Chapter 336: Su He Yuan's Lingering Fear
Chapter 336: Su He Yuan's Lingering Fear
He Hangguang's case was ruled as an accident, with the female victim stating that she had provoked him with her unrestrained remarks. In a fit of rage, he dragged her onto the balcony to force her to admit her mistake and apologize, but she refused, and during their struggle, she accidentally fell.
The woman, in a clear state of mind, insisted that it was unintentional and that He Hangguang did not intend to kill her. With the key witness' statement and the lack of concrete evidence, the police could not conclude it as murder.
Due to insufficient evidence, He Hangguang was ultimately convicted of intentional assault and sentenced to three years in prison. As for He Zhuliang's case, it was still in the prosecution phase.
Zong Jinghua, with his connections in the police force, informed Lu Jiaxin: "That woman received ten million in compensation and left the country as soon as the case was closed."
Rationally speaking, the woman made the most beneficial choice for herself, which ultimately let He Hangguang off lightly. Lu Jiaxin had thought that even for intentional assault, the sentence would be five or six years, but she never expected it to be only three.
Noticing Lu Jiaxin's regretful expression, Zong Jinghua said, "Boss, if you feel unsatisfied, I can ask someone to teach him a lesson. He won't have a peaceful day in prison."
Lu Jiaxin waved her hand, indicating it was unnecessary. She wasn't so wealthy that she could afford to waste money on such a person.
Two days later, Nie Zhan told Lu Jiaxin, "He Zhuliang has entrusted his shares to He Mingzhu for management."
"He only entrusted her with the management and didn't transfer the shares to He Mingzhu's name, right?"
"He transferred ten percent of the shares to her and entrusted her with managing another twenty-six percent. Someone like He Zhuliang would never transfer the shares under his name to He Mingzhu or anyone else."
The transfer of ten percent of the shares to He Mingzhu was an interesting move.
Nie Zhan continued, "The power of attorney has been signed, and He Mingzhu has already requested to reconvene the board of directors. Having worked in the company for so many years, she should have gained the support of a group of people, and with her capabilities, she should be able to win."
"As for what prompted He Zhuliang to make such a decision, I'm not sure, but there's no doubt that He Mingzhu has become the biggest winner."
"It's a pity that Hong Kong doesn't have the death penalty," Lu Jiaxin said. "Otherwise, with all the heinous things He Zhuliang has done, he deserves to be executed ten times over."
Although Nie Zhan did not agree with the death penalty, he knew that he and Lu Jiaxin had received different educations, so he tactfully changed the subject. "My mom will be back for Chinese New Year, and she might come to see you. She's quite carefree, so if you don't like her, you can just ignore her."
Lu Jiaxin glanced at him and said, "Then we might not meet. I'll be traveling during the school break and won't be back until the semester starts."
Knowing her love for travel, Nie Zhan asked, "Have you decided where to go?"
Seeing Lu Jiaxin shake her head, Nie Zhan suggested, "Then let's go to Courchevel. We missed the chance to go to the snow field during the summer vacation, so let's go there together during the winter break."
This was a small regret for him.
Lu Jiaxin did not refuse. "Your timing is uncertain, so I'll go on my own trip first. When you have time, we can meet up at the Courchevel snow field."
Nie Zhan agreed with this arrangement.
Two days later, Gu Wenfeng walked in with a document bag and apologized to Lu Jiaxin, "Boss, you gave me ten thousand green dollars to hire a private detective to investigate the He family's jewelry business. The investigation didn't cost that much, so I asked the private detective to help me investigate another person."
Lu Jiaxin was puzzled, "Who do you want to investigate? Why didn't you discuss it with me?"
"Ye Xin," Gu Wenfeng replied. "I felt that this woman was suspicious, but without evidence, I didn't want to make baseless accusations."
"What did you find out?"
Gu Wenfeng shook his head, indicating that he hadn't opened the document bag. "This detective is well-regarded in his field. When he handed this over to me, he said that further investigation would require additional payment. I didn't open it, thinking that I should discuss it with you first."
The document bag was lightweight, and when Lu Jiaxin opened it, she poured out its contents. Inside was a file and nine photographs.
The photos were of Ye Xin with different men, taken in low lighting, presumably at night. They weren't scandalous, as the subjects were appropriately dressed and maintained a respectable distance.
Lu Jiaxin gazed at Ye Xin in the photos, her graceful and alluring demeanor captivating. It wasn't just Su He Yuan who would be captivated; even Lu Jiaxin found it hard to look away.
Satisfied that the photos were innocuous, Lu Jiaxin turned to the file. After reading its contents, however, she felt a prickle of unease on her scalp. The nine men in the photos were influential figures in politics, law enforcement, and finance, and the private detective had thoughtfully included detailed backgrounds on each of them.
Lu Jiaxin returned the contents to the document bag and said, "Tell the detective that we won't be pursuing this any further. Also, give him an additional five thousand green dollars and ask him to keep this matter to himself; otherwise, he might get into trouble as well."
Frowning as he perused the file, Gu Wenfeng remarked, "Has this woman done something illegal? I felt a sense of danger the first time I met her."
"Brother Gu, we're in Hong Kong," Lu Jiaxin replied. "It will be another twelve years before the handover, and for now, we follow the British legal system. I don't want to end up dead in my own home."
In truth, Hong Kong was quite chaotic at the time, with only the wealthy districts enjoying better security. Places like Kowloon Walled City were lawless, beyond the government's control.
"Jiaxin," Gu Wenfeng said, "I sense that Mr. Su still has feelings for that woman. I think you should show him this file and dissuade him from having any further involvement with her."
He added, "If he gets entangled with Ms. Ye, it could bring trouble to the Xie family and Madam Xie."
Lu Jiaxin shot him a glance, her expression glum. "Do you think I'm heartless and cold-blooded? I would never hide something this important from Su He Yuan."
Gu Wenfeng quickly apologized, attributing his remark to a slip of the tongue.
Lu Jiaxin understood that it wasn't a slip but rather his deep affection for the Xie family, and his worry that Su He Yuan might inadvertently cause them harm. She let it pass and asked curiously, "Why do you feel that Ye Xin is dangerous?"
"It's just a hunch," he replied.
Perhaps his instincts, honed through many dangerous missions, had detected a threat. Such intuitive feelings were difficult to explain scientifically.
Lu Jiaxin called Su He Yuan over and handed him the file. "Look at this. It's what I paid a hefty sum to find out."
Su He Yuan opened the document bag, puzzled, but as he viewed the photos and read the accompanying information, a chill ran down his spine. He realized that without Lu Jiaxin's intervention, he might have been drawn into a perilous situation from which there would be no escape.
Su He Yuan's fear turned to gratitude as he grasped Lu Jiaxin's arm. "Jiaxin, thank you. You've saved my life!"
Lu Jiaxin agreed that he had narrowly escaped disaster. Had he married Ye Xin, it would have been a calamity. "The one you should really thank is Nie Zhan. If he hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known about Ye Xin's background."
"I'll treat you both to a meal soon," Su He Yuan promised.
Lu Jiaxin nodded. "I'm giving you this file. It's up to you to decide what to do with it."
"Okay," he said.
