Chapter 339: Principal Mu Yue
Chapter 339: Principal Mu Yue
On Friday, the students arrived at the training field early, even the latest arrivals were there twenty minutes before the start time.
Everyone knew that this was the last day of the special training, and after today, most of them would rarely see Mu Yue again.
The students from the Ninja Academy would still occasionally run into Mu Yue within the school grounds, even though she didn't teach their classes. However, for those who had already become ninjas, this would likely be their last encounter with Mu Yue, so everyone placed extra importance on this final day, wanting to leave a good impression.
Ten minutes before the start, Mu Yue, along with Hiruzen Sarutobi and some other Ninja Academy teachers, appeared before the students.
"Teacher Mu Yue! Third Hokage-sama!"
Many students greeted Mu Yue and Hiruzen proactively, and Mu Yue responded with a gentle smile, while Hiruzen nodded with a beaming expression.
"There are so many students here, around six hundred, I believe," a teacher exclaimed, stunned by the large number. The turnout was almost equal to the total student body of two grades at the Ninja Academy.
Moreover, they noticed that half of the students wore forehead protectors, indicating around three hundred ninjas in attendance, and some teachers even spotted students donning the jackets of Chunin-level ninjas.
Chikayu Isamu was completely dumbfounded. He couldn't believe that even Chunin-level ninjas had participated in the special training. After all, the teachers at the Ninja Academy were mostly Chunin-level themselves...
"We'll maintain the same grouping as before, dividing into three groups: A, B, and C. However, to enhance the quality of instruction, each group will be further divided according to their chakra nature types," Mu Yue briefly explained the arrangement for the day's training.
"How do you manage to teach so many students by yourself, Teacher Mu Yue?" Oshima Hiroaki asked, unable to contain his curiosity.
His teaching abilities were decent, and during the previous special training session, he had been chosen by Hiruzen Sarutobi to assist. However, the results hadn't been ideal.
Looking at the sea of students, Oshima couldn't fathom how Mu Yue did it. It was already impressive that she taught them all together, but on top of that, she also instructed each group according to their chakra nature types. He truly couldn't imagine how she conducted her regular classes.
"I have to thank the Second Hokage-sama for that. It would be challenging for one person to teach so many students effectively, but with multiple Shadow Clones, it's manageable," Mu Yue replied with a smile.
"But what about the fatigue that comes with dispelling the Shadow Clones...?" Oshima's confusion only deepened. While Shadow Clones were convenient, the resulting fatigue was very real, and he wondered if the workload would be unbearable.
"A little fatigue is nothing as long as the students learn well," Mu Yue continued.
Oshima then realized that Mu Yue was different from him. She wasn't a Chunin but a powerful Jonin capable of making a significant impact in battles against tailed beasts.
"Even for a Jonin, enduring this kind of fatigue would be difficult," Oshima thought to himself, genuinely admiring Mu Yue's dedication. He wouldn't want to trade places with her; her work ethic was too demanding.
"Why are we dividing them according to chakra nature types?" Chikayu asked, perplexed.
"Because I will be teaching them about nature transformation," Mu Yue replied succinctly.
The teachers exchanged shocked and bewildered looks. They had expected the special training to cover the basics like the Three-Step Training Exercise and chakra control, but they never anticipated nature transformation to be on the agenda.
Although Mu Yue's words were brief, the information they conveyed was astonishing.
"She's becoming more and more incredible," Shimono Hisanobu thought to himself, impressed.
Some of the younger teachers might not have known, but the Education Board had indeed convened to discuss ways to improve the quality of education at the Ninja Academy, and nature transformation, being a lifelong pursuit for ninjas, was naturally a topic of discussion.
Back then, Shimono had been the vice-homeroom teacher, not yet the homeroom teacher.
The Education Board deliberated at length but ultimately decided to maintain the status quo, concluding that attempting to teach nature transformation at the Ninja Academy would present too many challenges.
Having been part of those discussions, Shimono was well aware of the complexities involved, and he couldn't help but admire Mu Yue for single-handedly solving a problem that the entire Education Board couldn't resolve.
It wasn't just her teaching abilities that impressed him, but also the fact that Mu Yue could teach all five nature transformations, indicating that she could use five-nature-type jutsu like Hiruzen Sarutobi.
Shimono guessed that in a few more years, he would probably retire and make way for Mu Yue to take over.
Mu Yue then created several Shadow Clones and began overseeing the final exam, while her main body remained by Hiruzen's side, providing commentary.
Due to the large number of students in Groups C and B, Mu Yue created four Shadow Clones for each group, facilitating multiple simultaneous battles. With so many participants, it would take too long to hold individual matches, so Group A, being the smallest, proceeded with the standard format.
Hiruzen, just like the previous time, started observing Group C first.
He believed that this group's performance would be the true testament to the success of the special training. As the slowest-progressing group, if they could still demonstrate abilities that surprised him, then he had no doubt that Groups B and A would also excel.
