Chapter 320: The Messenger's Side Job
Chapter 320: The Messenger's Side Job
Elaine's carriage disappeared down the street.
Lindsey watched her leave and prepared to return to the shop.
Before receiving the next payment, his life would undoubtedly return to his daily routine, continuing to run the store.
In his free time, he would fish, and study the ancient texts he had obtained.
It was a peaceful life after the adventure.
Grrr...
Lindsey closed the door halfway, but suddenly, a strange sound echoed from the side.
He turned to look.
It was the child he had asked to deliver a message to Elaine.
Despite his young age, he was thoughtful.
Not only did he deliver the message to Elaine, but after ensuring that the merchant girl was heading his way, he specifically returned to the street.
After all, it was a communication between Awakened individuals.
If something happened here, he could continue to earn some living expenses.
But the result was—after standing here for half a day, his stomach couldn't take it anymore and started to grumble.
"..."
Lindsey's gaze lowered.
As he watched the child about to leave, he directly called out to him:
"Wait! Elaine and I have some food left. Can you help me finish it?"
The child's heart fluttered. He rubbed his feet on the stone steps beside him and cautiously followed Lindsey inside.
Lindsey served him Spicy Rainbow Fish Pot, which might attract trouble.
So, Lindsey only offered him some simple food.
But even so, this treatment was enough to move a child.
So, he returned the favor, and before leaving, he specifically asked Lindsey a question:
"Mr. Lindsey, I also heard your farewell with Miss Elaine at the door. Are you planning to seek some information?"
Lindsey curiously asked:
"Do you have a way to get that information?"
The boy nodded vigorously:
"I know a place."
"There's a Messenger Hall on Red Apricot Road in the south of the city. If you find the right person and give them money, you can get some information."
As soon as he finished speaking, the child turned and ran off.
He held an uneaten bread in his arms, perhaps for his companion, or perhaps as a backup ration for himself.
"..."
Lindsey watched the child leave.
He returned to the shop, found the 'Closed' sign, and hung it up before heading towards Red Apricot Road, as the child had suggested.
The Messenger Hall functioned similarly to a post office, but its services were even more diverse.
Beside the main building constructed of bricks and wood, there was a massive tent-like structure. Inside, one could occasionally hear various animal sounds, like a circus in training.
The main city of the Messengers was Starpoint City.
But they weren't the only protagonists; Mediators and Beastmasters were also essential components. The beasts here came from the latter group.
Lindsey entered the Messenger Hall.
In this frontier expansion area, the delivery business was always bustling.
People lined up at the counter, communicating with the messengers, sending their letters or items. With each transaction, faint sounds of mechanical tools echoed from behind the counter, presumably related to the messengers' work.
In a place like this, there were no waiters to attend to Lindsey.
He stood in the hall, his sharp gaze scanning the surroundings.
And—
He didn't notice anything unusual! Then, Lindsey switched his Skill Module to Puzzle Solver.
The objects in his field of view immediately displayed their features.
Some people's necklaces glowed; some people's clothes had mysterious marks; and some people's letters in their hands appeared out of place.
From this perspective, Lindsey noticed a special person.
He was a young man, a member of the messengers, sitting in front of a pile of letters.
But none of the letters in front of him glowed with special clues. Lindsey waited for a few minutes, and the man seemed to be working, but the letters in front of him remained almost untouched.
Occasionally, a co-worker would whisper a few words in the man's ear.
"This is the one."
Lindsey saw through the situation and walked forward.
The messenger also noticed Lindsey in front of him, squinting for a few seconds before recognition dawned on him:
"You must be... Mr. Lindsey?"
Lindsey nodded.
The messenger smiled and stood up to shake Lindsey's hand:
"I know you. Recently, we had a colleague deliver a package to you. Is there an issue with that delivery?"
Lindsey shook his head:
"No, I have a personal matter I'd like to seek help with."
The messenger was adept at his job:
"Are you sending something too?"
Lindsey moved closer and lowered his voice:
"I want to gather some information from you."
"..."
The messenger fell silent for a moment, his smile unchanged.
He then pushed back the chair behind the desk and gestured for Lindsey to follow him towards the back of the messenger hall.
"For interdimensional deliveries, we need to fill out some special forms. Please come with me."
The two of them walked through the long corridor behind the messenger hall.
They entered a room that resembled a reception area, and the messenger poured Lindsey a glass of water before speaking:
"Mr. Lindsey, what information are you looking for?"
Lindsey paused for a moment before speaking:
"I'm looking for news about a girl."
"Her name is Hong, and her hair is half black and half white. Her eyes are as red as flames. During a previous battle with the enemy, she was accidentally teleported by a random array to an unknown world..."
The messenger listened quietly to Lindsey's story.
During this time, he jotted down the information on a Post-it note.
However, after Lindsey finished describing Hong's appearance and personality, the messenger responded with a hint of regret:
"To find someone in the entire universe, this information is not sufficient."
"..."
Lindsey thought carefully for a moment before adding the most precise detail:
"Hong is at least a Seventh Stage Awakener, and by now... it wouldn't be surprising if she's reached the Eighth Stage."
"..."
"Pfft!"
"Cough! Cough! Cough!"
The messenger was taken aback by Lindsey's response.
He struggled to regain his composure, glanced at the Post-it note in his hand, crumpled it into a ball, and swallowed it.
When the messenger looked up again, his expression towards Lindsey became subtle and cautious:
"Such... people are not easy to find."
Lindsey replied calmly:
"I just want to know which world she's in now."
"By the way, how much is the deposit for this request?"
The messenger replied with a troubled face:
"It's hard to put a price on this kind of work."
"If we get any information, we can discuss the fee later."
"Please wait here for a moment."
As he spoke, the messenger left the room and returned to Lindsey a few minutes later.
He took out a metal plaque with special symbols engraved on it, likely a secret code or password.
Lindsey examined it.
This was the identification plaque that messengers used to verify client information.
Even if he were not in this world in the future, this plaque would prove his identity as a client.
Lindsey confirmed:
"So, by presenting this plaque at any messenger hall, I can confirm information with the local staff?"
The messenger nodded:
"Yes, if we can find this Miss Hong."
At this point, Lindsey had intended to change the subject and inquire about warrior-related news.
However, the messenger took the initiative to propose a deal:
"By the way, I might have another piece of information to sell to you."
This time, the messenger offered a price:
"If you're willing, I can sell you this information for five rough gold coins—it's related to the Lookout City you previously visited."
Lindsey promptly took out five gold coins:
"Please tell me."
The messenger accepted the coins and began his story:
"According to our information, after you and Miss Elaine left, a conflict arose in Lookout City. The merchant, Kuai Te, was publicly defeated by the law enforcement knight, Hans Kes, and is currently being escorted under the supervision of the Life Academy's higher-ups."
"Unless something unexpected happens, they should reach Nine Bays City in two days."
