Chapter 334: Phantom Beast
Chapter 334: Phantom Beast
Qiao Sang's body suddenly stiffened, and she slowly turned her head.
Zhang Rongtang's gaze swept over, meeting hers. A smirk played on his lips, but the smile felt entirely different from the easygoing uncle image he usually projected.
A chill ran up Qiao Sang's spine, reaching the top of her head. She felt like a cat with its fur standing on end, and a curse slipped out of her mouth as she quickly jumped back a step.
It wasn't the sudden appearance of the man that frightened her so much; it was the massive familiar standing beside him.
Familiars weren't scary, and neither were Ghost-type Companion Beasts. However, seeing such a large creature, whose body blended almost perfectly with the night, with blood-red eyes staring at her and even smiling, leaving drool, was terrifying!
Just one glance almost made Qiao Sang pass out on the spot.
What kind of entrance was this?!
And you can laugh, but what's with the drooling?!
Perhaps Qiao Sang's shock was too obvious. The blood-red-eyed Ghost-type Companion Beast "sucked" in the saliva that was about to drip down to its chin.
Qiao Sang: "!!!"
Wu Chang, who often visited the graveyard, had developed a resistance to the terrifying effects of the environment. He didn't react as dramatically as Qiao Sang and Fangy.
Looking at the returning Zhang Rongtang and the towering familiar, and recalling the words, "Fortune Seeker, I've finally waited for you", Wu Chang's mind was a jumble of chaotic thoughts, mingled with panic and confusion.
Wu Chang wasn't stupid.
"Uncle Zhang, why are you back?" He forced a smile that looked more like a grimace. "And why is there a Mischief Spirit standing next to you?"
Although he had his suspicions, Wu Chang didn't want to believe this reality. He wanted to hear it from Uncle Zhang's own mouth.
Whatever Uncle Zhang said, he was willing to believe it.
In the past, Wu Chang always felt like an extra, someone his parents would pass around like a soccer ball. He couldn't understand why his parents had even brought him into the world.
His grandfather, old and alone in their hometown, was kind to him, but Wu Chang always felt that his grandfather kept him around just to have someone for company.
It could have been Wu Yi, Wu Er, Wu San, or Wu Si; it didn't have to be him, Wu Chang.
Then, he met Uncle Zhang.
Like every father in the world, Uncle Zhang would take him fishing on his bicycle, notice his discomfort immediately and take him to the hospital, give him advice on choosing a familiar, and remind him to do his homework.
Every time he returned home, the aroma of a home-cooked meal greeted him.
He still remembered the first time he met Uncle Zhang, who smiled and said, "Child, your bangs are too long. You should get them cut; otherwise, they'll be bad for your eyes."
Uncle Zhang's presence made Wu Chang finally feel like he wasn't an extra.
For a long time, he wondered why he wasn't Uncle Zhang's son.
How could such an Uncle Zhang be fake?
Wu Chang looked at Zhang Rongtang, his eyes shining with hope.
His answer came in the form of a transparent, circular device that descended from the sky.
The device landed, enveloping the Fortune Seeker, and the opening sealed itself at a visible speed.
Then, a whistling sound sliced through the air. A Mighty Flying Owl, like a cannonball, dove down, grabbing the device with its sharp talons.
The Mighty Flying Owl didn't fly away but flapped its wings and landed beside Zhang Rongtang.
"Yun Yun!" The Fortune Seeker, covered in a white chiffon cloth, continuously pounded and attacked the transparent device, but it remained unscathed, showing no signs of damage.
"I didn't want to make a move in front of you", Zhang Rongtang said calmly. "But who asked you to bring a child with a Ghost-type Companion Beast along?"
He glanced at the innocent-looking Treasure Seeker and continued, "It definitely saw the Mischief Spirit beside me. I had no choice."
"Me?!" Treasure Seeker, feeling bewildered, pointed at himself with his Short Toe.
How is this my fault?!
Although Zhang Rongtang didn't answer his question, it was clear enough. Wu Chang's eyes instantly welled up with tears, and he struggled to keep them from falling. "Uncle Zhang, why are you capturing it?"
What else! To bond with it, of course! Qiao Sang screamed internally.
Please!
This is a Fortune Seeker!
A Fortune Seeker! A legendary Phantom Beast!
A Phantom Beast, a familiar rarer than Divine Beasts. While Divine Beasts can be bred and evolved to the divine level, Phantom Beasts cannot.
Each Phantom Beast has unique Skills and Traits, making them, in a sense, even more extraordinary than Divine Beasts.
A Fortune Seeker, a Phantom Beast that can bestow good luck.
Legend has it that anyone blessed by it will see their wishes come true as long as they dare to act, and the world will conspire to help them.
There's a movie about a protagonist who, having failed in both career and love, considers jumping off a cliff. He encounters a Fortune Seeker, finds an injured Divine Beast, humiliates those who once looked down on him, marries a wealthy and beautiful woman, and achieves the pinnacle of success.
If the director hadn't done extensive research, depicting the Fortune Seeker with a transparent outline and three-eared appearance, Qiao Sang wouldn't have connected the white-clothed familiar in front of her to the legendary Phantom Beast.
Such an extraordinary familiar is definitely being captured to bond with it! Surely not just for a photo and a social media post before releasing it?
Too bad, if it weren't for this uncle, she could have taken a picture to commemorate the encounter.
A Phantom Beast, something she might never see again in her lifetime.
Qiao Sang didn't intend to join the commotion over the capture of the Fortune Seeker.
It was normal for Beastmasters to capture familiars, but they usually did so in the Hidden Realm, where wild beasts were more likely to appear. Bonding with a wild beast companion in the city was rare.
As for bonding with a Fortune Seeker, she hadn't even considered it.
One should do what they are capable of. She didn't even have the fourth page of her Beastmaster Codex, and Fangy and the others were already a handful to raise.
Lulu had wandered into their backyard and they had formed a bond.
The Fortune Seeker was different; they hadn't even exchanged a word.
Besides, even if she wanted to help out of pure kindness, she wouldn't stand a chance against Zhang Rongtang. It was best not to interfere, Qiao Sang thought, as she had no heroic inclinations.
"Capture it?" Zhang Rongtang laughed, taking the round device containing the Fortune Seeker from the Mighty Flying Owl's talons and holding it up to his eyes. "I didn't want to treat it this way, but it keeps avoiding me. I had no choice."
"Yun Yun!" The Fortune Seeker angrily attacked the device.
Zhang Rongtang stared at the Fortune Seeker with a look of exasperation, as if dealing with a troublesome child. "It's useless, this is something I—"
Before he could finish, a scorching flame suddenly struck.
"Ya Ya!"
