Chapter 330: Threats and Bonuses (Third Update)
Chapter 330: Threats and Bonuses (Third Update)
Rita Skeeter, the most famous female reporter for the Daily Prophet, was known for always finding some extremely valuable news and writing articles that often sold very well.
However, Jerry knew that only a quarter of what this female reporter wrote was true, while the other three-quarters were fabricated to attract attention.
So when Fudge mentioned the reporter's name, he immediately became wary.
Sure enough, as he had suspected, the reporter had fabricated a series of gossip stories about him, creating three fictional girlfriends for him.
Worse still, they weren't ordinary people: one was a Giant he had encountered by chance, another was a childhood friend who was a Blood-Cursed Orc, and the third was a young witch from his school.
If the newspaper published the content as written tomorrow, it would definitely be explosive news. Everyone loved gossip, especially about geniuses. But if that happened, the carefully crafted persona he had built would be completely ruined!
He needed to be seen as a talented individual with the potential to become a great witch like Dumbledore, not a genius witch with peculiar tastes and a reputation for being a playboy.
"Mr. Carmen, please return my notebook. You have no right to take it!"
Seeing Jerry use magic to take her notebook, Rita's face changed, and her attitude immediately turned sour.
"Then it seems you have no right to fabricate these stories, either."
Jerry smiled but did not return the notebook.
Rita narrowed her eyes at this:
"What fabrication? Those are the facts you told me during the interview. And they will be in tomorrow's newspaper. No problem, you can keep the notebook. I've already memorized the content!"
"Aren't you afraid I'll tell Minister Fudge and Headmaster Dumbledore about this?"
Jerry pointed to Dumbledore and Fudge, who were still chatting at the desk.
Rita covered her mouth and laughed:
"Mr. Carmen, you're still too young. What will it matter if you tell them? If I want to, the content will still be in tomorrow's newspaper. As long as I haven't broken the law, they can't do anything to me!"
All she cared about was whether the news was explosive enough and whether she could earn more Galleons. Everything else was irrelevant.
After all, she had become famous for a book titled "Armando Dippet: Master or Moron?" and had written about the former Headmaster of Hogwarts without hesitation.
Moreover, she had also written articles criticizing the Ministry of Magic for its lax security, which allowed Sirius Black to escape. She wasn't afraid of Jerry's threats now.
Jerry didn't show any frustration; instead, he took a couple of steps forward, placed the notebook in Rita's hand, and leaned in close to her ear:
"I mean, your Animagus ability, turning into a beetle to eavesdrop on gossip. It seems you haven't registered this with the Ministry of Magic, have you? If I expose this, do you think the Ministry will arrest you and end your career as a journalist?"
With that, Jerry gracefully walked towards where Fudge and Dumbledore were.
Rita's eyes widened, and she immediately grabbed Jerry's arm, her attitude doing a complete 180-degree turn as she smiled and said:
"Mr. Carmen, don't be hasty. We can talk this out. If you think there are any changes needed in tomorrow's report, just let me know, and I'll make the changes to your satisfaction!"
Rita didn't know how Jerry had discovered her secret, which she had never told anyone. But she understood that if this secret was revealed, her career would likely be over, and she would face legal action from the Ministry of Magic.
Jerry knew the difference between having a full meal and a feast. Right now, it was more important to secure his job.
This news was already explosive enough on its own, even without the added sensationalism.
Jerry smiled and patted Rita's shoulder.
"As long as you write the truth, I won’t say anything out of line."
With that, Jerry moved Rita's hand away and returned to his desk, standing beside Snape.
Fudge, seeing Jerry approach, said half-jokingly:
"Oh, it looks like the interview is finally over, and I can go home to sleep!"
"Yes, Mr. Carmen has explained everything clearly. Everyone will know about Sirius Black’s capture by tomorrow morning. We can go home now."
Rita hurried over with the photographer, worried that Jerry might say something that could harm her.
But Jerry only smiled and didn’t say much more.
In truth, as long as Rita didn’t cause trouble, he wouldn’t expose anything. After all, it would be hard to explain why he knew about Rita’s Animagus secret.
However, if she did cause trouble, he wouldn’t go to the Ministry of Magic to expose her. Instead, he would send her straight to Merlin. He had too many ways to kill her without the Ministry of Magic finding out.
"Professor Snape, the reward?"
Seeing Fudge and Rita heading towards the fireplace, Jerry nudged Professor Snape and whispered a reminder.
Snape, who knew Jerry well, immediately understood and cleared his throat before asking Fudge, who was about to step into the fireplace:
"Minister Fudge, according to the Ministry of Magic’s previous bounty, Jerry should receive ten thousand Galleons. When will it be paid out?"
Fudge’s short, stocky body froze, and he turned his head with a strained smile.
"Oh, right, I almost forgot about that. The Ministry of Magic will send ten thousand Galleons to Gringotts and deposit it into Mr. Carmen’s vault tomorrow."
He hadn’t forgotten; he just hoped to get away without paying. After all, ten thousand Galleons was a significant amount.
But it seemed his plan didn’t work.
"Thank you, Minister Fudge. You know, Jerry is an orphan, and this reward is quite important to him!"
Snape, expressionless, added this explanation for Jerry.
Jerry, standing nearby, silently gave his head of house a thumbs up.
"If he weren’t the English Quidditch team’s Seeker, I might have believed that!"
Fudge muttered to himself, but on the surface, he replied with a generous tone:
"That’s what Mr. Carmen deserves, and the Ministry of Magic always keeps its word. Ten thousand Galleons is a small amount, really!"
With that, he grabbed a handful of Floo powder and disappeared in a burst of flames.
Seeing that Fudge and the others had left, Snape glanced at Jerry.
"Alright, Jerry, it’s late. Go get some rest."
"Thank you, Professor!"
Jerry chuckled, bid farewell to Dumbledore and the other professors, and left the headmaster’s office.
In just a few hours, he had earned ten thousand Galleons. Once his magic books were released, he would earn even more. For the foreseeable future, he wouldn’t have to worry about Galleons.
