Chapter 317: "Timely Rain" Kuro
Chapter 317: "Timely Rain" Kuro
Kuro glanced at him, then at the group of black-clad agents behind.
Just lost a World Government official earlier, and now a CP officer shows up?
So they came to stake him out?
"When did CP start drafting Navy officers?" Kuro asked casually.
"Lucius Kro", the agent replied coldly, "This concerns the Revolutionary Army. Regardless of affiliation, the World Government's interests take priority. I trust you understand."
The CP agent folded his arms. "I sent staff to find you earlier. Didn’t you receive the message? Regardless, we’re here to arrest the Revolutionary Army first."
"Oh? Then you’ve got the wrong guy. I’m Klah. Kuro’s over there."
Kuro pointed at Klah. "Hey, Kuro! The World Government wants you to lead the Revolutionary Army arrest. Hop to it!"
Klah: "...”
"Don’t play games, Lucius Kro", the CP agent snapped. "We know who you are. Cooperate."
Kuro slowly removed his cigar, flicking ash onto the ground. "You know me? And you still talk to me like this? Which department assigned you?"
"We’re CP3. I’m the field commander. Vice Admiral rank. Commanding a mere Commander should hardly be an issue."
CP3’s leader glared. "Or do you intend to defy the World Government’s orders?"
Kuro rolled his eyes. "Don’t throw accusations around. I’ll lodge a formal complaint with the World Government myself. I don’t recognize your authority—our systems don’t overlap. Until my superiors issue orders, you’ve no right to command me. Take your demands to Admiral Lucius Kro himself if you’ve got the guts. Now step aside."
Shoving past the agent, Kuro strode toward the warship. "Someone call the Luo Family! Let’s see if they still value my friendship. If not, I’m retiring home!"
"Wait—!"
The agent’s hand shot out to grab Kuro’s shoulder, but a steel grip suddenly clamped his wrist. Klah materialized beside him, palm locked on his arm, eyes sharp. "Touching a Navy Commander? Bold move."
"Are you defying the World Government?!" the agent roared, trembling with fury.
"Cut the crap", Kuro muttered. "How do I know you’re not a fraud? What if you forged credentials to frame me? Get me clashing with real World Government intel? Try to get me expelled from the Navy?"
His eyes lit up. "Wait! That’s it!"
"What if you’re the Revolutionary Army? Trying to lure me into a trap? Make me fight allies, lose my Navy post, and force me to join your rebellion? Think of the headlines—‘Timely Rain’ Kuro! ‘Black Tempest’ Klah! Gathering ‘Leopard Captains’ and ‘Walking Heroes’ to overthrow the World Government? Dream on!"
Kuro waved him off. "No orders, no action. Bother me again, and I’ll arrest you as a rebel."
"You insufferable brat!"
The agent stormed away, spitting curses, dialing his Transponder Snail with trembling fingers.
"Booororo—!"
Kuro’s wrist-mounted Transponder Snail chirped. He silenced it instantly, feigning innocence while staring at the sky.
"Commander Lucius Kro", the agent called, "you’ve a call."
"What call? Didn’t hear a thing. Klah, prep the ship—we’re leaving."
Right. Like he’d risk his neck fighting the Revolutionary Army for zero reward.
They’d never crossed paths anyway. Let the pirates handle their squabbles. The Revolutionary Army could topple the World Government and noble families all they liked.
What did nobles matter to him? His name didn’t bear the "Holy" title anyway.
The agent gritted his teeth, shooting Kuro a venomous glare before redialing.
"Boororo—!"
This time, the snail rang unmistakably.
Kuro instinctively reached for his wrist device, only to realize the sound came from elsewhere.
Click.
The snail on the Navy communicator’s desk lit up. A familiar face flickered onto its shell—a seagull perched atop a bespectacled face with a beard like a queue.
"Kuro!!!"
Kuro recoiled, his expression twisting into a "grandpa-on-the-subway-with-a-cracked-screen" grimace.
"Hello, Kuro! Answer me!" The snail squawked. "It’s Sengoku!"
The messenger Navy officer edged forward. "Commander, it’s Fleet Admiral Sengoku."
Why’d you have to show up?!
Kuro shot the officer a glare, stretched the cord taut, and held the receiver at arm’s length. "H-hello, Sengoku-san..."
"Kuro!!!"
The snail bellowed, making the messenger jump.
"Aren’t you supposed to be in Pegasus Town? Why are you in Insect Country?! Why didn’t you answer the old man’s calls?!"
"I’m on vacation", Kuro shrugged. "Any other orders? I’m hanging up."
"The old man wanted you to clean up Pegasus Town and lie low for a while! The higher-ups’ grudges against you haven’t faded yet!"
Kuro sighed. "You know me—no troublemaker. Just call me when you’re free. Busy here!"
"Wait! CP’s with you, right? Assist them with arresting the Revolutionary Army. It’ll boost your career."
Career? Promotion? Ha!
Kuro wailed, "Sengoku-san, I’m just a Commander! Tourist here! Less than 200 men! Take on the Revolutionary Army? Terrifying! Gramps depends on me! I still have to burn incense for Shanks! What if I die? Who’ll protect those two poor souls?!"
"Don’t be absurd, Kuro!"
The snail roared, then coughed. "It’s an order from above. Just cooperate—caught or not."
Interesting.
"I’ll... try?" Kuro arched a brow.
"Try’s enough. Return to Pegasus Island immediately. No more sightseeing! The old man doesn’t want another bad word about you!"
Click.
The snail dimmed.
Kuro stared at the silent receiver, face warped in thought.
Maybe it was too late. But he’d played by the book—Navy’s duty to maintain order. No one could fault him. Probably.
