Chapter 32: Suisui's Double Standards
Chapter 32: Suisui's Double Standards
Suisui wasn't hungry, as she had eaten well in the evening.
When Doctor Li asked, Suisui shook her head obediently and said, "I'm not hungry, Grandpa Li."
The butler of the Sun mansion overheard and smiled, "The broth for the noodles was made with chicken soup this morning. It's warm and delicious. If the young miss doesn't feel like eating noodles, drinking some soup to warm up would be good."
Doctor Li thought this arrangement was fine. If Suisui didn't eat while the others did, what if the little girl started feeling unwell?
He turned to Suisui and asked, "Then how about we drink some soup to warm up before going to sleep?"
Suisui nodded obediently.
Seeing the adorable child, Doctor Li couldn't help but ruffle Suisui's hair affectionately.
It felt smooth and soft to the touch.
Remembering Suisui's weak spleen and stomach, Doctor Li turned to the butler and added some instructions, "Please skim the fat off the chicken soup. This child has a weak constitution, so we shouldn't overdo it with rich foods. And go easy on the salt as well."
...
As the conversation went on, Doctor Li's habit of giving instructions, honed by his profession, kicked in.
The butler listened patiently and agreed to all his requests.
The noodles were served soon after. Everyone else had chicken soup with cabbage noodles, while Suisui had a bowl of hot chicken soup. After the fat was skimmed off, it didn't seem greasy at all and instead tasted even more delicious.
Suisui took a sip and the savory flavor made her squint her eyes and curl up her legs in delight.
She turned to share this delightful discovery with her brother, wanting to tell him how fresh the soup was.
However, she found Feng Xuanrui devouring his noodles.
He hadn't eaten properly in the evening, and after all the commotion and the fight, he was famished.
So, when the noodles arrived, he dug in heartily.
Sun Ronglin had eaten well in the evening and wasn't particularly hungry now.
But seeing Feng Xuanrui eat with such gusto, his competitive spirit was stirred, and he, too, began eating with large mouthfuls.
The Qiu brothers, on the other hand, were more moderate. Knowing their appetite, they shared a bowl of noodles between the two of them.
Noticing Suisui looking their way, Qiu Ping smiled and asked, "What is it, little sister? Do you want some noodles? I haven't touched this bowl yet, let me share some with you."
As he spoke, Qiu Ping prepared to use his chopsticks to pick some noodles from his bowl for Suisui.
Hearing the movement, Feng Xuanrui lifted his head from his bowl and asked, "Does Suisui want noodles? We can just ask the kitchen to bring some more."
Suisui shook her head, not wanting any noodles, "No need, I'll just have the soup. I don't want noodles."
After refusing, she didn't forget to express her gratitude, "Thank you, Brother Qiu Ping."
Suisui was quick-witted, and despite spending only a short while with them, she had already remembered Qiu Ping's name.
After thanking Qiu Ping, Suisui turned back to Feng Xuanrui, "Brother, go ahead and eat. Otherwise, the noodles will get cold."
Feng Xuanrui was still concerned and asked again, "Are you sure you don't want noodles?"
Worried that his sister might be timid and afraid to eat, he added, "You're my sister now. You can eat whatever you like, don't be afraid!"
Suisui shook her head again, "I'm really not hungry, brother."
Hearing Suisui's insistence, Feng Xuanrui finally felt relieved and turned back to continue eating.
Indeed, the chef of the Sun mansion was quite skilled.
The food was much better than what they had at the post house!
Feng Xuanrui and Sun Ronglin engaged in a friendly eating competition, each finishing a small bowl of noodles.
Doctor Li kept a close eye on them, controlling their portions to prevent another bout of food accumulation and fever.
Suisui's previous condition had scared him enough.
So, the children were well-fed but not stuffed.
After the meal, Doctor Li even prepared a digestive soup for them.
Seeing that each of them had drunk about half a bowl, he finally urged them to go to bed.
Suns Ronglin didn't want to sleep at all, now that he finally had a sister to play with. This was one of his usual tricks.
Usually, at the mansion, all he had to do was lie on the ground and throw a tantrum, and whether it was his grandmother or his mother, they would give in to his wishes!
Sun Fu, the magistrate, was already so ashamed that he couldn't show his face. But how could he let his wife and daughter-in-law continue spoiling Sun Ronglin like this?
As soon as Sun Ronglin started acting up, the Qiu brothers followed suit and threw their own little tantrums.
Doctor Liu brought out his best persuasive skills, but even after half a day's worth of coaxing, the children were still unwilling to sleep.
Di Jiao and Di Yu had barely slept these past few days, and their eyes were already drooping with exhaustion. But in the distance, Sun Ronglin's voice could still be heard, shouting, "I'm almost there! I really am a genius, I'm so close!"
Feng Xuanrui scoffed in response, "No way! You're so far off, and with the Nine Linked Rings, you're not even close. You're just deluding yourself!"
......
The two boys began another round of competing to solve the Nine Linked Rings, with the Qiu brothers cheering them on from the sidelines.
Suisui, always the affectionate one, stayed by Feng Xuanrui's side, chiming in with praises from time to time.
"You're so amazing, big brother!"
"This big brother is so clever too!"
"You're the best, big brother!"
Feng Xuanrui was already floating on cloud nine with all the praise.
But when it came to solving the Nine Linked Rings, he was out of his depth. He had never managed to solve it back at the mansion either! How could he suddenly find the solution now?
No matter how much encouragement Suisui gave him, it wasn't going to help with his lack of skill.
However, Suisui's supportive words made Feng Xuanrui proud and arrogant. On the other hand, it made Sun Ronglin turn green with envy.
He wanted to throw the unsolved Nine Linked Rings on the ground, but he was afraid it would scare his sister. In the end, he pouted and sat there, looking wronged. "Am I not amazing too, little sister?"
Hearing him ask that, Suisui nodded vigorously. "Brother Ronglin is very amazing too!"
Hearing Suisui call him that, Sun Ronglin's mood improved, and he proudly thought to himself: Suisui calls me 'Brother Ronglin', but she only calls them 'big brother'!
So, she's my little sister, and no one can take her away!
Sun Ronglin was a year older than Feng Xuanrui, but he hadn't developed much emotional intelligence. He didn't pick up on Suisui's double standards at all.
Hearing Suisui praise him, Sun Ronglin's mood brightened, and he picked up the Nine Linked Rings again, thinking to himself: If little sister says I'm amazing, then I must be capable of solving this, right?
But no matter how hard he tried, he still couldn't do it. Eventually, everyone's eyes were heavy with sleepiness, and no one had managed to solve the puzzle.
At this point, Doctor Liu stepped in and persuaded them to call it a night.
The young mistress of the Sun mansion even sent someone to ask if Suisui needed any help.
Doctor Liu didn't make the decision himself, but instead asked Suisui, "Would you like to sleep with Grandpa Liu, or with the gentle auntie?"
A gentle auntie? That sounded quite enticing.
But the young mistress of the Sun mansion was a stranger to Suisui, so no matter how tempting it sounded, she didn't want to go.
She shyly looked up at Doctor Liu and asked cautiously, "... Can I sleep with big brother?"
Out of everyone here, she felt closest to her brother. So, she only wanted to be with him.
Feng Xuanrui was so sleepy that his eyes were barely open, but upon hearing Suisui's voice, he eagerly turned his head and exclaimed, "Yes, yes, I'll sleep with little sister!"
