Chapter 337: Sigrid's Boomerang
Chapter 337: Sigrid's Boomerang
Three days later.
A gentle breeze brushed past, carrying with it the coldness of the snow and the ruggedness of the northern borderlands. It felt like a thousand years of weight, coupled with the refreshing chill of the snowfield.
With a slight furrow on her brow, Sigrid woke up amid the bitter cold of winter, feeling a chill run through her body, and her eyes opened involuntarily.
She seemed to be on a moving vehicle, bumping along a snowy mountain road, causing even the seat beneath her to shake.
Despite the turbulence, there remained a hint of warmth on her left shoulder.
The warmth on her shoulder reminded her of her mother, who would sit by her side and provide comfort when she was ill as a child.
Sigrid slowly turned her head.
In the midst of the cold wind, her companion sat by her side, dressed in a white shirt and a vest with a diamond-patterned stripe, his expression calm as he held the reins.
"...”
The young man on her left noticed that she had woken up and glanced at her with a smile.
However, his attention remained fixed on the road ahead as he guided the snow sled with the reins.
"I feel so weak..."
Sid's voice, usually full of life, now sounded listless and weak. She pulled the thick coat tighter around herself.
So this was how cold winter could be.
The days in the northern snowfields were short, and it was hard to tell if it was early morning or afternoon. Soon, the temperature would likely drop even further.
She paid no heed to her disheveled hair and instead fixed her gaze on Lance.
She had no idea how long she had been unconscious, nor where they were now.
Lance's usually well-kept collar, similar to that of a priest's, had become wrinkled from being used as a blanket by Sigrid.
"You've been unconscious for three days. During this time, Cat Boss has been taking care of you the most. We're still on the road from the Northern Border Province to the Snowfield Province, and it will probably take a few more days to get back to the Snowfield Province."
Lance answered as if he knew what she was going to ask.
Although Cat Boss had weak magic power, he was still able to use some high-level healing cards to alleviate some of Sigrid's external injuries.
Sigrid lowered her gaze and noticed the small black cat sitting between her and Lance. She knew that if this little cat used the Transformation Technique: Human, it would probably turn into a cute little girl.
As always, Cat Boss shivered under her gaze, appearing timid and nervous.
"Thank you, little cat."
Sigrid expressed her gratitude.
"Meow... meow."
The little black cat seemed reluctant to accept the thanks from the Bishop of Darkness, merely nodding with its head lowered.
For some reason, it felt like Sigrid wasn't as intimidating as before.
Perhaps it was because her tone had become softer, or maybe the terrifying aura around her had diminished.
"By the way, Sid, there's something I need to tell you."
Lance paused for a moment, then continued.
"What is it?"
Sigrid asked.
"It seems that you've been sealed, and your state has been locked."
Lance furrowed his brows, unsure.
He had vaguely sensed the spell that Aske had used to deliver the final blow to Sigrid. Not only had it inflicted a fatal wound, but it had also locked her state in place.
Sigrid's back was riddled with wounds, many of which had torn open flesh and exposed the white bones beneath. Every time her body attempted to heal, a faint cracking sound could be heard as the wounds reopened. It was unimaginable the kind of pain she was enduring. Cat Boss could only wrap layer after layer of bandages to tightly bind her wounds.
Despite her inhuman regenerative abilities, she was unable to recover.
This sealing technique bore some resemblance to the sealing magic, "Eternal Retribution," that Lance had obtained during the Dark Cleric Feast at the Sacred Temple. It could prevent the target from healing any injuries inflicted and even made it impossible to undo the seal. It seemed that Aske had prepared this specifically to counter Sigrid's formidable regenerative abilities.
Only a ninth-rank sealer stronger than Aske or his death would likely be able to lift the seal.
"..."
Sigrid fell silent upon hearing this. She, too, could sense that she hadn't regained even a bit of her strength and felt as if she was still lingering at the brink of death.
In her current state, even a fifth or sixth-rank Extinction Cleric could finish her off with ease.
"Askesan and that guy in the black robe are probably heavily injured as well and won't be chasing us southward any time soon," Lance added.
However, the north was still Extinction's territory, and with communications blocked, they couldn't send any messages to the Imperial Capital or any other Bastion branches south of their location. The two of them were essentially isolated and without any backup.
"What should we do now?" Sigrid asked Lance.
She had a vague idea that the good news was probably that Lance had successfully fled the Northern Border Province with her, and they had managed to shake off the black-robed man and the Extinction Bishop.
But that didn't mean they could smoothly return to the Imperial Capital of Helrom.
If they attempted to head back to the capital, they would likely face relentless obstruction from Extinction forces all the way south. Even if Askesan was currently lying low to recover from his injuries and was wary of another explosion from Lance, he wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice his subordinates.
There would undoubtedly be countless Extinction lackeys ahead, blocking their path at all costs.
"Head south, back to the Imperial Capital of Helrom," Lance replied nonchalantly, a smile on his face as if he was enjoying every step of the journey, never once coming up empty-handed.
"..."
Sigrid never imagined that she would one day embark on a journey of escape, her future uncertain.
This was how it felt to lose the power that had once granted her a peaceful life.
However, seeing Lance's unwavering optimism, she felt a sense of relief.
After all, she had scraped by with her life, and this snowy journey, though fraught with thorns, felt unexpectedly pleasant. More importantly, having someone who had experienced life and death by her side made her feel that the road ahead, though challenging, was not impossible.
"Saint, you have to protect me well. I'm just a fragile girl," Sigrid said with a faint smile.
Her current state was probably even worse than when she had disguised herself as Sid.
"I want to make a statement first. I'm only your companion now, and while theoretically, I might be able to save your life, I won't stop you if you want to commit suicide. I respect others' choices regarding their fate. When I judge that you're about to do something suicidal, I won't follow you," Lance said, turning his head to look at her without an ounce of chivalry, a smile still on his face.
"..."
Sigrid continued to smile, but her expression froze, as if she was biting her lip to hold back her anger.
She felt like she had heard those words before.
"Also, when I judge that the enemy is far stronger than me, I will make a reasonable judgment as a fourth-rank Seal Master. For example, when it's time to run, I will choose to flee, and I will also choose whether to sell you out or bring you along with me," Lance continued, eyes closed, his expression carefree as he explained his mechanism of action to Sigrid, which also served as a disclaimer.
"..."
Sigrid remained silent, simply smiling as she looked at Lance. If she regained her strength, she really felt like strangling this green tea boy.
"So now you understand. My favorability level is very important," Lance said with conviction as he patted Sigrid's shoulder.
After a moment of silence, Sigrid spoke up.
"Saint."
"Hmm?"
"It's best if you don't speak to other girls like that."
"Why?"
"Because I have a good temper and won't really do anything to you, but women with shorter tempers might not be so forgiving."
Sigrid smiled as she spoke, but it seemed like a smile born of anger.
