Chapter 34: Two Big Beasts Chasing Her
Chapter 34: Two Big Beasts Chasing Her
Her soft lips grazed his arm, and Zhou Chenglei's heart skipped a beat as if he had been electrocuted. He quickly pulled his hand away.
Jiang Xia's face instantly turned red, and she hurriedly backed away, only to bump into the bamboo chair on the tractor!
Zhou Chenglei quickly held her in place, his long arms bracing above her head. His voice was hoarse as he said, "Don't move, I'll move it. You should go back inside."
"Okay," Jiang Xia replied, her face burning as she was trapped between the tractor and him. The situation was too awkward, and she carefully slipped out from under his long arms.
Zhou Chenglei also breathed a sigh of relief, feeling even hotter than at noon.
Jiang Xia ran into the courtyard, then remembered she hadn't taken the basket of vegetables and the fruit.
She turned back to the driver's seat, picked up the basket, and carried it back into the house. Then she went to move the fruit and the large goose that Jiang Yang had given them.
It was a bit heavy, and she was struggling a bit.
Zhou Chenglei was unloading the furniture from the tractor, with his mother and great-grandmother helping to steady the items. Seeing her struggle, he said, "Leave it, I'll move it later."
Jiang Xia replied, "It's fine, I can do it."
Jiang Xia managed to carry the large, fifteen-pound goose off the tractor.
Zhou's mother asked, "Why did you buy two large geese?"
Zhou Chenglei replied, "Jiang Yang gave them to us."
Zhou's mother said, "That boy is always giving us things. Remember to send him some fish jerky next time."
"Sure."
Zhou's mother continued, "Jiang Yang used to serve in the army with you. His two kids are around six or seven, right?"
"About that," Zhou Chenglei casually responded, lifting two bamboo chairs by their backs and walking over to Jiang Xia. He effortlessly took the bag from her hand and carried it into the yard, placing the chairs and the bag of fruit under the eaves. He then went back to continue moving the other tables and chairs.
Zhou's mother, carrying two bamboo chairs, followed in and said, "You two should work harder!"
Zhou Chenglei didn't respond this time.
Jiang Xia certainly wasn't going to say anything; her face was still burning.
Great-Grandmother, carrying two bamboo chairs, chuckled as she entered, "They just got married, what's the rush? I'll tell you, don't be anxious. The more anxious you are, the less likely it is to happen. The more relaxed you are, the sooner it will come."
Zhou's mother, hearing this, dared not say anything more. It was true; the more anxious someone was, the less likely they were to conceive.
She went out to continue helping with the furniture.
Jiang Xia breathed a sigh of relief and decided to wash some fruit for everyone to eat.
She found a bamboo basket in the kitchen and picked up the mangoes and grapes, placing them in the basket, revealing two large watermelons.
She carried one watermelon to the well and used the water from the bucket to clean it.
It was so hot, and she planned to cut the watermelon so everyone could have a refreshing treat after moving the furniture.
The watermelon hadn't been chilled, and with the heat, the flesh would likely be warm, but the high water content would at least quench their thirst.
Zhou Chenglei brought in a bamboo bed and set it down. Seeing her, he walked over, picked up the watermelon, and threw it into the well.
"Hey, what are you doing? What if the watermelon sinks?" Jiang Xia anxiously peered into the well.
The watermelon submerged, splashing water, and then floated back up.
Jiang Xia: "..."
It didn't sink?
Zhou Chenglei pulled her a few steps away from the well. "It won't sink. You wanted to cool the watermelon, right? Just leave it in the well, and by evening, it will be nice and cold."
Jiang Xia, seeing this for the first time, nodded. "Oh."
"Stay away from the well," Zhou Chenglei added, still concerned, before continuing to move the furniture.
Since the watermelon couldn't be eaten right away, Jiang Xia washed the grapes and wild berries and placed them in a fruit basket. She then peeled the last pineapple, carefully cutting away the black spines and slicing it into six pieces, which she soaked in a bowl of cool, salted water.
Finally, she sliced a few more mangoes, diced the flesh, and placed it in a large bowl.
By the time she finished, Joel and the others had already brought everything inside and arranged it properly.
Jessica took a cloth and wiped down the new coffee table, then placed several fruit platters on it.
She smiled and invited them to enjoy the fruits.
Joel drank a cup of water and said, "You guys eat, I'll go return the tractor."
Jessica grabbed his sleeve, "Why the rush? You can go return it after you've eaten."
The great-grandmother chuckled and sat down on the new wooden sofa. "That's right, eat the fruits first before you go. It's not like a few minutes will make a difference! Oh, this bench is so comfortable!"
Joel's mother noticed the fruits on the table and felt a pang of pain. Who eats so many fruits at once? This must have cost a fortune!
She thought about her grandsons. "Ah Guang and the others haven't had fruits in a while. How many fruits did you buy? Do you have any left? I can give some to them..."
The great-grandmother plucked a grape and stuffed it into Joel's mother's mouth, cutting off her words. "These grapes are sweet, try them!"
Joel's mother: "..."
Each generation has its own destiny, why worry so much? As a mother-in-law, the worst thing is to be unclear, eating from one son's house while thinking about the other, wishing to take everything from one son to support the other.
Jessica used a toothpick to pick a piece of pineapple and offered it to Joel. "Try this and see if it's sweet."
Joel glanced at her, then took the pineapple from her hand, his large hand brushing against hers unintentionally.
Jessica felt her heart skip a beat, remembering the scene, her face flushed. She quickly looked down and picked a piece of pineapple for the great-grandmother and Joel's mother, offering it to them.
After Joel finished the pineapple, he started peeling grapes. Once he was done, he didn't eat them himself but placed the half-bowl of grape flesh in front of Jessica. "I'll go return the tractor."
Then he stood up and walked out.
Jessica turned to look at him, watching his long legs stride over the threshold, his posture tall and impressive.
She withdrew her gaze, picked a grape, and put it in her mouth. It was very sweet.
The great-grandmother and Joel's mother didn't eat too much either. After having a piece of pineapple, a grape, and a piece of mango, they stopped and went to the great-grandmother's house to weave fishing nets.
The women in the village would weave fishing nets to earn money whenever they had free time at home.
Few would sit idle, though there were some lazy women who would gather in groups to play cards or mahjong. But Joel's mother and the great-grandmother were not like that. They would weave fishing nets to earn money whenever they had free time.
Jessica finished the pineapple, the half-bowl of grapes, and some mango and mountain berries.
After eating the fruits, she washed her hands, took out a hoe, and planned to plant the fruit saplings and flowers she had brought back.
Then she noticed the two large geese tied up in the corner.
Recalling what Jessica's brother (previously Jiang Yang) had said about untethering the geese as soon as they got home, as tying them for too long could be fatal, Jessica walked over, grabbed each goose by the head, and carried them to the duck pond, releasing them.
Jessica's brother had caught the geese this way, so it should be fine.
But after she untied the two large geese and turned to leave, they spread their wings and started chasing her, trying to bite her!
Jessica had never encountered such a situation before!
She instinctively started running!
When Joel returned, he saw Jessica being chased by two large geese.
Seeing her running towards him, he thought the timid Jessica would run into his arms.
He instinctively reached out...