"Mitsuhashi Anko versus Kiuchi Yayoi!" a Shadow Clone of Mu Yue called out the names of the students according to the list.
The named students quickly made their way to the designated combat area and began their match.
Her opponent, Yayoi Kiuchi, also possessed the fire affinity and quickly began forming hand seals to cast a fire-style ninjutsu of her own.
Yayoi was a tad slower in her hand seals, but since the fireball wasn't a particularly fast technique, this slight delay didn't make much of a difference. Soon, she, too, spat out a fireball.
Although they were both using the same jutsu, everyone could tell that Anko was the stronger of the two. Her fireball was noticeably larger.
There was no room for trickery in same-affinity ninjutsu battles—the stronger ninja would always prevail. Yayoi's fireball was immediately engulfed by Anko's, forcing her to dodge frantically. Anko seized this opportunity to defeat her opponent.
"Mu Yue, this student of yours is exceptional. She could even graduate early without any issues," Hiruzen Sarutobi said, stroking his beard with a smile.
Mu Yue's class had astoundingly high grades, and a few students, including Anko Mitarashi, were especially remarkable. Thus, Hiruzen remembered her name.
"Indeed, her fire-style ninjutsu is better than some genin who have been out of the Academy for half a year," one of the teachers chimed in.
"Her opponent is also impressive, being able to use fire-style ninjutsu," another teacher praised Yayoi.
Yayoi's homeroom teacher nodded. After all, Yayoi was an average student, and it was already commendable that she had learned a nature transformation ninjutsu in such a short time.
"She excels in practical combat, but there are still many other areas where she needs to improve," Mu Yue contemplated before answering.
Mu Yue didn't recommend early graduation unless the student had exceptional talent, like the level of the Third Hokage. After graduation, one would truly face all sorts of challenges.
Initially, the teachers praised some students for their ability to use ninjutsu, but after watching several battles, they realized that every student could do it—some were just more proficient than others.
"Mu Yue, these five ninjutsu you've developed are indeed quite interesting and well-suited for genin and chunin," Hiruzen said. Watching Mu Yue use these techniques herself gave him a different perspective.
He believed that these five ninjutsu should be promoted so that more genin and chunin could learn them.
Hiruzen's offhand comment left the teachers in awe once again. Not only was she teaching them ninjutsu, but she had also developed these techniques herself.
Mu Yue humbly acknowledged the compliment and continued her explanations.
Despite their proximity, the teachers felt like they were in a different world from Mu Yue.
Next, they moved on to Group B. As Hiruzen had expected, the average ninjutsu level in Group B was noticeably higher than in Group C. However, since most of the participants in Group B were already ninjas, their overall performance didn't leave as deep an impression as Group C.
When they arrived at Group A, the exam was already halfway through. The remaining students were all relatively strong ninjas.
"Asuma Sarutobi versus Genma Shiranui!"
Hiruzen and the others happened to arrive just in time for Asuma's battle.
The teachers glanced at Hiruzen, then quietly watched the combat unfold.
Hiruzen, however, maintained a neutral expression as he observed the fight, no different from how he behaved elsewhere.
"Looks like the exam will end here. But Asuma, don't get complacent. Defeating me won't be that easy," Genma said with a smile.
Asuma had consecutively ranked first in the previous practical exams, and Genma didn't consider himself a match for Asuma. Nonetheless, he wouldn't make it easy for Asuma to win.
After all, Genma's teacher was the famous Chen, known as the best taijutsu user in Konoha. Genma couldn't afford to lose face for his teacher.
"Then let's see how 'not easy' it will be," Asuma replied with a hearty laugh.
Although they were on good terms, Asuma wouldn't go easy on his opponent. After a brief taijutsu exchange, he realized that Genma's taijutsu was indeed commendable. Asuma immediately utilized Wind Release to accelerate his body and gain the upper hand.
Genma's chakra nature was lightning, which was weak against wind, and his lightning ninjutsu wasn't particularly strong either. The moment Asuma used his ninjutsu, the situation reversed, and Genma was quickly defeated.
"I remember Asuma's Wind Release not being that proficient during the Chunin Exams. I'm surprised to see him improve so much in such a short time," the teachers praised Asuma's prowess.
It wasn't just because Hiruzen was present; Asuma's performance was indeed impressive.
Hiruzen smiled faintly and said, "He's just bullying his junior, who's a year younger than him. If his opponent were Kakashi or Obito, he still wouldn't stand a chance."
None of the teachers dared to continue the conversation. It was fine for Hiruzen to belittle his son, but it would be unwise for them to join in.
Hiruzen was in a good mood, so he stopped Genma and pointed out some of his mistakes in the battle, offering a few tips for ninjutsu along the way.
"Thank you, Third Hokage-sama," Genma said, delighted to receive guidance from the Hokage despite his loss.
Hiruzen smiled, puffed on his pipe, and blew out white smoke. Watching the exam in person gave him a more realistic impression than just reading the reports. He would now start preparing to promote Mu Yue to the position of vice-principal.
