Chapter 322: Invading Brain Cells (Twenty-Two)
Chapter 322: Invading Brain Cells (Twenty-Two)
After downing this cup of coffee, Feng Bu Jue discovered that his physical stamina had significantly recovered. It seems that certain "Foods" within the scenario possess hidden restoration functions.
"So... the snacks sold in the mall aren't purely for satisfying players' cravings or showing off", Feng Bu Jue muttered while checking the game menu's status display. "But the item descriptions for snacks are all blank. To determine which non-quantifiable attributes each food contains, we'll have to test them ourselves in the scenario..."
As he spoke, he pulled out a pack of Beef Jerky from his pocket. He'd purchased this along with various tools at the convenience store near the Testing Building. While tallying his items in the Bathroom, he hadn't even counted it.
Back then, buying snacks was just a ruse to appear clueless. Feng Bu Jue's hardcore player nature hadn't been revealed yet, so he didn't want his teammates to know he'd bought practical tools. He'd purchased the snacks as a cover.
Perhaps due to some rule within the scenario, even after the waterfall baptism, none of the items not placed in the satchel were lost. When Feng Bu Jue emerged from the bathtub, everything remained in his coat pockets.
"Could the Doomed status cause me to choke on snacks?" Feng Bu Jue thought after tearing open the package, though he shrugged it off and popped the Beef Jerky into his mouth.
Chewing thoughtfully, he pondered the contents of pages 599-602: "This is my memory space. Aside from the puzzles system-added, everything here should be simulated from my memories. That means... the words in this book, including the astronomy content I just reviewed, were already in my mind..."
His gaze shifted to the bookshelf. "My memory is decent—I retain impressions of what I've seen. In this space, even subconscious information should be reconstructable..."
By now, Feng Bu Jue had devoured most of the Beef Jerky. Glancing at the game menu, he confirmed his vitality value had risen by 5%. Though modest, this exceeded natural regeneration. Combined with this regrouping period, his stamina had reached 42%—no longer critical.
Seeing this, he tilted his head back and gulped down the remaining Beef Jerky. Then he stood and walked to the kitchen, tossing the packaging into the trash can before washing his hands and drying them with a towel.
Returning to the bookshelf, he selected a rarely-read botany book. "Hmm... as expected." Flipping to the latter half, the text appeared blurry and indistinct. The front pages and table of contents were clear, but once he reached the main chapters, most sections were fragmented and hazy.
"Completely forgotten information or things I've never seen can't be reproduced", Feng Bu Jue said, closing the book and turning to The Complete Sherlock Holmes Cases on the coffee table. "I remember Sherlock Holmes' details vividly, so the entire book was reconstructed." He murmured, "Since this is all knowledge I already possessed, the game prompt telling me to check pages 599-602 probably wasn't about the book's content..."
Returning to the sofa, he reopened the thick volume. "When searching the house, I treated it as an unfamiliar environment to make progress. Now, I shouldn't view this detective novel as something I've read before, but rather as pure game clue."
Changing his approach, Feng Bu Jue lifted the book and isolated pages 599-600. Shining the flashlight's artificial light on them, he noted, "Hmm... the text doesn't change under translucent light." He tried viewing the pages upside-down and sideways, but found nothing unusual.
"Submerging in water or burning are irreversible tests", he muttered. "The paper isn't thick enough for lamination."
When puzzles hit dead ends, stepping back to reassess was wise. Feng Bu Jue listed unused scenario items: "The Testing Building's Space gave me a folding knife, lighter, Nokia, and... Match. Haven't used any yet."
He examined the Match. "Combining the Nokia and knife (using cell phone lithium batteries) could start a fire... but superficially, the lighter and Match serve redundant functions."
He flicked the lighter. A flame erupted. "Still works." Expected—after drying in the Bathroom, the satchel-protected item functioned normally.
"Fire-making methods abound here—gas stove, wires, even chemical reactions using fridge ingredients", Feng Bu Jue mused. "The lighter's lost its functional uniqueness. But the Match..." His gaze lingered. "Besides fire, could it relate to 'Match puzzles'—like rearranging one Matchstick to balance an equation?"
"Hmm... seems unrelated", he thought, then paused. "Wait... this is the Match from the 'Little Match Girl' fairy tale. Could it..."
In that well-known story, each Match the girl lit revealed beautiful visions through her surroundings...
A new hypothesis formed. Feng Bu Jue immediately turned off the living room lights, returned to the sofa, and opened page 600. Taking a deep breath, he struck the Match against the coffee table's rough edge, igniting the story item.
Scratch—
As the flame flared, the open page shimmered with a three-dimensional scene. Like an audience member experiencing an Immerseive Experience, Feng Bu Jue heard thunderous waterfall roars in his ears...
