Chapter 329: The Disappearing Friend
Chapter 329: The Disappearing Friend
In Professor Victoria's Arithmetic Divination class, she began by teaching the students about the unique personalities and colors associated with numbers 1 to 9. According to the professor, every number had its own distinct characteristics and was linked to different shapes. Furthermore, any object, person's name, or destiny could be converted into corresponding numbers, which were then interpreted using a series of theories.
She also taught the students how to interpret their own names. First, they would convert the letters into numbers, and then, through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, they would derive three significant numbers: the personality number, the soul number, and the social number.
For Vold, these calculations were a breeze, as they never exceeded two-digit numbers. He quickly added and subtracted, obtaining his three numbers:
[Behavior driven by relentless imagination and a strong sense of curiosity, seeking truth and fantasy, and possessing extraordinary creativity.]
[Struggles to establish close social relationships, dislikes complex social activities, and tends to live in a world of thoughts...]
Was this astrology or a personality test?
Vold fell silent for a while, contemplating the results of his "divination."
At that moment, Professor Victoria approached and glanced at Vold's calculations. She silently calculated in her mind and then smiled faintly.
"Your calculations are correct," she said, "but in reality, the social number is not always constant throughout our lives. To accurately interpret these numbers, we need to consider the current celestial phenomena and time."
"Of course, this is what we will learn in the future. You're doing very well so far, and I'm satisfied."
After speaking, Professor Victoria nodded at Vold and moved on to check Michael's results.
Michael nervously revealed his parchment. Vold leaned over to take a look and was rendered speechless.
Michael's interpretation of himself was as follows:
[A resolute and courageous warrior, with poor communication skills, who prefers to act alone and be suspicious. He will achieve great success in politics and become a dictatorial leader who loves to give orders.]
Not a single trait matched Michael's personality.
Professor Victoria also mentally calculated and couldn't help but laugh at Michael's mistake.
"You made a beginner's mistake, Mr. Michael," she said with a smile. "The letter M corresponds to the number 4, not 5."
Michael looked down and realized his error. He apologized to the professor, his face turning red, and then he became serious, leaning over his desk to recalculate.
For Vold, the entire class felt like a simple number game, as the calculations never exceeded two digits. Nonetheless, his classmates frequently made mistakes. Professor Victoria, however, demonstrated great patience, guiding each student individually without losing her temper at anyone's foolish errors.
At the end of the class, Professor Victoria assigned a straightforward homework task: to interpret the names of three acquaintances using arithmetic divination.
Michael immediately had an idea and said on the way back, "Vold, let me borrow your interpretation from class. I'll also ask Hermione for her results later, so I only need to interpret one more person's name, and my workload will be reduced by two-thirds!"
"I don't mind lending it to you," Vold replied. "But aren't you worried about failing the exam?"
"Don't worry," Michael assured him. "I've noted down the key points and the symbolism of the numbers. I'm just too lazy to calculate them over and over again."
After Michael finished speaking, he went to find Hermione to borrow her time-turner, but after searching for a while, he couldn't find the girl with the curly, unruly hair.
There were only a few students in the corridor.
"That's strange, how did Hermione, who's so noticeable, disappear in an instant... Vold, did you see where she went? Vold?"
Michael turned around, only to realize that Vold was also missing.
He stood there in a daze, looked around, and saw Theodore Nott passing by with a gloomy expression.
"Michael?"
Just as Michael was feeling perplexed, someone patted him on the shoulder from behind. He turned around and saw that it was Vold.
Vold seemed to have just come out from a side corridor, and he suddenly had a strange, cheap scent on him. He yawned lazily, as if he hadn't fully woken up yet.
"Why are you standing there? Let's go," Vold said.
"Oh... okay."
Michael followed, feeling that he had understood something, yet it was also beyond comprehension.
...
When Michael went to find Hermione, Vold, unnoticed by others, took a step back and hid behind a statue in the corridor to block others' line of sight. He then turned the time-turner back twice.
The sensation of traveling through the time tunnel reappeared, and the flashy scene made his head spin. Vold steadied himself and saw that the corridor was now empty.
The morning light, slightly chilly, streamed through the windows, making the corridor feel lonely and desolate.
Vold didn't linger either. He summoned his broomstick with the Summoning Charm and flew back to his dormitory for a nap. When the time approached 9 o'clock, he flew directly to the North Tower on his broomstick.
As he flew through the window and landed in the corridor, Vold heard a cheerful voice shouting, "March! Gentlemen and lady, forward! Forward!"
Vold leaned his broomstick against the wall, and a house-elf would soon return it to his dormitory.
He quickly smoothed his wind-tousled hair and followed the direction of the voice. He saw Harry and the others climbing the spiral staircase, panting heavily as if they were about to collapse.
In the painting beside them, there was a short, stout knight in armor riding a dark gray pony, waving vigorously, "Farewell, my comrades! If you need noble hearts and steel muscles, don't forget to call for Sir Cadogan!"
Harry and his friends were too tired to speak and just watched as the knight in the painting left. Then, they saw Vold walking up from below the staircase.
"Good morning, everyone!" Vold greeted them cheerfully.
The Divination classroom was hidden, and only when it was time for class would the trapdoor in the ceiling open, lowering a silver ladder. They had to climb up the ladder to reach their classroom.
The room was dimly lit even during the day, with curtains drawn and numerous dark red candles lit, covered by red lantern covers, casting an irritating scarlet glow over the entire room.
The room was filled with circular tables and armchairs, resembling a poorly managed vintage tea room. The shelves on the walls were packed with divination tools like crystal balls and tea sets.
It was unclear what kind of incense Professor Trelawney had burned in the fireplace, but the room was filled with a sickly sweet scent that made one feel sleepy.
However, some people found this environment wonderful, filled with a mystical and ancient aura—like Parvati's sister, Padma, who was looking at a dusty crystal ball in the corner with a mix of anticipation and envy.
