Chapter 323: Patrol Duty
Chapter 323: Patrol Duty
On the 7th of June, at 6 a.m., Chen Chuan received a notification from the Processing Bureau and promptly put on the uniform they had provided. After getting ready, he left the Mystic Palace Tower.
At 6:30 a.m., an armed patrol vehicle from the Processing Bureau arrived and stopped a short distance away from him. The door slid open, and someone inside beckoned him to get in.
Chen Chuan climbed in and quickly scanned the interior. In the front, the driver was seated, and beside them, in the passenger seat, was a logistics staff member wearing an auxiliary uniform. Both individuals nodded at him but remained silent.
In the spacious rear compartment, there was only one young person, around eighteen or nineteen years old, also dressed in the Processing Bureau's uniform. This individual had sharp eyes and, after a glance at Chen Chuan, took the initiative to speak. "Sun Rao."
Chen Chuan nodded. "Chen Chuan."
After he found a seat and closed the door, Sun Rao spoke. "I know you." He paused. "I'm also a sponsored Wu Yi trainee, and I joined the Processing Bureau half a year before you."
"So, you're Senior Sun," Chen Chuan said.
Sun Rao looked at him again and said, "Your thoughts seem different from mine. I thought you'd be a very proud person."
"Why do you think that, Senior?" Chen Chuan asked.
"Because I've seen many outstanding individuals with such traits," Sun Rao replied. As he spoke, the vehicle beneath them started again, and he glanced outside. "Junior Chen, it seems like you haven't been on patrol duty before?"
"That's correct," Chen Chuan admitted.
"Your fighting skills are impressive, but patrol duty is a different matter," Sun Rao said. "Some things can't be resolved by force alone. This time, the Bureau has assigned me as the team leader, so during the operation, my decisions will take precedence. If you have any opinions, you can bring them up after the patrol, but I hope you'll cooperate with me during the execution."
"I will," Chen Chuan assured him.
He agreed with Sun Rao's words; consistency in action was crucial during missions. As a team, they needed a leader, and he was more than willing to follow the arrangements of someone with experience.
Sun Rao, seeing that he understood, said, "You're easier to deal with than An Cheng."
"An Cheng?" Chen Chuan asked.
"Another sponsored student," Sun Rao explained. "I can tell that your words match your thoughts, but if An Cheng were here, he might agree verbally, but his actions could be unpredictable."
Chen Chuan understood; Senior An was the type of person with an inner sense of pride.
Sun Rao continued, "Today's patrol duty is actually related to Wei Wusheng's case. There are two fighters in this area..." As he spoke, he first added Chen Chuan as a contact and then sent two profiles through the Boundary Token.
Chen Chuan took a look; the profiles immediately appeared on the Boundary Token. One was a muscular man with short hair, around twenty years old, full of vitality. The other was a woman whose physique was no less impressive than the man's, with muscles on her arms that looked ready to burst.
These two seemed vaguely familiar, and indeed, he had seen them before—they were the spectators on the Rhino Number who had watched the fight with him and had both been knocked down by him.
"Our focus for today's patrol is in Yinglu District," Sun Rao said. "Currently, only these two individuals from that day are in this area, but they've been refusing the Bureau's protection and surveillance."
"Tong Daguang is the leader of the Swordfish Gang, and Zhe Rong is from the Tuo Li Martial Arts Academy. Perhaps because they always have people protecting them, Wei Wusheng hasn't come after them yet."
Chen Chuan's mind raced, but he didn't think that was necessarily the case. He had reviewed previous cases, including the earliest victim, a martial arts academy attacked during the Great Expansion Era, when they were still unaware of Wei Wusheng. In a later incident, a victim was an individual serving as a security captain for a company, killed despite being well-equipped and surrounded by teammates.
This indicated that Wei Wusheng's choice of targets didn't seem to be based on the level of security.
Sun Rao continued, "Since most of the remaining fighters are in Depth Wu, Wuding, and Jiyang Districts, those areas are the Bureau's defensive priorities, and most of their resources are focused there.
"Our task is to keep an eye on these two individuals in Yinglu District. If we encounter Wei Wusheng, we must find a way to stop him and promptly notify the Bureau."
He then asked, "Did you bring a gun?"
"Yes, I did," Chen Chuan replied.
"A gun you bought yourself? Let me see it," Sun Rao requested.
Chen Chuan produced the "Thunderbolt" pistol.
Sun Rao's eyes widened in surprise as he exclaimed, "The Thunderbolt from Dragon Roar Company?"
Chen Chuan, seeing his intense gaze, turned the gun over and handed it to him grip-first. Sun Rao carefully took it, examining it closely as if it were a work of art. He then checked the serial number below the grip.
