Chapter 330: He Hangguang is Arrested
Chapter 330: He Hangguang is Arrested
After finishing her afternoon tea, Lu Jiaxin returned home, while Wang Yadan, who did not skip work, headed back to the office diligently. Her colleagues noticed the bag she was carrying and, full of envy, approached her to touch it. "Sister Dan, that's the latest Donkey brand bag; it costs over 20,000!"
Wang Yadan smiled and replied, "Miss Lu gave me this bag. Not only is she smart and beautiful, but she's also friendly and generous. Our boss is so lucky to have her!"
One of the female staff members commented sourly, "She's really good at playing her cards, buying you an expensive bag to keep you happy and in the boss's good graces."
Wang Yadan glanced at her and said, "Miss Lu used her own card to buy it."
"How is that possible? How could she have that kind of money?"
Wang Yadan implied, "Although Miss Lu is from the mainland, she's very capable. She started her own business at the age of fifteen while still studying, and had already made millions before coming to Hong Kong. She could become a billionaire all on her own, without relying on the boss."
This statement helped clear Lu Jiaxin's name, letting everyone know that she was highly capable and not just a kept woman of Nie Zhan.
Lu Jiaxin was unaware of these rumors, and even if she had been, she wouldn't have cared. What others said was their business; she only needed to focus on her own affairs.
That evening, Nie Zhan called her and apologized as soon as he was on the phone. "Sorry, I stood you up again. Did you wait long?"
Lu Jiaxin brushed it off as a minor issue and asked, "How is your grandfather doing? I hope it's nothing serious."
Nie Zhan shook his head. "He just twisted his foot while walking in the garden. Thankfully, someone was there to support him. The doctor said he'll be fine after some rest."
"In that case, you should find a good traditional Chinese medicine doctor," Lu Jiaxin advised. "If it's not serious, one session of Tui Na massage should do the trick. There should be some skilled TCM doctors specializing in orthopedics in Hong Kong, right?"
Nie Zhan wasn't very familiar with traditional Chinese medicine, but Lu Jiaxin's confidence made him curious. "Is TCM really that effective?"
Lu Jiaxin thought for a moment before replying, "Do you remember how I looked when I sold that ancient painting to you through Secretary Wang? I was thin and sickly, with a pale complexion. But after half a year of treatment, when I stood in front of Secretary Wang again, she couldn't even recognize me."
Nie Zhan immediately said, "I'll ask someone to look into it."
Before they could say much more, Lu Jiaxin heard someone calling Nie Zhan. "Go ahead and take care of your work. I'm off to do some yoga. I ate a bit too much today, so I'll need to work it off."
She was currently at her ideal weight and in good shape, so she wanted to maintain her current condition without gaining or losing weight.
Nie Zhan, who rarely interfered in her affairs, simply said, "Don't overdo it, and make sure to get enough rest tonight."
Lu Jiaxin found this amusing. "You're the one who should be hearing that. I go to bed before 10 p.m. every day, but you're always working late. Staying up late not only damages your health but also makes you more prone to hair loss."
After saying this, she deliberately added, "You're already ten years older than me. If you don't take care of yourself, people might mistake us for father and daughter when we go out together."
Nie Zhan couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time. At twenty-seven, he was in the prime of his life, yet she had him feeling almost anxious about his age. "Don't worry, that day will never come."
Seeing the smile on Nie Zhan's face, Nie Jingwen knew he must have just gotten off the phone with his girlfriend. "You two have been dating for quite a while now. Don't you think it's time to bring her home to meet Grandpa?"
Nie Zhan immediately rejected the idea. "If I bring her home, who knows what kind of rumors the media will cook up. That would put a lot of pressure on her. She wants to focus on her studies for now, so we'll hold off on meeting Grandpa until after she graduates from university."
She had just entered university, so graduation seemed a long way off. However, seeing how considerate he was, Nie Jingwen thought highly of Lu Jiaxin's abilities, believing that she must be quite something to have won over his usually aloof younger brother.
Early in the morning, Lu Jiaxin went for a run and returned an hour later, drenched in sweat. As she sat down, she received a call from Su Heyuan.
"What? He Hangguang has been arrested?"
Su Heyuan confirmed with a solemn "Yes." "He was taken into custody in the middle of the night yesterday."
"What did he do?" Lu Jiaxin asked.
"Murder," Su Heyuan replied.
After inquiring further, Lu Jiaxin learned that He Hangguang had been with his girlfriend the previous day. The two of them had gotten into an argument and even come to blows, after which his girlfriend had fallen from the balcony. She was currently in critical condition.
"This is a case of murder," Su Heyuan explained. "Unless they find conclusive evidence that he didn't do it, it will be difficult for him to escape punishment."
Lu Jiaxin remained calm and said, "Without concrete evidence that he committed the murder, and given the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty,' he may eventually be acquitted."
Su Heyuan knew that the legal system in Hong Kong was different from that of the mainland, but he felt that He Hangguang would likely face justice this time.
Later, around ten o'clock in the morning, Lu Jiaxin saw a magazine that had been delivered, featuring an article about He Hangguang's arrest. The Hong Kong media enjoyed freedom of speech, so their words could be sharp and sometimes even scathing. This particular magazine article called He Hangguang a violent maniac and a murderer, and it didn't hold back on insulting the entire He family.
Lu Jiaxin handed the article to the three bodyguards beside her, and after they had finished reading it, she asked for their opinions. "What do you guys think about this?"
Zong Jinghua was the first to speak up. "The He family has a strong team of lawyers, so He Hangguang will likely be acquitted."
In Hong Kong, there was nothing money couldn't accomplish. If something couldn't be done, it simply meant that not enough money had been offered.
Qian Xiaoxiao chimed in, "Brother Gu, Brother Zong, we can't let him get off scot-free. Only when the He family is behind bars will Sister Xin be truly safe."
Lu Jiaxin thought to herself that she would only be truly safe if the He family went bankrupt.
Zong Jinghua didn't refute Qian Xiaoxiao's statement. The He family was indeed a threat, and with He Hangxuan dead, the second son, a doctor with no business sense, was left in charge. If He Hangguang were also incarcerated, the He family would be finished, and they wouldn't need to worry about them anymore.
Gu Wenfeng offered a more neutral opinion. "Let's wait and see what the police investigation concludes."
As noon approached, Mei Gu called, sounding anxious. "Miss Lu, the young master has been arrested for intentional homicide. Have you seen the news?"
Lu Jiaxin acknowledged that she had. "Uncle Su called me this morning to tell me. Aunt Mei, was He Hangguang violent when he was younger?"
"No, the young master never hit or scolded the servants. Oh, but he did keep a cat and a dog as pets when he was little, but they both died of illnesses. After that, he never kept any more pets."
Indeed, Lu Jiaxin had never heard about this before, and it was possible that the changes in his family situation had made him more irritable. Still, this had nothing to do with her.
"Miss Lu," Mei Gu continued, "the old madam has been asking about you these past few days. She misses you."
Lu Jiaxin explained, "I've been busy lately, but I'll come over to visit Auntie and Haifan this afternoon."
Mei Gu was delighted to hear this. "Miss Lu, why don't you stay for dinner as well?"
"Okay," Lu Jiaxin agreed.
