Chapter 331: You Believe Voldemort Too?
Chapter 331: You Believe Voldemort Too?
"During these eleven years, Dumbledore has been holed up at Hogwarts, protecting his students and turning it into a Utopia, the only place Voldemort dares not enter." Dugdale’s words were half-admiring, half-sarcastic.
After all, countless parents of students had been killed by the Death Eaters or had joined their ranks. The students were happy at school, but things were uncertain at home.
"From what I know, he did do some things, like forming the Order of the Phoenix", Ivan said. Dumbledore had established the secret resistance organization, the Order of the Phoenix, when Voldemort’s power began to show its true colors, rallying Resisters to combat the Death Eaters, rather than idly watching Voldemort’s rise.
Given his contact with Sirius Black, he naturally didn’t worry about the source of his information being questioned.
However, it was true that Dumbledore spent most of his time at Hogwarts as headmaster. The members of the Order of the Phoenix were mostly civilian-led Resisters, not a regular army.
Ivan speculated that, like during the Second Wizarding War, the Minister of Magic was unwilling to hand over the command of the Aurors to Dumbledore, leading to constant conflicts, which forced the old headmaster to start his own organization.
"I know the Order of the Phoenix well, after all, my father was one of Dumbledore’s close friends", Dugdale said with a dismissive sneer, continuing.
"But everyone in the magical world knows that Voldemort is the core of the Death Eaters. Without killing him, their power will only grow!"
"The best way is to set a trap or force the Dark Lord into a direct confrontation to kill him! The Ministry once planned a raid, sending fifty Aurors, but none of them returned alive!"
"At that time, where was Dumbledore? Don’t tell me he couldn’t find Voldemort’s whereabouts for eleven years", Dugdale’s face was grim. Among the dead were his closest friends.
He believed that this was largely due to Dumbledore’s inaction.
Even if Dumbledore didn’t kill Voldemort, just Openly defeating him a few times would significantly reduce the Death Eaters' cohesion.
If Voldemort were no longer invincible, the Death Eaters wouldn’t have grown to the point of rampant lawlessness.
Dugdale continued his lament.
"But that’s right, Dumbledore is the most renowned wizard in the magical world. He naturally wouldn’t risk his life in a deadly duel with Voldemort."
"Perhaps he’s planning to wait until everyone else is powerless and then step in as the savior to save everything. After all, the last time he defeated Grindelwald, he did the same."
"Indeed, the great Dumbledore, the most illustrious White Wizard of the magical world!"
Hermione opened her mouth, thinking that Professor Dumbledore wouldn’t be such a person, but she didn’t know how to counter Dugdale’s argument.
Ivan knew more, understanding that Dumbledore had delayed his confrontation with Grindelwald for five years due to the blood oath that bound them both.
However, it was indeed strange that Dumbledore had watched Voldemort grow for eleven years without acting.
Decades ago, Dumbledore dared to fight Grindelwald, who wielded the Elder Wand.
With the most powerful Wand already in his possession, why would Dumbledore fear the newly risen Voldemort?
This White Wizard, who once said that death was merely a great adventure, was certainly not afraid of death.
Could it be that Dumbledore knew Voldemort couldn’t be killed due to some reason?
Or perhaps Dumbledore knew that he couldn't keep him.
After all, Grindelwald was willing to fight to the death with Dumbledore because of their special relationship, but Voldemort had no such qualms. A wizard of this caliber could avoid battles deliberately, making it extremely difficult to capture or kill him.
This might be the reason why Voldemort, who claimed to be more powerful than any living wizard, was suspected by many to have harbored a deep fear of Dumbledore.
These thoughts flashed through Ivan's mind, but he did not voice them, keeping his doubts to himself. He shouldn't know this much.
After venting for a while, Dugdale calmed down and spoke.
"During Voldemort's most powerful period, St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries could not escape the fate of treating Aurors and the Dark Lord's resistors. They organized a total of seven large-scale offensives throughout the year. Over a hundred medical personnel and more than four hundred patients were severely injured or killed. By the time of the seventh offensive, fewer than fifty people were still capable of fighting!"
Dugdale's tone was filled with sorrow as he had witnessed too many tragic scenes and farewells.
Some people, despite their severe injuries, continued to fight on the front lines. Others who were joking with them yesterday had become cold names on the list of casualties today.
Despair without hope almost enveloped the entire St. Mungo's Hospital. Everyone knew they likely wouldn't survive the next attack.
"During that battle, I was captured by a Death Eater!" Dugdale recalled, shuddering involuntarily. "They tortured me for a whole day, trying to make me join them and work for the Dark Lord!"
So, you surrendered?
Ivan looked at Dugdale, not saying it outright, but his gaze betrayed his thoughts.
"Of course not!" Dugdale said irritably, then sighed.
"But the next day, the Dark Lord came to me himself! He told me that the Death Eaters had suffered heavy losses in their attacks on St. Mungo's Hospital, which greatly angered him. His patience was worn thin, and he was preparing to break through the hospital himself. Only a massacre could quench his fury! He would kill everyone there, whether resistors or innocents, without leaving a single person alive!"
Dugdale couldn't help but recall the scene at the time. St. Mungo's Hospital could no longer withstand another attack, let alone one led by Voldemort himself.
And there were his friends, over a hundred wizards who had lost their ability to fight, and his father.
"The Dark Lord promised that if I joined the Death Eaters, he would not kill anyone after conquering St. Mungo's Hospital. All the people inside would be left to my disposal", Dugdale said.
"You believed Voldemort?" Ivan frowned. Wasn't Dugdale worried that the Dark Lord would change his mind and kill everyone anyway?
Dugdale shook his head and explained.
"He had no choice! In the war against the resistors and Aurors, the Death Eaters also suffered heavy casualties. The Dark Lord needed many wizards skilled in healing magic, and no one else could control St. Mungo's Hospital except me. That's why the Death Eaters didn't kill me."
(PS: Dugdale didn't know that a wizard of Voldemort's caliber was very difficult to deal with. In his view, Dumbledore had defeated Grindelwald and ended the wizarding war, and he could do the same to Voldemort and the Death Eaters. That's why he complained about Dumbledore's inaction.)
