Chapter 34: Farewell to the Old
Chapter 34: Farewell to the Old
With a click, the room lit up as Chen Chuan entered, closing the door behind him and walking towards the window. In the night sky, a bright moon hung high.
He reached out to draw the curtains closed and returned to the bed. Glancing at the alarm clock on the bedside table, he closed his eyes, and his second self instantly merged with him.
After a while, he opened his eyes and looked at the clock again. Today, in his determination to knock down Zhong Wu, he had used the Divine Shock Fist Force with every move, consuming a significant amount of overlap time. Yet, surprisingly, he had gained an additional two hundred and seventy seconds, and his overlap limit had exceeded six minutes.
This was the most significant progress his second self had ever made since its birth.
Zhong Wu was probably the most dangerous opponent he had ever faced, and at that moment, he had never felt such a strong desire to knock someone down.
It was precisely when his belief was at its strongest, and he was determined to do something and succeeded, that his second self resonated with an unprecedented intensity.
He reached out and turned off the alarm clock.
From now on, a new beginning awaited.
The next day, Chen Chuan woke up right on time.
With two days left before the start of school, he still had some preparations to make, and he knew he wouldn't have time after classes began. He needed to get in touch with some close friends, so he decided to call Ding Jiao first.
As soon as the call connected, a voice came through, "Hello? Is this Chen Chuan? Chuan Ge, you finally called! These past few days have been torture! I told them I had a classmate from Wu University, and we even sat together. Those turtle sons didn't believe me and said I was boasting! What was I boasting about? Do I look like someone who boasts?"
Chen Chuan held the receiver a little further away and said, "Then what?"
"What do you mean 'then what'?"
Chen Chuan smiled and said, "The boasting part?"
"Boasting, I was telling you... Hey! You're making fun of me again, right? Oh, by the way, what did you call me for?"
Chen Chuan said, "I passed the final exam for Wu Yi, just wanted to let you know so you don't keep asking if I have any news."
"You passed the final exam?" Ding Jiao's voice suddenly rose by an octave, "Awesome, awesome, awesome... Damn, I... I'm going! Chuan Ge, you're my brother!"
The loud voice could be heard from a distance, and Chen Chuan calmly moved the receiver away from his ear.
"Oh, Chuan Ge, you have to treat us! You have to! Can you hear me? How can you not treat us? Should I jump out of my window? Can you bear to let me do that?"
Chen Chuan thought for a moment, feeling it was quite serious. Although Ding Jiao lived on the first floor, there was a ditch outside the window. He said, "I was just thinking of that. We don't need a big group; just call a few close friends. Let's set a time to gather at Farewell Homestay."
"Okay! I'll call them right now! I'll talk to you later!"
Ding Jiao hung up excitedly. Chen Chuan thought for a moment and dialed another number, saying, "Mi Family Law Firm? I'm looking for Gao Ming."
After a short wait, a voice came through, "Brother, I've been following the news about Wu Yi's final exam. You're calling now, so I assume you've passed?"
Chen Chuan said, "Yes, I just passed last night."
The voice on the other end laughed and said, "Congratulations, brother! By the way, I won't be free for a couple of months. I'll be back then, but the timing is uncertain. I'll contact you when I know."
Chen Chuan knew he was busy, so he chatted briefly before hanging up.
Just then, he heard a bicycle bell outside, followed by someone knocking on the door and asking, "Is this where Chen Chuan lives? The Chen Chuan from Wu University? There's a package for you."
The voice was loud enough for the neighbors to hear.
Chen Chuan went out, opened the front gate, and saw a young man in a gray uniform, carrying a package on his back. Behind him was a bicycle loaded with packages on both sides. Upon seeing Chen Chuan, the young man handed him a large package and said admiringly, "You're Chen Chuan, right? You got into Wu University, that's amazing! My younger brother is taking the exam next year, I wonder if he'll make it. I gotta go." He hopped on his bike, rang the bell, and pedaled away.
After the delivery person left, Chen Chuan returned to his room and opened the package. Inside were two sets of training uniforms in a traditional style, both with right-sleeve openings. One set was green, and the other was white, each with a matching forehead protector.
In addition to the training uniforms, there were two sets of student formal wear, including hats, shoes, gloves, and socks. One set was for regular use, and the other was a winter uniform, both made with better materials and more vibrant colors than his current uniform. They also featured the Wu Yi University emblem on the chest.
There was also an elegant envelope with the Wu Yi University logo, which contained a small booklet and a key.
He took out a new student ID card, indicating that he was now an elite student at Wu Yi University, prioritized for cultivation after passing the final exam. The old student ID had been replaced by this new one.
The envelope also held a small booklet and a key.
