Chapter 314: Lanchi and Xide Look Like Delinquents
Chapter 314: Lanchi and Xide Look Like Delinquents
On one side of the reception hall, a staircase spiraled upward, its pale brown stone steps winding gently. Several nobles in formal attire descended slowly, their sashes and robes swaying gently with each step.
As they progressed, the low, rhythmic footsteps and their quiet conversations echoed downwards. Though their volume was modest, in the vast space of the grand hall, every word seemed to carry a peculiar resonance.
In contrast, the sofa area in the center of the lobby was exceptionally quiet. The flickering candle flames on the golden candelabras added to the ambiance. Aside from the crackling fire in the fireplace, the trio seated on the sofa remained silent, awaiting quietly as if they were in a world separate from the nobles.
"I thought the Protoss Royal Magic Academy had eliminated malicious competition?"
Xia Ya, seated on the sofa in the lobby, directed a confused whisper to Lanchi and Xide, his voice laced with uncertainty.
During their journey, he had overheard snippets of their casual conversation, hinting at significant recent changes and a starkly different culture within the Protoss Royal Magic Academy.
"How dare you be so disrespectful in the presence of the leader of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy!"
Lord Blake Boone, Viscount of Boone City, suddenly turned as if he had sensed something amiss. His sharp gaze fell upon the three young people seated on the sofa in the center of the lobby, and he issued a stern rebuke.
"So-sorry," Xia Ya stammered, taken aback by the sudden admonishment. He lowered his head, his eyes darting nervously, unsure where to land.
He hadn't expected his quiet comment to reach the ears of the middle-aged noble, Viscount Blake Boone, as if the man had been keenly attuned to their presence in the lobby.
Among the two middle-aged viscounts, Lilith paused for a moment, her eyes resting on Xia Ya for a fleeting moment before moving on. That brief glance only served to heighten Xia Ya's discomfort.
"What do you make of this?" Xide, unfazed by the Viscount's rebuke, turned to Lanchi with a curious look in his violet eyes.
He found it intriguing that someone would exploit the time lag in information to engage in fraud in the Snowfield Province.
"What if someone impersonated the Church of the Dominion?" Lanchi, his eyes fixed on Xide's violet irises, stroked Cat Boss as he often did.
Along their journey, they had openly discussed their plans, confident that no one would believe they were associated with the Church of the Dominion or High Priestess Sigrid.
However, it was true that most people wouldn't be able to expose imposters of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy. After all, even students might not be privy to the inner workings of the academy, and lower-year students rarely interacted with the senior professors. Unlike Xide, who could convey his arguments through his fists if needed.
Xia Ya, seated beside them, was utterly bewildered by their exchange, unable to make head or tail of what they were discussing.
The group from afar continued their leisurely descent, their conversation drifting downwards with them.
"Viscount Boone, these two are friends of my son-in-law. They are also students of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy and may have some insights into the situation there," Viscount Levin Kingston interjected, attempting to ease the tension and spare Xia Ya further embarrassment.
"Imposters have been infiltrating the Snowfield Province lately, and I suggest we let Professor Machy verify the identities of these young people to ensure we aren't inviting wolves into our midst!" Viscount Blake Boone countered with a cold smile, stroking his small goatee. He eyed the unexpected addition of the two individuals alongside Xia Ya with suspicion, then glanced meaningfully at Professor Machy standing nearby.
For those who dared to challenge their authority, he would rather err on the side of caution and eliminate any potential threat.
"That won't be necessary," Viscount Levin Kingston objected, his tone resolute. "We've verified their identities, and the magical seal of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy on their documents is impossible to forge."
Magic, by its very nature, was a form of information. As unique as fingerprints, each person's magic was distinct. The magical seal of the Protoss Royal Magic Academy originated from the magical imprint of Emperor Franklin, imprinted on a magical artifact when the academy was founded a century ago. Even the Great Sage Isis of the Empire would be unable to replicate it.
"I think it's necessary to conduct an inspection. It's also my duty to check on the students' academic performance and identity information."
However, Professor Machy finally spoke up.
His voice, thick with the weight of a leader's authority and sense of responsibility, filled the room.
"..."
Upon hearing this, Viscount Levin Kingston could only relax his shoulders and hold back his words.
Even if he wanted to maintain a friendly relationship with the two young people and defend them, it was only to counter Viscount Blake Boone's attitude. He couldn't interfere with Professor Machy's decision.
After all, this was an internal matter of their Protoss Royal Magic Academy.
Machy's pace remained unhurried as he descended the stairs and reached the lobby's first floor. A hint of sorrow furrowed his brow, a loneliness often seen in the strong, until he stopped not far from the trio.
"Show me your student IDs."
"Here."
Xide, unfazed, produced her ID without hesitation.
She was just an ordinary second-year student, unaware of the true situation regarding the fake principal.
Lanchi, with a faint smile, took Xide's ID and handed it over to the professor along with his own.
Machy took the IDs with indifference, glancing briefly at the information on them.
"How many credits do you have..."
Xide whispered softly to Lanchi, her voice barely audible.
"40. What about you?" Lanchi whispered back.
His own credits were given to him daily by Associate Professor Xido, from Tuesday to Friday, a total of four days.
"I have 60 left, way more than you."
Xide was a master at credit control.
Their quiet exchange caused Xia Ya's eyes to twitch, and Professor Machy's expression soon turned gloomy.
It was common knowledge that even newly enrolled preparatory students at the Protoss Royal Magic Academy could easily have hundreds of credits.
Yet, these two students had a combined total of just a hundred points, and they seemed rather proud of it. They didn't appear to be freshmen either.
If Xia Ya hadn't witnessed Xide's skills firsthand, he would have suspected them of being at the bottom of their class.
"Professor Machy, have you remembered our names, especially his?"
Xide pointed at Lanchi beside her and addressed the professor.
"I don't remember the names of underachieving students."
Professor Machy snorted coldly and tossed their IDs back, feeling that these two were mocking and wasting his time.
As his words landed, Machy turned and walked away.
Standing at a distance, Viscount Blake Boone could only shake his head and chuckle at the interaction.
There was no need for further communication; they were clearly not on the same level.
In that harsh yet resource-rich educational environment of the Empire, the status of underachieving students was lower than that of dogs. Even if their identities were genuine, they posed no threat or value.
Like attracts like.
Those who would associate with a failing noble like Xia Ya were unlikely to be outstanding students. Viscount Levin Kingston had almost mistaken them for gems.
"Brother Levin, your eye for talent is deteriorating. It's worrisome who you'll find for Lady Lilith... You know, once she enrolls in the academy, useless individuals won't be able to help her. Instead, they might cling to her like parasites, impossible to shake off."
Viscount Blake Boone patted Viscount Levin Kingston on the shoulder and sighed.
It was unclear if he was mocking the destitute Xia Ya or ridiculing the two bodyguards he had picked up.
"If you truly care for Lady Lilith, consider my suggestion. My son, Dean, is also exceptional. It would be beneficial for these two promising young people to interact. Who knows, she might even catch the eye of Professor Machy."
Viscount Blake Boone continued, no longer hiding his intentions.
