Chapter 338: The Successor
Chapter 338: The Successor
"Pfft!"
Linen opened his mouth wide and expelled a ball of flame. The swirling flames lifted him up and propelled him towards the sky.
He wasn't the only wizard with this ability; others were flying on magic carpets, in flying boats, and more.
There were hundreds of them, all moving forward in a grand procession.
Two days later, a pitch-black canyon came into view at the end of the horizon, spewing thick smoke that obscured the sky.
From within the smoke, flying monsters would occasionally emerge, their shrieks and howls echoing back and forth.
The Abyssal Rift!
"Ding!"
A sharp, piercing sound came from above, and Tier 2 Wizard Gear Jack, who had been gazing at the Abyssal Rift, turned away and spoke, his voice carrying clearly to everyone:
"Let's find a spot to set up our wizard array, clear out the nearby monsters, and wait for the others to arrive."
His voice wasn't loud, but it carried clearly to each person.
"Yes!"
"..."
The group responded and began descending.
Shadow Witch Gloria waved her sleeve, and a Wizard Tower materialized out of thin air, landing in the forest.
The tower stood dozens of meters tall, an eye-catching sight even amidst the towering trees.
After everyone landed, they began setting up wizard arrays, traps, and living quarters around the tower.
Once everything was prepared, the wizards entered the tower to await the instructions of the two Tier 2 Wizards.
"The primary objective of this operation is to eradicate the abyssal monsters. If we encounter wizards from the Abyssal Cottage, kill them if possible. If not, don't force it, and don't expect the Academy to come to your rescue if you're killed."
Gear Jack, wearing a wizard hat and his body tightly wrapped in a wizard robe, spoke with a sharp, grating voice, like metal clanging:
"Additionally..."
"Although we're working with the Demon Hunter Corps and the Black Wizard Tower, be cautious of their potential betrayal."
"Especially the Black Wizard Tower, where the number of lunatics rivals that of the Abyssal Cottage."
He scratched his head, impatiently removing his wizard hat to reveal a head adorned with countless gears.
Gear Jack!
His body had undergone mechanical modifications, a fusion of technology and wizardry, making him nearly invincible and one of the most formidable Tier 2 Wizards.
Beside him was Shadow Witch Gloria.
This Tier 2 Wizard appeared to have no physical form, just a shadow-like figure swaying back and forth on a chair.
It was said that this was a unique heritage.
By transforming one's physical body into a shadow, one could ignore most physical attacks and stay in the Astral Plane for extended periods.
In summary, the further one progressed as a wizard, the less human they became.
This was different from knights, as Linen's primary body, Karl, had reached the fourth rank while still maintaining a human form.
"Once everyone has arrived, each wizard will lead three Advanced Wizard Apprentices, and each apprentice will lead several Wizard Apprentices and knights, each responsible for their own area."
Gloria's voice was high-pitched, as if someone was squeezing her throat:
"Next, set up your designated areas."
"Charles!"
"Here."
"You're in charge of the northern swamp area." Gloria waved her hand, and a phantom image appeared, revealing the nearby terrain. She pointed to a specific area, which immediately enlarged and lit up, encircled by a red light.
"Yes."
Charles took a step forward and nodded, his voice filled with resignation.
He was already quite old and should have been enjoying his retirement at the Academy. He hadn't expected to be forcibly drafted.
As he contemplated the dangers ahead, his heart trembled. Could it be that he would meet his end here?
"Qiong!"
Ignoring Charles, Gloria continued:
"Here."
"You're in charge of this area."
"Yes."
"..."
"Linen!"
"Here."
Linen stepped forward and spoke before Gloria could say anything:
"Senior, I've just advanced to the rank of Wizard, and my combat power is low. If I were to participate in the monster eradication, it would be quite challenging."
"Hmm..." Gloria didn't seem annoyed but instead looked at Linen with interest:
"You became a full-fledged Wizard at the Academy just after turning sixteen. The last person to do so was one of my seniors."
"I wanted to take care of you, but you should've approached me privately. It seems inappropriate to give you special treatment in front of everyone, doesn't it?"
Hmm...
This person is rather straightforward, or perhaps it was just a joke?
Linen smiled and said, "Actually, compared to dueling, I have a greater talent for crafting potions. I can craft three first-rank potions and over a dozen low-rank potions with a decent success rate."
As he spoke, he placed several bottles of potions on the table in front of him.
"Hmm?"
Gloria leaned forward, and with her Tier 2 Wizard's Psychic Power, she didn't need to touch the potions to know their ingredients.
"Excellent!"
Before she could speak, Gear Jack had already nodded:
"You can stay near the Wizard Tower and craft potions. The Academy will exchange them for a certain number of Academy Points."
"Thank you, Senior Wizards," Linen expressed his gratitude.
Although his strength had improved significantly during this time, he never intended to fight on the front lines against the abyssal creatures.
A gentleman does not stand beneath a dangerous wall.
Staying in the rear is the right thing to do!"
Charles wanted to say a few words to Linen, but he was shut out and could only sigh and return. He gave a few instructions to the Apprentice Wizard beside him and cast the Flight Spell, flying towards the Abyssal Rift.
Soon, Charles landed near a golden-yellow tree, his body enveloped in a black robe, leaving only a pair of eerie crimson eyes visible.
"Charles!"
The figure in black stared at Charles, his voice deep and ominous.
"Any news?"
Charles nodded. "Yes, but it's not good."
"Hmm?"
"Linen has an exceptional talent for potion crafting. He's a First-Rank Alchemist, so he's been allowed to stay in the rear and doesn't have to participate in the demon-slaying missions."
"An Alchemist?" The Black Robe Mystic's voice was filled with confusion. "Just a few months ago, he was merely an Apprentice Wizard. How did he become a First-Rank Alchemist in such a short time, on top of advancing to a Full Wizard?"
"I know what you're thinking," Charles shrugged. "You suspect that Linen's body has been taken over by a Wizard?"
"No, the Academy Wizards have confirmed this, and he displayed his exceptional potion-crafting talent even before becoming a Wizard."
"Hmm..." The Mystic lowered his head, his voice deep and somber. "He killed Kito, so I should be grateful to him. But... our bloodline is destined to have only one survivor. Kito should have been the victor. But now, everything has changed because of Linen's appearance. Not only does he no longer have to fear Kito, but he can also devour Linen to break through his current realm."
"Xize, he won't come out now, and you can't do anything about it," Charles said.
"Don't worry," Xize assured him. "He can't stay hidden forever, and I believe in you, Charles. You don't want him to live, do you?"
Charles' mouth twitched slightly. Indeed, he had sold Linen to Kito, but Kito was killed, and Linen survived. With Linen's grade and foundation, he would eventually surpass Charles. When that time came... perhaps Charles would already be long gone, but he had descendants who would face Linen's targeting.
Whether for himself or his descendants, Charles wanted Linen dead.
"I understand," Charles sighed. "I'll figure something out."