The pamphlet was a fold-out booklet, starting with some congratulatory messages, as well as some school rules and notices from Wu Yi University. When fully unfolded, the back revealed an ink wash painting map of Wu Yi University, a beautifully detailed print that was likely created by a renowned artist.
As for the key, it was the assigned key to his dormitory, which he would use once the semester started.
After tidying up his belongings, he went to the courtyard to practice martial arts, and it was soon lunchtime.
After lunch, he changed his clothes and headed out, jogging towards the Fist House. However, he decided to make a detour to Wei Dong's place first to see how he was doing and whether he had passed the final exam.
This time, he didn't take the shortcut through the long alley but instead took the proper route, entering the residential building through the main entrance. He found the building where Wei Dong lived and climbed the stairs to the upper floor, where a poster of a fighter with a clenched fist was pasted on the door, clearly an old one by its style.
He knocked on the door and asked, "Is Wei Xiao Ge home?"
From inside, the sound of hurried footsteps approached, and the door was abruptly opened. Wei Dong stood behind it, his face covered in medicinal patches, and he waved at Chen Chuan. "Hey, Chen Xiao Ge! I didn't see you yesterday. Someone said you were at a different exam venue, and that guy almost got into a fight with me. But later, he didn't feel like it, so we didn't fight."
Chen Chuan smiled and said, "That was in the exam venue. If he wanted to fight, would you have fought him?"
Wei Dong proudly replied, "How could I? I just wanted to scare him. I promised Grandpa I'd do it, and I always keep my word."
Chen Chuan asked, "So, you passed the final exam?"
Wei Dong scratched his hair and said, "That guy was pretty strong. He knocked me down with a few punches and kicks. But I didn't give up. I got up and fought him several times—three or four times, I think. Then the teacher said it was enough and told us to stop, saying it was pointless to continue and a waste of time. So, I passed and could leave."
Chen Chuan extended his hand and said, "Congratulations, Wei Xiao Ge."
Wei Dong shook his hand vigorously and said, "Hey, congratulations to you too, Chen Xiao Ge! We can continue sparring in the future." He suddenly became more serious and added, "I'll find a way to win."
Chen Chuan smiled and replied, "Then you'll have to work hard."
After learning about Wei Dong's situation, Chen Chuan stayed for a while and then left, continuing on his way to the Fist House. He arrived at his destination around 2:00 p.m.
Lu Ke was cleaning the training gym when Chen Chuan entered, and he paused, looking surprised. "Chen Xiao Ge..." He, too, knew that Chen Chuan had gone to take the Wu Yi University final exam the day before but was unsure of the result.
Chen Chuan smiled at him and raised his clenched fist in greeting.
Lu Ke's face lit up, and he gave Chen Chuan a thumbs-up. "Chen Xiao Ge, you're amazing!" He seemed to remember something and added, "By the way, Master is upstairs. He's also waiting for your news."
Chen Chuan nodded and said, "I'll talk to him later." He headed upstairs to the second floor, where he saw Yu Gang standing on the balcony, his arms crossed as he gazed into the distance.
Chen Chuan approached Yu Gang and bowed, saying, "Mr. Yu, I passed the Wu Yi University final exam. In a few days, I'll be going to the academy. Thank you for your guidance during this time."
Yu Gang turned and lowered his arms. "Since you've passed the final exam, my training for you ends here."
Chen Chuan said, "Regardless, I must thank you for your guidance, Mr. Yu."
Yu Gang replied, "You have talent, and it will always shine through. I've repaid Captain Nian for his recommendation, and if you ask me about fighting techniques in the future, it won't be for the same price as before."
Chen Chuan laughed and said, "That's fair."
Yu Gang hummed in agreement and added, "There's competition everywhere, including Wu University, and sometimes it's beyond your imagination. You'll need to be careful."
Chen Chuan said earnestly, "Thank you for the reminder, Mr. Yu. I'll do my best to adapt."
After staying for a while, Chen Chuan bid farewell to Yu Gang. As he was leaving, Lu Ke handed him a plastic bag, saying, "Master asked me to give this to you."
Chen Chuan looked inside and exclaimed, "Black meat?"
Lu Ke nodded. "Yes, four pounds of black rat meat. It was bought with the extra money you paid. Master wants you to remember to eat it; it'll last you until school starts."
Chen Chuan smiled and said, "Please thank Master for me." He raised his hand in farewell and said, "I'm off."
Lu Ke hummed in acknowledgment.
Chen Chuan waved goodbye, and as he reached the alley's entrance, Lu Ke's voice called out from behind, "Chen Xiao Ge, come back often!"
Chen Chuan turned and smiled, saying, "Sure." He waved at Lu Ke and Yu Gang, who was watching from the balcony, and then turned and walked away.
Yu Gang and Lu Ke, master and disciple, watched Chen Chuan's figure disappear down the narrow alley, knowing that a broader world awaited him outside.
