Chapter 338: He Can't Hide for Long!
Chapter 338: He Can’t Hide for Long!
Ivan held his breath and took a few steps forward, entering the reception hall behind the front desk.
The space was large, with pale blue candles burning around the room. In the center stood a dark gray round table, and several figures were vaguely visible in the candlelight.
Ivan’s gaze swept around the room, and he realized there were eleven people in the reception hall! This was far more than he had anticipated.
Brock, whom he hadn’t seen in a long time, was hunched in a large chair.
He looked much the same as he had a year ago, with his greasy hair neatly combed back and a strangely kind smile on his aged face. His sunken, elongated left hand held a round, eyeball-like probe, which he played with casually.
From Ivan’s perspective, he could also see two dark rings on Brock’s ring and little fingers, glowing with a strange, dark light.
Two male wizards in old, worn robes stood behind Brock, while the others were divided into two groups, facing him from a distance.
Ivan had just entered when he heard a middle-aged wizard with a displeased expression speak up to Brock.
“Mr. Borgin, you assured us it would be foolproof! Now you’re telling us the target’s status is unknown?”
“Don’t say that, Heins!” Brock’s expression remained unchanged. He waved his hand to calm the other wizard down and continued, “The information I received is that Aisha died in the attack. Someone saw a young wizard carrying Aisha’s body and fleeing the scene after the incident. This means our plan was still a success.”
“How do we know you’re telling the truth? And if your spy saw this, why didn’t they bring back the witch’s body and her child?” Heins sneered.
Heins was clearly dissatisfied with Brock’s explanation. Without seeing the body, who knew if Brock was lying to deceive them?
Moreover, they had sent so many people, and not one of them returned, all dying in that magic shop. This was not what they had agreed upon!
After Heins spoke, the others also joined in, demanding that Brock give them an explanation!
Brock, seated in the main chair, felt a headache coming on. In truth, the total annihilation of the people he had sent was something he had not anticipated.
Brock had believed that after dealing with Aisha for so many years, he had a deep understanding of her capabilities. Plus, she had been carrying a child, which should have made it impossible for her to survive the sudden attack!
So, Brock had been quite confident, expecting good news soon. However, after waiting for a long time, all he saw was the explosion and the flames, with no one returning.
The news of Aisha’s death was relayed to him by his spy, who had heard it from nearby residents, and the veracity of this information was still uncertain.
More bizarrely, when his people returned to the magic shop, they found that someone had used a Restoration Charm to repair the damage from the battle, and all the bodies and bloodstains had vanished without a trace.
Additionally, the house of Aisha’s friend, Dugdale, had been mysteriously destroyed.
All these strange occurrences made Brock feel that something was not right, which was why he had invited Heins and the others over to discuss their next steps.
However, in the face of the relentless questioning from Heins and the others, Brock felt a surge of anger. He pulled a stern face, glanced around at everyone, and spoke in a deep voice.
"Alright, have you all said enough! This time, it was indeed my mistake, but don't forget that my people were also among those who died there! And I warned you all from the start that it wasn't a good idea to confront the shop owner in a Dark Magic Shop."
Upon hearing Brock's words, the faces of the few Dark Wizards darkened, and they couldn't really argue back. Among the ten people they had sent, three were indeed Brock's subordinates, and it was unlikely that Brock would betray his own people.
More importantly, Heins and the others picked up on the threat in Brock's words, reminding them that they were sitting in the parlor of a Dark Magic Shop, and no one knew what kind of traps Brock might have set up here.
So, even though they outnumbered Brock, they didn't dare to push him too hard, for fear that a real fight might not end in their favor.
Seeing that everyone had calmed down a bit, Brock cleared his throat and began to discuss the next steps.
The most urgent task now was to send more people to investigate what had happened and confirm whether Aisha was truly dead and where her son, Ivan Halse, had fled to.
They also needed to send a few people to search the empty magic shop to see if they could find any useful clues.
What Brock and the others didn't know was that one of their targets was listening to their conversation from nearby.
Ivan, hiding in the shadows, listened for a while and realized that these Dark Wizards were not a unified group but rather a temporary alliance.
They even argued over which side had contributed more, though they hadn't come to blows yet.
This made Ivan somewhat disappointed; he had hoped to benefit from their infighting.
After observing for a while, Ivan quickly divided the eleven wizards into different camps based on their positions and words.
Borgin and his two subordinates were obvious, and the remaining eight wizards were divided into two groups. The middle-aged wizard named Heins and a few other Dark Wizards with grim faces likely belonged to the same camp, possibly the ones who had escaped the Aurors' crackdown last year.
The last three were muscular and had a hint of madness in their eyes, a quality that reminded Ivan of Adan, who had been furious and violent before dying at his hands.
Under Ivan's watchful gaze, the leader of these three, after arguing with Brock for a while, spoke impatiently.
"Mr. Borgin, what about the thing you promised us? You told us that if we helped you get rid of your old rival, we would get the formula for the Wolfsbane Potion! According to your own words, that woman is likely dead now. Where is the formula?"
Brock smiled, his left hand spinning the Scrying Eye, and reassured them.
"Don't be too hasty, Light! You should read the newspapers. Aisha's son, Ivan Halse, is the one who developed the Wolfsbane Potion. Now that his mother is dead and no one is protecting him, he won't be able to hide for long in Knockturn Alley."
