Chapter 316: Mistake, Mistake
The scene was filled with a surreal, eerie glow—the pale light of the moon and the flickering flames of the torches cast long, twisted shadows across the chamber. A deep silence hung in the air, broken only by the soft rustling of robes and the occasional creak of ancient stone. The air itself seemed thick with tension, heavy with unspoken words and hidden intentions.
Wade Gray stood at the center of it all, his expression unreadable, his posture rigid. His face, usually so composed, bore a look of strained concentration. His long, dark hair—streaked with crimson and silver—was tied back, and the faint glow of the torchlight made the red strands shimmer like molten fire. He wore a long, flowing black cloak, the hood drawn low over his forehead, and a silver "W" was etched into the collar, a symbol of his allegiance.
"Your brilliance is overwhelming," Wade said, his voice low and measured, "but you're missing the point."
He turned slightly, his eyes narrowing as he observed the others. The room was filled with familiar faces—Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, Theo Mancini, Liam Caro, and others. Their expressions ranged from suspicion to quiet unease. The air between them crackled with unspoken questions.
"I was just about to ask," Hermione said, her tone sharp, "if you truly believe that the truth is worth sacrificing everything for."
Wade exhaled slowly, his breath visible in the cold air. "Truth? Yes. But not at any cost. You think I'm reckless? That I'd throw away lives for a principle? No. I'm simply trying to protect what matters."
"Protect?" Theo murmured, his voice laced with skepticism. "You're the one who's been leading us into danger at every turn."
Wade didn’t flinch. "And yet, here we are. Still standing. Still fighting."
He reached into his cloak and pulled out a small, ornate flask. The liquid inside glowed faintly, shifting between blue and silver. He held it up, letting the light catch the surface.
"Look at this," he said. "This isn't just any potion. It's a memory serum—a way to see through lies, to uncover what’s buried beneath the surface."
Hermione stepped forward, her eyes fixed on the flask. "You’re saying we can use this to find the truth? To know who’s lying?"
Wade nodded. "But it won’t work on everyone. Only those who’ve made a choice—those who’ve truly decided what they’re willing to sacrifice."
Neville frowned. "And what if someone’s already made that choice? What if they’re already lost?"
Wade looked at him, his gaze piercing. "Then they’re not lost. They’re just... hiding. And sometimes, the truth is the only thing that can bring them back."
A beat of silence passed.
Then, quietly, Liam spoke. "You’re not just trying to find the truth. You’re trying to force us to face it."
Wade didn’t deny it. "Yes. Because if we don’t, we’ll keep making the same mistakes. Again and again."
Hermione’s eyes narrowed. "And what makes you think you’re the one to judge?"
"Because I’ve seen what happens when you don’t," Wade said. "I’ve seen the cost. And I’m not going to let that happen again."
The room fell silent once more. The torchlight flickered, casting dancing shadows on the walls. The air felt heavier than before.
Wade turned toward the far end of the chamber, where a large, ancient door stood sealed with runes. He raised the flask slightly.
"If we go through that door," he said, "we’ll find the truth. But we’ll also face what comes after. Are you ready for that?"
No one answered.
Wade took a deep breath. "Then let’s go."
He stepped forward, the flask glowing brighter in his hand. The others hesitated, then followed—Hermione first, then Neville, Theo, Liam, and the rest.
As they moved through the chamber, the air grew colder. The torches dimmed. The shadows stretched and twisted, as if alive.
And somewhere in the darkness, a voice whispered, "You’re too late."
But Wade didn’t stop.
He kept walking.