"Every Thunderbolt from Dragon Roar Company has a serial number. It's said that only three thousand of these guns were produced domestically, and this one's serial number is 3552, making it one of the earlier models. Where did you get this, Junior Chen?"
"It was a gift from a senior," Chen Chuan replied.
"Then that senior is no ordinary person," Sun Rao said. "Not only is this gun powerful, but it's also highly valuable. I'd advise you to keep it at home and not bring it out."
"Chen Chuan spoke, "A gun is meant to be used. When that senior gave it to me, it was for dealing with enemies."
Sun Rao looked on with envy, sighing softly. He reluctantly returned the gun and added, "Just be careful with it, and remember to maintain it properly after each use."
Chen Chuan put the gun away and assured, "I will."
Sun Rao thought for a moment, then pulled out a gun case from under his seat. He opened it and took out a rifle, holding it up as he said, "This is the 'Toxin Arrow' produced by Venomous Python Company. I searched for a long time to find it. It shoots four-inch bullets, and even against someone like Wei Wusheng with his powerful transverse force, it could at least create a wound, if not kill him outright."
Chen Chuan took a look. Dealing with someone like Wei Wusheng, using a gun was undoubtedly the best option. Even if it didn't prove fatal, weakening his combat effectiveness was still beneficial.
However, the previous Wei Wusheng had a style of charging head-on without hesitation, showing no fear of bullets. But now, things might be different.
Sun Rao raised the rifle, took aim outside, then quickly lowered it, saying: "If he shows up, I'll give him a hard time." He glanced at Chen Chuan and added, "Don't worry, my marksmanship is excellent, and I'll take medication to keep up with him whenever he appears."
Chen Chuan nodded, "If he shows up, I'll create an opportunity for the senior."
Sun Rao continued, "Others might consider it a joke to suggest restraining Wei Wusheng, but I'm willing to trust you, Chen. I've heard you're the most likely among us trainees to reach the Third Limit."
"The 1619 book version is error-free!"
"You don't know, but when An Cheng heard about this, he was determined to surpass you. But this is about innate talent; it's not something one can just surpass. Accepting reality early on might make things easier."
Half an hour into their conversation, the armed patrol vehicle arrived in Yinglu District, and the towering Ferris wheel came into view.
Sun Rao spoke up, "The Ferris Wheel Company is a backer of the Swordfish Gang. They're a target the bureau is keeping an eye on, but in terms of regional stability, they're temporarily on our side. In necessary situations, they'll cooperate with us. Let's first patrol some key locations."
The vehicle patrolled along the main roads of Yinglu District, making its presence known. This was enough to signal that the Processing Bureau was keeping a close watch on the area.
If no special incidents occurred, their task was complete.
"That place..."
As they passed a street corner, Sun Rao pointed at a building, "That's Coach Zhe Rong's martial arts academy. She usually spends the whole day there."
Chen Chuan observed the building, its walls displaying the prominent characters 'Tuo Li' with occasional sounds of fierce shouts. Numerous security personnel patrolled the area, and there was a steady flow of people. This area was part of the bustling downtown, not far from the residence where Teacher Wu secretly resided.
Sun Rao said, "Let's stroll around here for a while. Later in the afternoon, we'll check out the Swordfish Gang's stronghold, led by Tong Daguang. If nothing unusual happens, our patrol duty for today will be complete.
Let's wait and see how things go at the bureau. If it goes smoothly, we'll be relieved in three days at most. But if it doesn't, we might have to be on duty here every day for the foreseeable future."
The patrol vehicle slowed down after circling the area and stopped at the roadside, allowing the driver and assistant to get out and buy drinks from a nearby vendor.
Chen Chuan remained in the vehicle, positioned to observe the academy's entrance.
The academy seemed to be doing well, with many vehicles parked outside and people coming and going. After a while, a commotion erupted at the entrance, and a tall figure emerged—Coach Zhe Rong, followed by her students dressed in training uniforms.
Zhe Rong led her students out, and they all boarded their vehicles, leaving the parking lot one by one.
Sun Rao cursed, "They're always causing trouble. Let's follow them!" The driver and assistant hurried back to the vehicle, and the patrol vehicle trailed behind.
Chen Chuan asked, "Where are they going?"
Sun Rao replied, "They teach combat, and even if they've caught Wei Wusheng's attention, they maintain an unintimidated front. So, they've been continuously organizing exchanges with other academies."
He scoffed, "They might think Wei Wusheng won't dare show up in crowded places, but it actually makes it easier for him to strike."
Chen Chuan agreed, especially considering Wei Wusheng's recent shift to more discreet actions. These academy exchanges would attract a large audience, providing him with opportunities.
However, just as their vehicle began to follow, both their boundary tokens simultaneously received a constant message from the bureau.
