Chapter 325: A Gift for Hagrid (First Update)
Chapter 325: A Gift for Hagrid (First Update)
However, Jerry knew that this eccentric professor, who appeared to be a madwoman on the surface, actually had some talent—albeit a small fraction of it.
After all, the famous prophecy "only one will live" came from her mouth, and it did indeed come true in the end.
But that was not her usual level of skill. Her usual level was probably that out of a hundred divinations, not one, or at best, very few, would come true.
Jerry had previously looked up information about this professor. Although her divination skills were not great, she was indeed quite good at passing down the knowledge of divination.
She was the great-great-granddaughter of the renowned seer Cassandra Trelawney, who was a witch born with the ability to foresee the future. The prophecies made by seers are recorded by the Ministry of Magic and stored in the Department of Mysteries' Hall of Prophecies.
If you haven't heard of Cassandra Trelawney, you must be familiar with the name Gellert Grindelwald, as he was also a seer. In 1927, he predicted the upcoming Second World War of the Muggles.
Therefore, Jerry thought it would be worth listening to her classes for reference. If he really wanted to master divinations that could predict decades into the future, he would need to do his own research over time.
Or, he could wait until he obtained the "Dream" card and then delve into it more thoroughly.
"So, you have chosen to take Divination, the most profound of all magical arts. I must warn you, if you lack insight, there is nothing I can do. In this field, books can only teach you so much..."
After having the class open their textbooks, The Misty Veil of the Future, Professor Trelawney began to set the stage.
Jerry understood that divination was a deep and complex art, and if students failed to learn it, it was not the fault of the books or her teaching, but rather their lack of aptitude and talent.
This was a preemptive way of shifting the blame, as most students who took her class would not learn divination by the time they graduated.
Beside Jerry, Hermione looked very surprised when she heard that the textbook was of little help. In her view, books were always crucial for any subject.
She had been able to study more efficiently in class because she had spent time previewing and memorizing the textbook beforehand.
"Today, we will start with the basics of divination, specifically tealeaf reading. Please turn to pages five and six, and then work in pairs to interpret the readings."
After scaring a few timid young wizards with some fabricated prophecies, Professor Trelawney began the formal lesson.
Three hours later, Jerry closed his textbook and sighed inwardly:
"It really has no logic at all. Looks like it will take some time!"
He had not found any logical or magical principles in Professor Trelawney's explanations. It seemed to be purely based on the characteristics of certain objects and some form of intuition.
At least, he couldn't sense anything at the moment.
"I think Divination is just a mess. She's just making random guesses!"
Hermione put away her book and complained outright.
Clearly, she felt that this form of divination, which relied on observing the characteristics of objects and using a sixth sense, was nothing more than random guessing, unlike arithmancy, which was based on concrete calculations.
After the morning elective, the afternoon session began with the regular core classes.
The core classes for third year included Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, and a new addition: Care of Magical Creatures.
This afternoon, Gryffindor and Slytherin had their first Care of Magical Creatures class, taught by their Gamekeeper, Hagrid.
The lesson focused on understanding the highly polite nature of Hippogriffs, befriending them, and taking a ride around the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest.
The entire process went smoothly, except for when Malfoy made an impolite remark and was attacked by a Hippogriff. However, Jerry, who was well-prepared, deflected the attack with a Shield Charm.
After the lesson, Jerry stayed behind instead of returning to the castle with everyone else.
"Jerry, thank you so much! If a student had been injured on the first day, I would have been a complete failure as a teacher!"
Hagrid, with his large, fan-like hands, held Jerry's shoulder, his eyes filled with guilt and gratitude. He had been both nervous and very serious about his first lesson as a teacher, and it almost ended in disaster. If not for Jerry's quick reflexes, he might have lost his job today.
Jerry smiled and shook his head, then pulled out a small box from his wizard robe:
"In my opinion, Hagrid, you are one of the best Care of Magical Creatures experts in the world. Today was just an accident, and it wasn't your fault.
By the way, I stayed behind to give you something. I bought it in Greece by chance, and I think you'll like it!"
Although Hagrid was a half-Giant standing over four meters tall, he had a truly wonderful personality, being very warm and kind. He had helped Jerry a lot, such as with professional knowledge about Fantastic Beasts, the Fire Dragon Norbert, the Nightmare, and the Three-Headed Dog.
So Jerry decided to give him a small gift in return.
"These are Chimera and Sphinx cubs!"
Hagrid opened the small box and immediately let out a cry of surprise.
Inside the box, he saw two Fantastic Beast cubs. One had a lion's head, a goat's body, and a Fire Dragon's tail, while the other had a giant eagle's front limbs, wings, and head, with a lion's body, hind legs, and tail.
These were the famous Greek Fantastic Beasts, the Chimera and the Sphinx.
"I'll leave them with you. I have to go now!"
Jerry declined Hagrid's enthusiastic invitation to dinner and reminded him not to tell anyone about the Chimera and Sphinx cubs. Then, he waved goodbye and left.
Unlike Fire Dragons, which are restricted by the Ministry of Magic from being privately raised, the box containing the cubs had an Undetectable Extension Charm, which the Ministry does not allow to be created privately.
However, Hagrid was the type who didn't like following rules too strictly, so Jerry wasn't worried that he would find anything amiss. He was more concerned that Hagrid's big mouth might not keep the secret for long.
"Alright, tonight I'll head to the Room of Requirement to seal the soul in Ravenclaw's Diadem, then go to the Ministry of Magic in London to get a magic car, and also meditate. Looks like I'll be spending a lot of red stars!
But, sealing Voldemort's soul in the Diadem should earn me a good number of red stars!"
On the way back to the castle for dinner, Jerry began planning his activities for the evening.
