Chapter 321: Don't Waste Food, You Little Brat!
Chapter 321: Don’t Waste Food, You Little Brat!
“Forget it, it doesn’t matter. I saw a woman come in here earlier—she’s here, isn’t she?”
Kuro didn’t actually see the woman, but his Observation Haki was practically the same as seeing.
At these words, the three children immediately tensed. They exchanged glances, then nodded firmly, as if steeling themselves for a decision.
“I don’t mean any harm! I’m not here because she’s pretty—I just…”
“Get out!”
The boy gripping a branch charged at Kuro, swinging it wildly. “You’re here for Ju Geng, aren’t you?! We won’t let you take her!”
Behind him, the young girl yanked her slingshot back and fired a stone bullet.
“Who?”
Kuro flicked his finger, sending the flying stone ricocheting straight into the swinging branch.
The boy’s arm jolted from the impact, nearly dropping the branch. The force rippled through his body, making him stumble backward and fall flat on the ground.
“You said… Ju Geng?” Kuro asked, startled.
He paused. That name triggered a memory from his past life.
You know what? Now that I think about it, it actually does sound familiar. Both have big bows…
Could it be?
“Crap, we gave away her name!”
The boy instinctively covered his mouth, then turned to the other boy holding broken stone fragments. “Quick! Go tell Ju Geng—Insect Country sent someone for her!”
The boy nodded and bolted toward the village. Whether from panic or clumsiness, he didn’t notice the obvious rope stretched between the trees. His foot caught it, and with a startled cry, he face-planted. The rope snapped loose.
Whoosh!
The trap above—a net packed with heavy logs and stone fragments—sprang loose, plummeting downward.
“Xiao Lin!!”
The branch-wielding boy’s eyes bulged. Still sitting on the ground, he scrambled forward, rolling and crawling toward his friend.
The girl with the slingshot dropped her weapon and sprinted over as well.
The trapped boy raised his head, hands over his face, eyes tightly shut.
“Idiot. If you keep going like this, all three of you will get crushed, Lida,” Kuro remarked coolly.
Swoosh!
At the last moment before the trap struck, a white blur shot into the air.
Boom!
The trap exploded apart, logs and stones scattering. The net drifted down, landing gently before the trio.
Before their eyes, a white-haired girl about their age landed in front of them. Her snow-white hair danced with the motion, her hooded cloak billowing. The bold characters for “Justice” on her back stood out sharply.
“You okay, brats?” Lida asked, turning her head.
“So cool…” the girl whispered, eyes sparkling.
The two boys glanced at Lida’s face, then quickly lowered their heads, cheeks reddening.
“We’re fine… thank you for saving us.” After a pause, the boy muttered. Then he suddenly snapped back, “Wait! Even if you saved us, we won’t back down! We won’t let you take Ju—”
“Grrrrr—”
His stomach growled loudly, cutting him off. Lida tilted her head, fixing him with a sharp stare.
His face burned even redder as he stammered, “Ju… Ju Geng’s…”
Under Lida’s gaze, the boy felt a deep humiliation. He was sure this girl their age looked down on them.
“Unforgivable! Don’t look down on us!” Teeth clenched, he clenched his fist and lunged forward.
“Hmm.”
Suddenly, a warm, inviting aroma wafted under his nose.
The boy blinked as Lida stretched her hand toward him. In her palm sat a soft, fluffy piece of bread.
“Being hungry’s no fun. Want a bite?” she asked gently.
He sniffed, swallowing hard. “Is… is this bread?”
“Eh? Never had any?” Lida asked, puzzled.
“Just… never seen bread this color before,” he replied longingly.
His fingers twitched, but then he remembered something. With a slap, he struck Lida’s hand. The bread flew off, landing in the dirt.
“I won’t betray Ju Geng for just a bit of stupid food!” he shouted.
Kuro’s face turned into an expression of weary disapproval, like an old man shaking his head on the subway. He turned away, muttering, “I can’t watch this.”
“Hey!” Lida snapped.
“Yeah?!” the boy shot back defiantly.
Then he froze.
Lida’s figure shimmered, shifting into an imposing maiden form. Her white hair swirled without wind, her knuckles cracking ominously.
“Don’t waste food, you little brat!”
Wham!
She punched him straight on the head. “Pick it up and Eat it, you wasteful bastard!”
“Owww! She evolved, Monster!!”
Stars spinning in his eyes, the boy clutched the lump growing on his skull, tears spilling.
The other two kids shuddered, staring at the transformed Lida. “So scary…”
“I’ll eat it! I’ll eat it!”
Still sniffling, the boy stumbled over, grabbed the dirtied bread, and stared at it.
As he lifted it, he stilled. “So soft…”
He’d eaten bread before—stiff, gritty black loaves with wood chips, hard enough to use as weapons. But this soft? He’d never even seen it.
Gazing at it, he bit down.
The aroma erupted into a tender, melt-in-your-mouth flavor. His eyes widened as he chewed furiously, stunned.
“So good!”
“Tastes good, huh?” Lida grinned.
“It’s amazing!”
He went for another bite, then paused, turning to his friends. “Oi, Xiao Lin, Hui Na—try it! It’s seriously delicious!”
The two swallowed hard, stepping forward eagerly. “Can we?”
Su Zhan examined the half-eaten bread, dividing a third of it with his finger. “One bite only.” He handed them the portion, keeping the remaining two-thirds. “The rest is for Ju Geng.”
The piece was barely palm-sized. One bite meant just a taste.
“You call that eating when you’re starving?!” Lida’s temple twitched. She yanked her satchel open, dumping all its contents onto the ground. Then, like a thief, she slyly tucked two Devil Fruits into her bag. “Here! It’s all yours!”
