Chapter 320: Message of Death
"Continuous Spell, 'Message of Death E', activate from my deck!"
A second translucent ghost appeared on Death's field. With this, there were now two ghosts on his field, holding the letters "D" and "E".
"The effect of the Spirit Plate lets me activate one 'Message of Death' card from my hand or deck during each of your End Phases." Death explained with a chilling smile, "And when the five cards, D, E, A, T, and H, including the Spirit Plate, are all on my field..."
He left the sentence hanging, but Judai already understood the gravity of the situation and furrowed his brows.
"I will lose."
The effect of the Spirit Plate was similar to the Dark Magician, "Exodia". Just as having all five pieces of Exodia in your hand resulted in an automatic victory, having these five letters that spelled out "death" on the field would also grant a rules victory in a duel, akin to defeat.
"Hehe, indeed. Now I have two Messages of Death." Death laughed, "Struggle as much as you want in these few turns you have left."
"My turn, draw!"
Death drew a card and narrowed his eyes at Judai's back row.
"Just in case, let's get rid of that face-down card as well. I activate the Quick-Play Spell Card, 'Dust Tornado' to destroy any Magic or Trap Card on the field!"
A black cyclone swept up Judai's face-down card. The Trap Card spun in the storm before being struck by a bolt of lightning from the vortex's center and shattered into pieces.
"That Trap Card was 'Fake Mark'. When it's destroyed, I get to draw a card. And since it was destroyed by your Spell Card, I draw two cards instead of one." Judai explained with a smirk.
"What?!" Death exclaimed, furrowing his brows.
"Since my 'Fake Mark' was destroyed by your 'Dust Tornado', I draw two cards." Judai drew the cards with a confident smile.
"Tch, petty tricks." Death remarked, "But they won't change the fact that you're inching closer to your demise."
He drew two more cards from his deck.
"I'll set two more cards and end my turn."
Judai knew that what Death said was true. With each passing turn, the Spirit Plate was like a ticking time bomb, bringing him closer to defeat—which was as good as death in this duel.
However, the Super Gravity Net prevented Level 4 or higher monsters from attacking, and "Cotton Cloud" was a pesky defensive monster with the ability to avoid destruction in battle.
He needed to find a way to break through Death's defenses quickly.
"My turn, draw!"
Judai played a Magic Card from his hand.
"I activate the Magic Card, 'Shield Crush'! It lets me destroy a face-up Defense Position monster on the field!"
"Hmm, so you've already found a way to get past Cotton Cloud, have you?" Death hummed.
"Indeed. Cotton Cloud can't be destroyed in battle, but it's vulnerable to card effects. So, I destroy 'Cotton Cloud'!" Judai declared.
"Hehe, do you really think it'll be that easy? I activate my Trap Card, 'Bomb Defense'!"
Death's declaration was accompanied by countless bomb orbs that appeared on his field, forming a defensive wall that protected "Cotton Cloud".
"Bomb Defense can be activated when a card that includes the effect of destroying one of my monsters is activated. Negate the activation, destroy that card, and inflict 500 points of damage to your Life Points!" Death explained.
The magic beam from Shield Crush hit the bomb wall, setting off a chain reaction.
"Ah, Shield Crush didn't work either," Judai remarked.
Death cackled, "Struggle as you may, your resistance is futile. No matter what you do, you can't stop the inevitable outcome."
"Hey, don't count me out yet," Judai countered. "The real thrill of a duel is that you never know the outcome until the very last moment."
Judai didn't seem fazed by the pressure and continued, "As I usually do, I summon 'Elemental Hero Clayman' in attack mode."

He drew another card from his deck and inserted it into his Duel Disk.
"I activate the Equip Spell Card, 'Lightning Gun,' and equip it to 'Elemental Hero Electrum!' "
A flash of lightning appeared, and a black, tech-looking gun forged from electricity materialized in Electrum's hand. Electrum's ability activated, and dancing currents of electricity flowed along his arm, charging the Lightning Gun in his hand.
"Electrum, equipped with the Lightning Gun, can change the battle position of any monster on the field. This effect can be used up to three times."
Judai pointed at Death's Cotton Cloud.
"I change the defense position of Cotton Cloud to attack mode!"
Electrum pulled the trigger, and a bolt of electricity shot out. Cotton Cloud was hit and trembled, causing the card underneath it to switch from defense to attack mode. Its round body slowly stood up.
[Cotton Cloud: DEF 500 → ATK 300]
Death: "Whoa, you've got some tricks up your sleeve."
"Indeed," Judai replied. "Although I can't destroy it in battle, I can still inflict damage with Cotton Cloud in attack mode!"
Death: "But even Cotton Cloud is affected by the effect of 'Orichalcos Barrier,' increasing its attack by 500 points."

"But even so, it's still only 800 ATK!" Judai exclaimed.
With a wave of his hand, he continued, "Elemental Hero Wildman is unaffected by trap effects, so it can ignore the Super Gravity Net. Go, Wildman! Attack Cotton Cloud!"
Death waved his hand and said, "Then I activate the trap card 'Desert Light.' All monsters on my opponent's field become defense position!"
The trap card was activated, and Cotton Cloud, which had just stood up, sat back down and returned to its defensive stance.

"What a pity," Death mocked. "It looks like your efforts were all for nothing."
"That's not necessarily true," Judai said with a smirk.
With a grand gesture, he waved his hand, and another magic card appeared in his backrow.
"I activate the Quick-Play Spell Card, 'Instant Fusion!' Using the monsters on my field, I perform a Fusion Summon!"
"Oh?" Death asked, intrigued. "A quick fusion, huh?"
"I fuse 'Elemental Hero Electrum' and 'Elemental Hero Clayman' from my field!" Judai declared.
He raised his arm, and the two Elemental Heroes on the field transformed into a golden flash of electricity and a vortex of earth, respectively. They swirled into the fusion vortex, merging and erupting into a dazzling golden light.
"A hero who wields the power of electricity and a stalwart defender of the earth, combine your strengths to invoke a hero endowed with thunderous might! Fusion Summon!"
Judai clenched his fist and shouted, "Elemental Hero Thunder Giant!"
