Chapter 336: The Same Action, Different Outcomes
Chapter 336: The Same Action, Different Outcomes
Newt stared at Kyle, not speaking.
He wasn't opposed to having an extra assistant; he just didn't want to be seen as old and feeble.
It was just an assistant, and he had had assistants before, so there was nothing to be averse to.
Moreover, upon careful consideration, house-elves were actually easier to get along with. At least their thoughts were simple, and they worked diligently and meticulously, rarely making mistakes.
Newt had already accepted this fact when Tina and Dobby were discussing wages.
He looked at Kyle for another reason.
"A week ago, Dumbledore sent your letter," Newt said with a complex expression. "To be honest, I regret giving it to you."
The first year Kyle enrolled was so good. Although there was the Dark Wizard Auren, it could only be considered an internal school problem. On the day the issue was resolved, life quickly returned to calm.
But since the second year, when he gave the box to Kyle, everything changed.
That year, before it ended, he saw trolls, three-headed dogs, Norwegian Ridgebacks... in Kyle's box. Among them, Newt had even helped care for the trolls and dragons for a while.
It was also Newt's first time to see the richness of species in the Hogwarts Forbidden Forest... even the rarely seen three-headed dog in Greece was there. He had only seen that creature twice.
Originally, Newt thought this was the limit.
After all, both Norwegian Ridgebacks and three-headed dogs are 5X-level magical creatures. There couldn't be any more dangerous species in the Forbidden Forest than them.
Newt never imagined that there would be a secret chamber in the Hogwarts castle.
Kyle not only found it but also brought back the thousand-year-old basilisk from inside.
After seeing Dumbledore's letter and the enormous dark green monster in the box, Newt was stunned.
A thousand-year-old basilisk... just thinking about it was incredible.
Facing Newt's strange gaze, Kyle scratched his hair awkwardly, "It was just a coincidence. Salazar Slytherin insisted on giving it to me, and I couldn't refuse."
"Slytherin gave it to you?" Newt blinked in confusion. Dumbledore's letter didn't mention this.
"But I heard that the secret chamber was left for the Slytherin heir."
"Maybe I am," Kyle thought and said, "After all, my mother is a Slytherin graduate."
"..."
Newt stared at Kyle without saying a word, as if meeting him for the first time.
What a guy, really trying to force a connection.
Newt felt like continuing the conversation and shook his head. Taking advantage of Tina and Dobby leaving the box, he led Kyle to a large cave.
"Dumbledore asked me to help find a new home for the basilisk," Newt waved his wand. The plants at the bottom of the small mountain moved to the sides, revealing a huge cave.
The basilisk lay quietly inside, motionless.
"I know, he doesn't want the basilisk to appear in the castle in any form," Kyle went forward and stroked the basilisk's scales, "Before I graduate, it might have to stay with you for a while."
"Even after you graduate, it can," Newt said with a smile, "I've never dealt with a live basilisk before. This is a good opportunity. Are you sure it won't wake up?"
"No," Kyle shook his head, "If no one summons it with Parseltongue, it can sleep forever."
Newt took out his wand and tapped the basilisk lightly.
An orange orb of light flickered twice before dissipating.
"Astonishing," Newt remarked with interest. "Such a massive body, yet it consumes less energy during its slumber than a Kelpie. Is this due to the Basilisk's innate abilities, or is it because of Salazar Slytherin?"
"It's probably because of Slytherin," Kyle said uncertainly. "He taught me how to put the Basilisk to sleep."
"My thoughts are the opposite of yours..."
Newt carefully examined the Basilisk's scales.
"Thirty years ago, when I was in the pyramid, I stumbled upon a dead Basilisk. I remember it had eight fine lines on its scales."
"The one you brought has lines on it."
Newt stood up and began pacing, speaking softly, "These lines might represent their age, adding one every century... If that's the case, then that Basilisk was eight hundred years old."
"It didn't receive any help from Salazar Slytherin, yet it lived for so long."
Newt turned a few circles, then took out an unknown potion and poured it onto the Basilisk.
The gray potion was sticky and quickly began to solidify, turning into a thin, snake-like substance.
Newt peeled it off, and Kyle noticed the fine lines from the Basilisk's scales clearly imprinted on it.

Afterwards, the two left the cave, and the surrounding plants closed in again, covering the entrance.
"I was planning to publish the new edition of 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' next year, but now it looks like I can move up the schedule significantly."
"Oh, right, and here's this."
After hesitating for a while, Newt took out a box and handed it over.
It was Dumbledore's box, Kyle's box, which Newt had kept after transferring the Basilisk. Now it was time to return it.
Although this box had already brought him two surprises, or rather, shocks, he believed there wouldn't be any more after this.
Surely Hogwarts wouldn't have another Slytherin Chamber of Secrets.
After all, there were only a few magical creatures that could live for hundreds or even thousands of years, and none of them had a lion-like appearance... Of course, there were no eagles or badgers either.
Moreover, after dealing with the Basilisk, Newt's tolerance had increased significantly. Even if Kyle brought back a 5X magical creature, like a Quintaped or an Eight-Eyed Spider, he wouldn't be too surprised.
Even if it was a Niffler... Well, maybe not that.
"I've already fed Norbert for you."
"And I'm sure Dumbledore hasn't opened it."
Kyle nodded in agreement.
Dumbledore was currently focused on other matters and didn't have time to deal with the box.
In the past month, he had only appeared at the End-of-Year Feast a week ago; the rest of the time, he was rarely at school.
As Kyle took the box, Newt's expression became complex.
He recalled how he and his friends were expelled for breeding Nifflers in the castle.
Then there was Kyle, who had raised a Troll, a Dragon, and a Basilisk... Any one of these creatures was far more dangerous than a Niffler, right?
Yet, not only was he not expelled, but he also became the first student to receive the House Special Contribution Award for three consecutive years.
The contrast was just too great.
