter 340: A Deal Between Adults
Chris took a week off, but on the second day, he realized he didn't have much to do.
The requirements for learning Apparition were not overly difficult, and Kyle's unexpected learning speed meant that within just one afternoon, Chris had taught him everything he needed to know.
There was no need to mention the rest...
As Kyle gradually adapted to the discomfort of Apparition, Chris found that even his sole role as a "healer" was no longer necessary.
For two whole days, Kyle didn't split his body once, and correspondingly, the White Jasmine Perfume in his bottle didn't decrease at all.
If this continued, wouldn't the three Galleons be wasted?
Following the spirit of thrift and waste reduction, on the fifth day, Chris increased the difficulty for Kyle. He not only set the target location further away but also reduced the interval between each Apparition.
Sometimes Kyle didn't even have time to catch his breath before he had to Apparate again.
And Chris's reasoning was irrefutable.
"Apparition is a spell that requires a lot of practice, especially high-frequency repetitive practice. It will definitely make your efficiency twice the result with half the effort!"
Kyle felt that Chris was wrong, but it also seemed to make sense...
He had no choice but to disappear and reappear over and over again, and the frequency was getting faster and faster.
The hill of Stagford Village sounded like fireworks, with constant "pops" and "crackles."
On the fifth day...
On a small hill in the north, Luna was watering the hydrangeas outside the house and occasionally disappearing into the flower bushes...
"What are you looking for?" Mr. Lovegood asked.
"Jumping Snails!" Luna said, "I just saw them on the petals."
"Oh, then you should be more careful..."
"Pop!"
Mr. Lovegood's words were interrupted by a burst of firecracker-like explosions, shattering the warm scene between father and daughter.
Kyle suddenly appeared before the two of them.
This wasn't unusual, as it wasn't Kyle's first time here.
What was startling was that Kyle was missing half an arm, looking exhausted, and his clothes were tattered.
"Someone is chasing this child..." Mr. Lovegood thought instinctively.
In broad daylight, in Stagford Village, chasing a student who hasn't even graduated yet... How audacious! It's not like twelve years ago! But before he could draw his wand...
"Pop!"
Another explosion sounded, and Chris appeared.
He skillfully pressed the half-arm onto Kyle's wound and quickly applied a circle of White Jasmine Perfume on top.
"Chris, what are you two doing?" Mr. Lovegood asked, bewildered.
"Oh, Xenophilius, what are you doing at home..." Chris stammered, "No, I mean, aren't you taking Luna to Northumberland?"
"The Snoring Stump has already left," Luna said, looking up.
"Yes, we just got back an hour ago."
Mr. Lovegood nodded and then asked thoughtfully, "Are you teaching Kyle Apparition? I thought he was only fourteen this year..."
After the initial shock, he had mostly recovered.
The familiar booming sound from earlier and the arm that had been severed and reattached indicated a clear case of Splinching.
This could only be Apparition.
"Actually, we were just... um... well, yes, that's right. Can you keep it a secret for us, Xenophilius?"
Chris sighed and said softly, "I suddenly remembered that I hadn't prepared a gift for the Romanian Ministry of Magic. What do you think of a unique magazine?"
"Like... The Daily Prophet?"
"No, that's too formal." Chris shook his head, "I think The Quibbler is a good choice."
"Ahem..." Mr. Lovegood suddenly cleared his throat and turned to the side, "Luna, I think our garden must be hiding a group of fairies, and they're making me hallucinate."
Luna blinked, "Dad, fairies don't make people hallucinate."
"Perhaps one of them has undergone some changes..."
Taking advantage of their conversation, Chris quickly left the hill with Kyle.
Since they had already practiced for five hours and had just been discovered, Chris decided to end the day's training.
As the sky grew darker, Kyle returned home and exercised his newly reattached arm, asking, "Is it really okay to give the Romanians The Quibbler as a gift?"
This magazine was quite...well, let's just say it was ahead of its time. Because people couldn't understand it, they thought it was a nonsense magazine...its audience was mostly concentrated in the psychiatric ward of St. Mungo's.
Using this magazine as a gift...won't the Romanian Ministry of Magic think it's a provocation?
"It's fine," Chris said with a wave of his hand. "Most of them won't understand it anyway, and some of the views in the magazine might be interesting to people from other countries."
By the sixth day, Kyle's arm had fully recovered, but his Apparition practice had to be terminated.
Mainly because Diana had returned and happened to witness their entire training process.
Diana made an excuse to go to Diagon Alley to buy something, smiling as she walked away with Chris's arm in hers.
And then...there was no then.
Anyway, she returned alone and told Kyle that Chris had decided to stay at the Ministry for a while due to work and wouldn't be coming home for dinner recently.
As for why Chris took time off but still went back to the Ministry...Kyle didn't dare ask, looking at Diana's still-angry face.
...
July passed quickly.
On his birthday, Kyle received many gifts, including a glass-like top from Fred and George.
There were two notes attached.
"Happy birthday, Kyle.
This is a Miniature Scrying Orb. If there are suspicious people around, it will spin and glow. We've tested it, and it works great."
"The only downside is that it's not very smart. Yesterday, a beetle crawled into Bill's soup, and it kept glowing...even though the beetle clearly crawled in by itself.
Oh, and Percy became the new student council president, and we're all happy for him. We're planning to give him a new badge."
Kyle raised an eyebrow, not believing a word of what the Weasley brothers said.
What kind of stupid beetle would crawl into soup on its own? They must have helped it 98% of the way...and Percy's student council president badge was probably doomed as well.
Kyle put the Miniature Scrying Orb aside and picked up Hagrid's gift.
As expected, it was a book.
"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"
As soon as Kyle took it out, the book jumped up and started crawling across the floor like a strange crab.
This was the book's special feature - it seemed to be alive due to some special magic.
However, the solution was simple: stroking the book's spine or...
"Relaxation Spell!"
Kyle cast a spell, and the book stopped moving, lying flat on the floor like a tasteless soft cushion.
Kyle walked over, tied a rope around the book's spine, and then picked up Hagrid's card.
"Dear Kyle:
Happy birthday!
You'll need this book next semester. I won't say more here; we'll talk when we meet. You won't believe what's happening - I still feel like I'm dreaming.
Wishing you all the best.
Hagrid"
Kyle raised an eyebrow, not expecting Hagrid to be so tight-lipped.
Giving him a book and saying he'd need it next semester...it was clear that Hagrid had taken over Professor Kettleburn's class and would become the new Care of Magical Creatures professor.
The events of last semester had cleared Hagrid's name, and he could finally do something other than being a gamekeeper.
The letter showed that Hagrid was truly happy.
Kyle was happy for him too.
After a moment of thought, Kyle found a piece of parchment and wrote a reply.
"Dear Hagrid:
Thanks for the gift; I love it. I'm looking forward to the new semester, but unfortunately, it's still a month away.
I'll have to follow Mr. Scamander to the Romanian Dragon Reserve for a while...something big is happening there. The dragons will fight each other until the strongest one becomes their new leader.
Kyle.
P.S. I heard there are dozens of dragons there."
