Chapter 329: Ron's Train of Thought
Chapter 329: Ron's Train of Thought
After drinking the lemonade in Dumbledore's office, Kyle was ready to leave.
It wasn't the weekend yet, and he still had classes to attend. Plus, it seemed like Dumbledore had other important matters to attend to. Just as Kyle opened the door to leave, Fawkes disappeared from the office before him.
As for the box containing the Basilisk...it remained untouched in its original spot.
Kyle didn't plan to take it with him, so he simply closed the door and departed.
Overnight, the atmosphere in the castle transformed completely. Even on the eighth floor, Kyle could faintly hear the continuous cheers of celebration resonating through the halls.
Everyone seemed to be rejoicing over the resolution of the Chamber of Secrets incident.
On his way down the stairs, Kyle ran into Harry.
Harry had intended to sneak into the headmaster's office with the professors but was caught by Professor McGonagall.
"Kyle, it's about time you showed up," Harry waved at him.
Kyle walked over and said, "Classes will start soon. What are you still doing here...I don't think the professors plan to celebrate by giving us a holiday."
"I know, something happened, and I encountered Mr. Malfoy," Harry explained.
He grinned and added, "Also, Dobby really wants to thank you."
A house-elf poked its head out from behind Harry.
"Sir, you liberated Dobby!" its voice was shrill with excitement. "Dobby is a free house-elf!"
"What happened? I don't recall doing anything," Kyle smiled and replied. "I just caught a diary with a glove, that's all."
A smile suddenly blossomed on Dobby's face. "That's it, sir! The master gave Dobby a piece of clothing, and now Dobby is free!"
"Congratulations," Kyle rummaged in his Chameleonic Charm Bag and fished out a few licorice wands from a corner. "I don't have anything else on me, so please accept these as a gift."
"It's all because of you, sir!" Dobby exclaimed, its hands flailing as it accepted the licorice wands, almost on the verge of tears. "You not only saved Dobby but also gave me a gift...You're as great as Harry Potter!"
"Don't say that, I really didn't do much," Kyle shook his head repeatedly. "It was all Mr. Malfoy. If he had caught the diary the first time, there wouldn't have been an issue with the glove."
"No, sir..." Dobby protested.
The three of them stood there on the stairs of the eighth floor.
Dobby continued to express his gratitude, while Kyle kept declining the praise, refusing to accept the credit.
By his side, Harry witnessed this exchange, and his admiration for Kyle grew.
Kyle was not only smart and powerful but also humble...No wonder so many people liked him.
Unaware of Harry's thoughts, Kyle felt that Dobby was getting a little too fixated on the matter, so he decided to change the subject. "Dobby, what are your plans from now on?"
Hearing this question, Dobby finally stopped thanking him and happily replied, "Sir, Dobby wants to find a job with pay."
"That's a good idea," Kyle said as he considered the elf. "If you need help, you can find me during the holidays in St. Kachibor Village."
Dobby's eyes lit up, and he asked excitedly, "Sir, do you want to give Dobby a job?"
"If you need one," Kyle clarified.
"Dobby is willing to work for you, sir!"
"Not for me," Kyle shook his head. With school and his own commitments, not to mention Chris and Diana being rarely home, he had no need for a house-elf.
He was thinking of sending Dobby to Newt.
Newt was almost a hundred years old. While he could manage his daily life, taking care of the fantastic beasts was clearly a strain on him. Having a house-elf assistant would undoubtedly make his life much easier.
"Sir, your friends must all be kind-hearted people. Dobby is willing to work for them."
"Alright then."
A few minutes later, Kyle handed a letter to Dobby, who immediately left, eager to begin his new journey.
He must be off to apply for the job, Kyle thought.
After Dobby's disappearance, Harry asked curiously, "Did you write the address of the Burrow?"
Kyle nodded. "Yes, that's where I sent him."
The two of them descended the stairs, preparing to head to class.
Along the way, Harry hesitated, as if he wanted to say something. He couldn't shake the feeling that Dobby might not be a good fit for the Burrow.
Although Ron had once mentioned that Mrs. Weasley had always wanted a house-elf, Harry could tell that she genuinely enjoyed taking care of her family. Dobby's presence might take away her joy in doing so.
Before Harry could voice his thoughts, he saw Ron running towards them.
"You're alright!" Harry exclaimed with relief.
"Professor McGonagall said that I was attacked by a petrification curse, not the monster in the Chamber of Secrets. She just lifted the curse on me," Ron explained, looking a bit dejected. "It's a shame...I mean, if I could've stayed petrified a little longer, I might've gotten out of taking exams."
Kyle paused in his tracks, thinking he must have misheard.
This guy would rather be attacked than take exams? Ron's way of thinking was truly unique.
That evening, Hagrid returned, and Hogwarts held a grand feast to celebrate. Fred and George bought all of Zonko's fireworks, and the celebration continued late into the night.
"This is fantastic, it can't get any better than this," Ron said with his mouth full of chicken legs. "And we're getting a house-elf too. I bet it's a much better cook than Mom."
Harry opened his mouth to disagree, wanting to say that Mrs. Weasley's cooking was better than the school's, but his words were drowned out by the explosion of fireworks.
As Harry watched Ron's excited expression, his earlier thoughts resurfaced.
Would Mrs. Weasley really let Dobby stay?
...
In fact, Harry was right to be concerned.
A month before the holidays, Kyle received a letter from Mrs. Weasley.
In the letter, she explained that ever since Dobby had arrived, she felt so bored that she was starting to go moldy. Every day, she had nothing to do, and even when she wanted to water the potatoes in the garden, she had to do it secretly, afraid to make any noise.
"All I can do is water the potatoes," she wrote. "I can't even dig up the rotten potatoes and plant new seeds...because by the time I decide to do it, the house-elf has already finished all the work."
Mrs. Weasley regretted her decision and wanted to ask Kyle if there was a gentle way to fire Dobby without hurting his feelings.
Kyle could only express his apologies in his reply and comfort Mrs. Weasley, asking her to hold on for one more month. Once the school holidays began, he would take Dobby to work for Newt.
Mrs. Weasley agreed.
