Chapter 335: Newt's Unconventional Companion
Chapter 335: Newt's Unconventional Companion
In a lush forest in Dorsetshire, a beautiful wooden cottage stood in the midst of the woods, home to the renowned magical creature specialist of the Wizarding World, Newt Scamander.
The tranquility of the forest was disrupted by a loud booming sound early in the morning.
On a nearby tree, a hag peeked out, and several peculiar beetles crawled out of the tree and marched into another tree hole.
Dobby anxiously surveyed his surroundings. Upon his arrival, he had felt an inexplicable sense of danger, a tremor that made him instinctively want to flee and run far away.
Fortunately, this sensation quickly dissipated as if it had never existed.
Kyle led Dobby along a pebbled path and knocked on the cottage door.
Newt and Tina had already received word and were waiting inside.
"Dear, is this the house-elf you mentioned in your letter?" Tina asked, looking at the pair.
"Greetings, respected madam. I am Dobby, a free house-elf," Dobby bowed.
"Hello, Dobby. It's nice to meet you," Tina smiled.
Dobby was thrilled by her words and quickly bowed, his long nose almost touching the floor.
Tina did not object to Kyle bringing a house-elf. As mentioned in his letter, Newt was indeed quite old, and an extra helper would be beneficial.
However, Newt himself did not share this sentiment.
He believed he was fully capable of caring for his magical creatures and did not require any assistance.
Unfortunately, he had no say in the matter, and Tina had not sought his opinion from start to finish.
Even now, he was still sulking on the sidelines, although it was equally ineffective.
The initial meeting was relatively harmonious. Tina approached Dobby and said,
"I agree to employ you to care for some more challenging magical creatures."
"No problem. Dobby has experience with Kelpies and Peacocks," Dobby replied.
Kelpies?
Peacocks?
Tina raised an eyebrow and glanced at Kyle. "Did you not inform him about anything?"
"I did," Kyle shrugged. "But he was too excited and didn't listen."
"Never mind..."
Tina waved her hand, and Newt naturally opened the box and placed it on the ground.
"Follow me, and I'll show you first. This job might be different from what you expected. See for yourself if you want to stay," she said to Dobby.
Tina stepped into the box.
Initially, Dobby wasn't too concerned and even felt a bit underestimated.
It was just about taking care of magical creatures, something he was very experienced in. And what could be inside such a small box? At most, it would be some kittens or puppies.
He had successfully fed, bathed, and groomed his previous master's Kelpie, despite it biting him every time.
Dobby didn't think any creature could be more ferocious than that Kelpie.
These two people were so kind and respectful, and their creatures would surely be tame...
"Oh!"
As he was thinking, Dobby followed Tina into the box.
In less than a second, he was startled and jumped, then fell heavily to the ground. His short legs flailed, and he scrambled into a corner.
It was that terrifying sensation from the entrance again, but even stronger this time!
Dobby felt his vision darken as he was overwhelmed by the numerous magical creatures, almost fainting.
"Especially that six-legged cat on the cliff not far away... no, it's bigger than a cat."
Whatever it is, being stared at by those deep blue eyes, Dobby feels like a turkey about to be sent into an oven, unable to hide any secrets.
Now, it seems like it doesn't want to be the best house-elf anymore.
"Just like what you see here," Tina says.
"Your job is to be Newt's assistant, taking care of these magical creatures, and this is just a small part of it."
"How about it? Do you agree?"
Dobby's ears twitched; it had heard something...
Not a servant, but a wizard's assistant? Dobby crawls up from the ground, its legs no longer trembling.
"Honorable Madam, Dobby is willing to be an assistant."
"You better think it through," Tina glances at it.
"This is just a small part of it. Farther away, there are dragons, venomous panthers, and mermaids..."
Hearing the word 'dragon', Dobby shudders involuntarily, but he still stands there, enduring it.

"Dobby can do it, Dobby isn't afraid of dragons!"
Tina smiles.
In fact, with Newt here, there won't be any danger, and it's mostly just doing odd jobs.
Back then, even Jacob, a Muggle, could come and go freely here, let alone a house-elf.
Of course, the prerequisite is that it must pass its own mental hurdle; fainting at the sight of a dragon won't do.
"Next is the salary."
Dobby's eyes lit up.
"How about twenty Galleons a week..." Tina ponders for a moment and gives a number.
Dobby sits back on the ground, startled. In its eyes, the number twenty Galleons seems more terrifying than a dragon.
"No, no, that's too much," Dobby shakes his head repeatedly, insisting on just one Sickle a week.
This time, it's Tina's turn to frown.
As Scamander's assistant, only one Sickle a week? If other wizards knew, they'd think Scamander couldn't afford an assistant's wages!
"One Sickle is absolutely not acceptable. At least ten Galleons!"
Dobby, who had just gotten up, falls back to the ground. He was about to say something, but Tina had already frowned.
And so the matter was settled. Dobby didn't say another word.
Kyle silently gives a thumbs up from the side.
No wonder Tina had once arrested the "Disaster of the Wizarding World" and kept him captive for over seventy years. With just a glance, she forces the poor house-elf to close its mouth and accept the weekly salary of ten Galleons.
But why does this sound so strange? It's as if the Sickle is the largest currency in the Wizarding World.
Next are the other minor issues.
For instance, Tina only allows Dobby to work inside the box, not outside it.
Especially in the kitchen, Tina strictly forbids Dobby from approaching the machines that make cookies and bread, not even one step closer.
Dobby agrees... of course, it can't refuse.
Throughout the process, Newt stands to the side, not saying a word, just staring intently at Kyle.
"Ahem... I'm doing this for your own good," Kyle says, feeling uncomfortable under Newt's gaze.
"Nicholas Flamel has a house-elf named Tatty who serves as his butler, and Professor Dumbledore has over a hundred elves helping him make tea.
You're friends with them, so you should learn to get along."
