Chapter 333: Bold Fiend, Reveal Thyself! (Third Update)
"Jerry, if you weren't so normal-looking, I'd swear you had Giant blood like Hagrid."
Brushing the snow off his body, Ron pulled the plump Scabbers out of his pocket, checked that the rat was fine, and then turned to Jerry with a complaint.
Harry and Hermione also nodded in agreement.
Speed and quick reflexes were one thing, but the final snowball that Jerry rolled was bigger than any of theirs, and it hit them all like a home run.
Jerry laughed heartily but didn't explain, only giving Ron a meaningful look as he glanced at the rat in Ron's hand:
"Ron, your Scabbers looks much healthier, and he seems to have put on quite a bit of weight!"
"Yeah, ever since Halloween, he's been much more energetic and has a great appetite. He's even fatter now than when he was sick."
Ron lifted Scabbers, clearly delighted.
After returning from Egypt over the summer, his beloved pet rat had seemed to fall ill, refusing to eat and often shivering, growing thinner despite the special mouse tonic Ron bought from the Fantastic Beasts store in Diagon Alley.
However, for some reason, after Halloween, Scabbers suddenly recovered, eating heartily and no longer shivering. He now slept contentedly in Ron's pocket every day.
"Of course, he couldn't help but get fat. Sirius Black was thrown back into Azkaban."
Jerry knew that Scabbers had never been sick. He had just been terrified of being caught and torn apart by Sirius Black, living in constant fear.
Now that Sirius Black was back in Azkaban, Scabbers had relaxed and no longer had anything to worry about.
"Do you know what spell I used to transform Sirius Black back from his Animagus form to human form?"
As the four of them prepared to return, Jerry suddenly asked a question.
Hermione immediately raised her hand and answered:
"I know. It's the Reversal Charm, a spell that can forcibly reverse an Animagus transformation."
"That's right. And if the subject isn't an Animagus but a regular animal, the spell won't work and won't harm the animal in any way."
Jerry added.
"Jerry, why are you bringing up this spell now?"
Harry sensed something amiss and asked, puzzled.
Jerry smiled and then looked at Ron's Scabbers with a teasing tone:
"Because I suspect Ron's pet Scabbers might actually be an Animagus!"
"What?"
Harry, Ron, and Hermione were stunned.
The rat in Ron's hand also stiffened in shock.
"That's impossible. Scabbers has been with us for over a decade. You must be joking!"
Ron looked at the rat in his hand, clearly not believing it could be an Animagus.
"Why not try it and see? It won't hurt him."
Jerry shrugged and pulled out his wand from his robes.
At that moment, Scabbers, seeing Jerry's wand, tried to jump out of Ron's hand. Ron quickly grabbed the rat by the tail, but Scabbers bit him, forcing Ron to let go.
"Reveal your true form!"
Before Scabbers could run, Jerry's pre-emptive blue magic beam hit him precisely.
"I could tell you weren't human from the start, bold fiend. I will expose your true form..."
(Jerry's inner monologue)
Scabbers began to transform, as if in a sped-up time-lapse of a tree growing. First, a head emerged, followed by limbs, and finally, the body.
In a moment, the spot where Scabbers had landed was replaced by a very short, fat man with sparse, messy hair and a bald spot. He looked both sleazy and dirty.
"Good afternoon, Peter Pettigrew!"
Seeing Scabbers transform back into a human, Jerry ended his inner monologue and greeted him with a smile.
However, Peter Pettigrew clearly had no intention of responding. His small, beady eyes were filled with shock. He couldn't fathom how his disguise, which had gone undetected for twelve years, had been seen through by a young wizard, and even more, that his name had been called out.
But he didn't remain stunned for long. Once he regained his senses, he immediately turned and fled into the depths of the woods.
No way, the person in front of him wasn't just any young wizard; this was someone who could defeat Sirius Black single-handedly and come out unscathed. He wasn't an opponent, and besides, he didn't have his wand with him. Running was his best option.
"Short legs, running fast, but it's no use!"
Jerry pointed his wand and cast:
"Petrify!"
A simple Full Body Bind Curse immediately immobilized Peter Pettigrew on the spot.
Without a wand, even the most skilled witches and wizards lost about ninety percent of their combat ability.
"What's going on here?"
When Peter Pettigrew was immobilized, Harry, Ron, and Hermione finally recovered from the shock of Scabbers transforming into a human.
"Jerry, how did you know Scabbers was an Animagus, and why did you call him Peter Pettigrew? Didn't Peter Pettigrew die twelve years ago?"
Hermione asked immediately.
Jerry led Harry, Ron, and Hermione to the immobilized Peter Pettigrew and handed them the Marauder's Map, saying:
"This all started with the Marauder's Map that Fred and George gave me."
Jerry had spent a considerable amount of time studying the Marauder's Map.
The Marauder's Map could display the names and movements of everyone in the castle, regardless of whether they were invisible or had transformed into an Animagus. This feature was quite useful.
Now that he had taken out the Marauder's Map, it was clear he had already mastered its magic.
With Jerry's current level of magic, it wasn't particularly difficult to study the magical artifact created by James, Sirius Black, and Lupin during their school days.
The Marauder's Map, while seemingly magical, was actually based on a fairly simple principle.
It primarily used detection magic and a bit of Legilimency to read minds.
Each witch or wizard has their own unique magic power fluctuation. The Marauder's Map captures these fluctuations to determine the person's location within the castle.
If a witch or wizard can shield their magic power fluctuations, such as with a shielding charm like the one Jerry knows, or if they go to a place that can shield magic power fluctuations, like the Room of Requirement, the Marauder's Map won't be able to detect their position.
The reason the Marauder's Map displays the real name of every witch or wizard who enters the castle is that it reads a small portion of their thoughts, specifically the part about their name.
Of course, to create such a magical artifact, one must be extremely familiar with the entire castle. Otherwise, places the creators haven't been to won't appear on the Marauder's Map.
For example, the rooms under the Fourth Floor Trapdoor where the Philosopher's Stone was stored, and the Chamber of Secrets.
The Weasley Family Clock, which shows the location and status of family members, shares many similarities with the Marauder's Map.
