Chapter 334: Poaching
Chapter 334: Poaching
October 29, 2024
Several days had passed.
In the skies above the Dinghu Neighborhood, an aircraft appeared.
Below, the crowd looked on in bewilderment and curiosity.
The sleek, aerodynamic aircraft, resembling a sports car with two wings, slowly descended in front of a villa.
As the wings retracted, two figures emerged from the aircraft.
Leading the way was a young man who appeared to be in his late teens, exuding confidence in his eyes.
The other was a middle-aged man with an ordinary appearance, the kind that would easily blend into a crowd and go unnoticed. His face was devoid of expression.
Gu Changkong stood at the villa's entrance, observing this scene, a hint of displeasure flashing in his eyes.
The young man in the lead was none other than his half-brother.
Being part of a large family was not as idyllic as outsiders might imagine; it was a world filled with intrigue and deceit. One wrong move could leave you stripped to the bone.
Take his fifth brother, for example. Since his mother was a woman from the Bai family, renowned military manufacturers, he had been favored by the family since birth. His resemblance to their father, the most among the brothers, further endeared him to their father. Even the eldest brother treated him with respect, and no one dared offend him easily.
But now, his brother had suddenly paid a visit.
His intuition told him that this visit was akin to a wolf paying a visit to the chickens, and it was unlikely to be a friendly one.
Despite his suspicions, Gu Changkong still greeted his brother with open arms, laughing heartily, "Fifth Brother, what brings you to this godforsaken place? I'm surprised you have time to spare."
"Hahaha, Third Brother, I missed you, so I came to see you."
Gu Changjun smiled broadly and embraced Gu Changkong before stepping back, as if by unspoken agreement.
"Really? I'm flattered."
Gu Changkong gestured with an open hand, inviting him in. "Fifth Brother, come in and have a seat. You should have informed me beforehand; I could have made some preparations."
"Third Brother, you're too kind. We're family; there's no need for such formalities."
The two brothers chatted amiably as they walked into the house.
The middle-aged man behind them remained silent, his gaze fixed straight ahead, as if he hadn't heard a word.
Upon entering the living room, Gu Changjun surveyed the surroundings, his brows furrowing slightly.
It was said that the Outer City was spartan, and now he could see it for himself. He couldn't imagine staying here for even a day.
"Fifth Brother, would you like something to drink?"
Gu Changkong asked.
"Oh, no need. I had some on the way here." Gu Changjun smiled, "Third Brother, I came not only to visit you but also for a small favor. I was hoping you could help me with something."
Gu Changkong's heart gave a cold laugh.
Despite their long separation, his fifth brother hadn't changed a bit.
Impulsive and ambitious, he was as foolish as ever, yet he pretended to possess profound wisdom.
"Is there something I can help you with?"
He asked in surprise.
"Third Brother, what are you saying? Among our brothers, aside from our eldest brother, you are the most capable. That's why Father entrusted you with managing the Outer City, isn't it?"
"Fifth Brother, you flatter me."
Gu Changkong wasn't buying it, "Fifth Brother, what is it you need?"
"Third Brother, promise me first."
Gu Changjun smiled.
Gu Changkong shook his head.
As the seconds ticked by, the atmosphere grew tense.
Just then, the middle-aged man spoke up, "Third Young Master, it's not a big deal. The Fifth Young Master's attraction to you are here to borrow someone from you."
"Yes, yes."
Gu Changjun nodded vigorously.
"Borrow someone? Who?"
Gu Changkong's expression shifted slightly.
"It's a man called Jiang Cheng."
The middle-aged man smiled, "I heard he used to be with the Dawn Society, but after his defection, he was taken in by Third Young Master. When Fifth Young Master caught wind of this, he worried that the Dawn Society might take action. So, he came to bring this man to the Inner City, both to save Third Young Master from trouble and to protect the man from any assassination attempts by the Dawn Society."
"Exactly, exactly."
Gu Changjun nodded again, then asked, "Third Brother, do you see how I'm trying to help you?"
Gu Changkong took a deep breath, "Fifth Brother, where did you hear about this? Could it be that you heard it from that fellow with the surname Jin?"
Gu Changjun's expression became slightly unnatural.
Gu Changkong's guess was correct, although the news had passed through several hands before reaching his ears.
Ultimately, the source was indeed Jin Xinpeng.
"Oh, Third Brother, don't worry about these minor details."
He chuckled.
"If Third Brother agrees, I will be forever grateful. In the future, if there's anything Third Brother needs my help with, I will definitely not refuse!"
Gu Changkong took a few steps and shook his head, "Fifth Brother, it's not that I don't want to help you, but that man... borrowing him won't be of much use to you."
"Even now, Third Brother, you're still trying to deceive me."
Gu Changjun boasted, "Before coming, I already inquired. Within a month, he went from being completely clueless to successfully crafting a Second Rank Tranquilizing Pill. I heard he even created an Advanced Tranquilizing Pill recently, right?"
Gu Changkong's face darkened.
Jiang Cheng's creation of the Advanced Tranquilizing Pill had happened just a few days ago.
The members of the Dawn Society were unlikely to know about it.
In other words, his Fifth Brother most likely learned of this from his subordinates.
But he had no better solution for this matter, as human hearts were the most unpredictable things in the world.
"It seems I was right."
Gu Changjun's face glowed with satisfaction.
"I knew it. For Third Brother to vouch for him and even offend the Dawn Society, he must be no ordinary person."
"Third Brother, considering our good relationship, please lend me this man for a while. Once this storm passes, I'll return him to you. How about that?"
Gu Changkong really wanted to say no.
But doing so wouldn't make a difference.
Because the other party only needed to go back, sweet-talk his father, or have his mother whisper in his father's ear.
Yet, Gu Changjun was even more reluctant to let go of this hard-found talent.
As for borrowing...
Only a three-year-old would believe such a thing.
"Fifth Brother, he's not as amazing as you think. The reason he can create the Advanced Tranquilizing Pill is because he uses a lot of herbs. Anyone else could do the same."
But Gu Changjun ruthlessly exposed the truth.
"He loses money with each batch, yet you still let him continue. Doesn't that prove his exceptional abilities? I know Third Brother is reluctant, but I only need to borrow him for a while. If Third Brother still disagrees, I'll have to discuss this with Father."
